What?

1 week or weekend every year there is a limited number of portals that will be available all around the world and all MU that is scored will be counted per team. The team with the most MU wins the challenge.

Reward

Badge for winning or losing the challenge.

Details

Limited number of portals

In this challenge every player (minimum level 8) gets 1 vote he/she can give to an existing portal. Only portals with a minimum of 1 vote will be available in the challenge. Other portals will disappear from the game for that week. This will give the map a completely different look and new ways of playing for different regions. Cooperation is (a portal) key!

How will the voting work?

The week before the challenge, players will be able to vote on a portal. This is only possible if they are at the location of that portal. So, if you want to include a portal that is really hard to get to, you will have to put in some effort the week before.

Multiple votes on 1 portal

If a portal gets 1 vote it will be in the challenge, but it is possible to give multiple votes to the same portal.

  • 1 vote: portal is available in the challenge
  • 4 votes: 2 extra mod slots on the portal
  • 8 votes: 4 extra mod slots on the portal

Extra votes

Level 16 players get an extra vote for reaching level 16, which gives them 2 votes.

Recursed players get an extra vote for every recurse. So, hardcore players can get extra votes depending on how hardcore they are.

What will happen at the start of the challenge?

All portals will be set to a neutral state, so all links and fields will be removed from the game.

There are exceptions. A lot of players have guardian portals/links/fields they have in their possession for a long time. If a portal/link/field is up for >300 days, it will not be set to neutral and will stay in the challenge even if it gets no votes.

The guardian badge will come back for a limited time and people who have a guardian at the beginning of the challenge will get this badge.

What do you all think? Remarks?

No no no to resetting the playfield.

Niantic originally was going to do that with the launch of Prime and they got so much blowback that they quickly reversed that position. It's less about guardians and more about control of durable/tactical/strategic portals, not all of which are accessible at all times of the year.

  • All portals will be set to a neutral state, so all links and fields will be removed from the game.

This would be the last straw for so many people.

there is a limited number of portals that will be available all around the world

So... don't bother playing Ingress because areas with very low portal density will be empty?

Overlay, not remove and then you are on to something.

From what I've heard, there are millions of portals, and tens of thousands of active players. So, painting in broad strokes, we're talking about keeping only 1 out of 100 portals.

For the folks who don't care about the "regional" or "global" game, they won't have anything to do for the duration of the event. (I doubt that they're suddenly going to discover a new interest in the "larger" game.) For the folks who do care, it's going to be a lot of teeth gnashing and meta gaming as they decide which portals to keep for fields, which to keep for blocking links, and which to keep for farms.

Neither of those scenarios sounds particularly fun to me. 😕

Even if this were somehow an "instanced" event, one that doesn't affect the game board that we've all come to love (or loathe), I think we lose something by cutting down on the portal network so drastically. You lose an element of surprise; every portal in play is a portal that someone thought was worth keeping for one reason or another.

The overall concept isn't necessarily bad for an event, but resetting the game board is big no... lots of people plan day trips around building and breaking fields (and some have done far larger efforts than that), and cancelling those efforts is a really bad idea... not to mention completely shutting low level agents out of the game when all of their AP and item sources suddenly disappear.

Instead, I would say have the voting period, have everyone plant their flags, and then say... once/day, every flagged portal is worth a point for your side in the event if said side controls the portal. You'd still get the "decide what we're fighting over for this battle" feel of it, but you'd do it without completely disrupting the rest of the game. If you want to do it by MU instead, then have a special map layer for the event that shows only -those- fields, and they block each other, but not the normal ones.

I like the base idea, but there are too many things that wouldn't work out in it.

How about this: get 1% of portals to be valid for the challenge. Make it 2 weeks instead of 1 weekend. Make badges to require at least a hack in one of the portals. Don't put different badges for winning or losing while spoofing is rampant: instead of that, make it tiered so agents can have the chance to get their effort rewarded instead of team.

  • If a portal/link/field is up for >300 days, it will not be set to neutral

    guardian hunters will love it!
