Hello, Agents -

A quick update on a few forum updates I’ve made today. They are, for now, mostly NIA/Admin only features.

Private Messaging: NIA Staff/Admins now have the ability to initiate messages with agents. Agents can reply to those messages but are unable to message others. This was enabled for situations where we need to ask for account specific information.

Signatures: Enabled for NIA Staff/Admins. I’m looking into tweaks and guidelines before enabling this further.

Promoted Content: We’ve added this module to the top of the forums to showcase content we think you’ll find interesting.

Polls: I’m testing functionality that comes with Vanilla Forums to see if it will work for some things I’d like to do. At an initial look, it doesn’t seem like it will but I’m going to keep it for now and try it out. Right now, this functionality is only available to NIA Staff/Admins and only in sections of the forums we’ve enabled it.

Dark Mode: Enabled for NIA Staff/Admins - kidding! I flipped the switch for all.

Edit: Regarding dark mode - I, too, see that some of the modules are still in light/white. I'll look into what was missed.

POLL BELOW

What do you put on your TOAST?

As Second Sunday began, agents were keen to add an increment to their Second Sunday stat. Agents in the Second Sunday Telegram chat shared with each other their experiences of Second Sunday, places visited and the missions they accomplished. Some agents were able to meet up and do missions together too. Photographs shared suggest that much cake and other food was enjoyed.

The day also began with reports of the mysterious red faction. The group reported sightings, curiosity and observations of its behaviour. What could this strange phenomenon mean?

We had 43 participants who joined in the informal Second Sunday competition, uploading stats and selfies using the bot from DhrMekmek. The ingress year 10 double ap event saw some staggering ap gain this month. We also noticed that the top three agents for XM Recharged were responsible for 47.4% of total recharge, and one agent was responsible for 93% of all MU captured in the competition.

Stats Talk

Overall: 43 Agents, 38,069,046 Total AP, 22 Level ups (including 2 recursions), 30,976,323 XM Recharged, 537 km walked, 366 unique missions completed, 1,079,899 Mind Units captured. 0.68 missions per km walked.

RES: 24 Agents 23,883,122 Total AP, 10 Level ups, 12,463,846 XM recharged, 308 km walked, 192 unique missions 1,048,899 Mind Units captured.

ENL: 19 Agents 14,185,924 Total AP, No Level up, 18,512,477 XM recharged, 229 km walked, 174 unique missions, 30,989 Mind Units captured.

The large number of unique portals visited on Second Sunday showed that many agents explored and discovered new places: RES 1,109 ENL 361 totalling 1,470 unique portal visits.

We enjoyed Second Sunday and look forward to the next one. Thank you to all the mission creators who help make this aspect of ingress so enjoyable for us.

As we count down the days until 2020, we wanted to recap the exciting things that we have been working on over the last year in Ingress and preview what’s to come.

We know that getting answers as quickly as possible is important, so we’ve expanded the in-app support experience to make it easier to get in touch with our team about more topics, allowing you to get answers without having to leave the game.

Transparency is super important to us, and while we can’t share everything, we’re working on revising our strategy for communicating known issues and are excited to show you what we’ve been working on in 2020.

Speaking of transparency, we’ve introduced the three-strike policy from Pokémon GO into Ingress and have been working on a number of improvements to how we communicate policy violations and enforcement.

The launch of Niantic Wayfarer was one of our favorite Niantic moments of the year. We worked hard to make the acceptance criteria more streamlined and comprehensive in advance of the global launch in November.

Building connections and sharing tips and strategies are super important, that’s why we introduced the Community forums for Ingress. In the 6 months since it’s been active, more than 25,000 players have joined us!

Finally, we appreciate our community of players so much and we’re delighted to be here to support you. We’re excited to continue to provide you with support in 2020 and beyond!

The current bug report section is a mess with so many duplicated, outdated threads or issues that don't have an updated tag. It works in its own way, so I'm not asking for it to be replaced.

My suggestion is to add a public bug tracker similar to this one, so players can see at one glance (at least on pc) the current issues acknowledged by the Ingress team (or the most spread or important ones), what is being worked on, what is recently fixed, what the new fixes will be and so on.

What I also like is that they also include workarounds to help players until they fix the issue, something that here is done by comments from other agents in long bug threads. Many people don't have access to the workarounds info because of lack of time to read all the forum or language barriers to do so, while translating a few lines will be easier for them (although we have good info channels in Telegram that usually inform the rest of the agents, but I think this should be something done by Niantic themselves).

You could also add links to redirect people to the forum threads where the bugs are being taken care of or where people should go to state that they are having the same issue, so that all kinetic capsules that are not working can be easily found by @NianticBrian and the team fixing issues, for example.

Note that in Read First they also state that sections are subject to be moved around, so it would also be a good way to just inform us visually what fixes could we expect to be done Soon (TM), what was being worked on but now has been dropped for a later time if a new bug has appeared and is more important than the current reported ones, etc.

Of course, it will also need to be updated frequently or we'll be in the same situation where people has to tag Niantic employees so that they update the current threads' status in the bug report section.

Something similar could also be used to show us what new features are being worked on and how they are moving up and down (or left to right) in the queue of things to come, if at some point someone decides we should have access to a roadmap but doesn't want to give exact dates or promise us that we will have X thing before having D thing. Also, it would give dedicated players like @1valdis or @Perringaiden food for thought before the new features are actually implemented and the players could give some insight about potential misuse, etc.

TL;DR: more features pls

---

I'll do the impossible and actually use the Forum feedback category for forum feedback. Chilling, I know.

In July last year I've already made a topic of some things I'd love to see in the forum by comparing the Ingress to the Catan forum. Some features, most notably the bug tracker, have made it's way over, but some, at least for me, no-brainers haven't.
<div data-embedjson="{"recordID":11380,"recordType":"discussion","body":"<p>With Catan on the horizon, it has received it&#039;s own community forum (https:\/\/community.catanworldexplorers.com), just like Ingress, Harry Potter and Wayfarer. In contrast to the Ingress community however, Catan has a lot more functionality, stuff that I&#039;m not quite sure why it isn&#039;t in the Ingress forum too. Lemme start to list a few:<\/p><p><strong>A functional bug report tool<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/6DJPRC708ZDG\/screenshot-20200702-022433.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/6DJPRC708ZDG\/screenshot-20200702-022433.png<\/a><\/p><p>I believe the Wayfarer forum also has that. Let&#039;s face it, Ingress is not without bugs, and the current way to report them is... inefficient. Why not use the same bug report system you use on the other forums?<\/p><p><strong>Groups\/Communities<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/V0A2JC8R4MBZ\/screenshot-20200702-021904.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/V0A2JC8R4MBZ\/screenshot-20200702-021904.png<\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/3NPBS5M1WN46\/screenshot-20200702-021943.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/3NPBS5M1WN46\/screenshot-20200702-021943.png<\/a><\/p><p>This also seems like a no-brainer to me. One of the main reasons G+ was so beloved is because you could easily create communities for whatever reason you saw fit, be it for local communities, IFS, NL-1331 events or anomalies. All that helped connect agents in an &quot;orderly way&quot; which can&#039;t really be replicated by Telegram, Discord or whatever is used currently. In Catan, although you can&#039;t actually post in them, you&#039;re able to create groups which you can set to either private, public or secret. Those groups would help connect and organize massively in Ingress too. Speaking of connecting:<\/p><p><strong>Community Map<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/DBP9CCWSPNGE\/screenshot-20200702-021437.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/DBP9CCWSPNGE\/screenshot-20200702-021437.png<\/a><\/p><p>Long ago on ingress.com, there was also such a community map on the main ingress.con website which linked to various G+ communities. New agents are often confused as to where to ask for help or where to find a community. Even veteran agents who are looking to connect to a specific area often have to search for a long time to find the specific community within that area. As this map supports lots of links to different services (Telegram, Discord, Facebook and the forum itself), I implore you to please think about putting this into the Ingress forum too. You can even create temporary entries that will be deleted from the map once a certain date has passed, perfect for IFS or other events.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/NQFT2B0EMMKY\/screenshot-20200702-021728.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/NQFT2B0EMMKY\/screenshot-20200702-021728.png<\/a><\/p><p><strong>Private messages<\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/ATV3QNHH31MO\/screenshot-20200702-024812.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/ATV3QNHH31MO\/screenshot-20200702-024812.png<\/a><\/p><p>This one I can kinda understand not being available as some agents are vicious, but still, private messages are way safer then transmitting a message to an agent via COMM. In fact, when the Ingress community first started, the feature was enabled, which probably means <a class=\"atMention\" data-username=\"Ishira\" data-userid=\"5976\" href=\"https:\/\/community.ingress.com\/en\/profile\/Ishira\">@Ishira<\/a> and I are the only ones who ever sent messages via this forum 😅<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/AUABSRPFMMUK\/screenshot-20200702-025138.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">https:\/\/us.v-cdn.net\/6031689\/uploads\/AUABSRPFMMUK\/screenshot-20200702-025138.png<\/a><\/p><p>I would love to see the forum evolve and have it be a place akin to the old G+ days. Please take those things into consideration, as all forums run on the same software, it shouldn&#039;t be too hard to add those things.<\/p><p><a class=\"atMention\" data-username=\"NianticCasey\" data-userid=\"13\" href=\"https:\/\/community.ingress.com\/en\/profile\/NianticCasey\">@NianticCasey<\/a> <a class=\"atMention\" data-username=\"NianticBrian\" data-userid=\"20895\" href=\"https:\/\/community.ingress.com\/en\/profile\/NianticBrian\">@NianticBrian<\/a><\/p>","bodyRaw":"[{\"insert\":\"With Catan on the horizon, it has received it's own community forum (https:\\\/\\\/community.catanworldexplorers.com), just like Ingress, Harry Potter and Wayfarer.
Now I know that some features have probably been disabled to prevent abuse and spam, but the forum has a great tool to combat that: the Level system. Currently, there are 5 forum levels, and the only thing that it does right now is giving L2+ agents the ability to embed links and upload pictures. Level 2 itself isn't that hard to reach either, I believe it's either getting 10 points or being registered on the forum for more then 24 hours, whichever comes first (which was added during the Tessellation so agents could post screenshots)

Here are all the level requirements as I remember them:

L1: Register on the forum, awarded instantly

L2: 50 points/24h on the forum

L3: 100 points

L4: 500 points

L5: 1000 points

Locking some features behind the level system may sound unfair, but it'll keep abuse and spam in check, as people with higher levels normally are the ones that are more active and have good posts. Of course agents can ask their mates to go like their comments and posts, but that case should be rare and can be more easily managed by the moderators.

I'll try to list some features I'd like to see and the level they should require in my humble opinion.

---

Custom profile picture (L2)

In G+, agents created groups for all kinds of purposes: Swag trading, Anomaly organizing, Investigating etc. G+ was perfect for this as groups could be customized, either as public or private, had the possibility for group creators to appoint moderators etc. Since G+ died, no central website or tool had been found that is in use by a majority of agents due to the hurdle of finding one everyone agrees on and the hurdle of actually registering.

The groups add-on for Vanilla Forums seems to fill that hole perfectly and is the feature of all of the once here listed I want the most and which other agents would surly use as well.
Agents have full control over who joins the group and, if set up correctly, also have moderation power like deleting stuff they don't see fit for their group. In addition, they can make announcements that pin to the top of the group and can create Events (if enabled, see below).

A few public groups that I can think of from the top of my head: Regional groups (for new and established agents to connect, plan and share stuff), Operation Essex, Project Lycaeum or the Glyph Journal (for the investigators), Swag brag and trade, and "The Order of The Link Amps" or "Keyhoarders Anonymous" (silly little fun groups).

As groups can clutter the public group directory quite a bit, agents should have reached L3 or higher to prevent that, while also ensuring community leaders can easily establish groups without needing to participate in the forum for weeks or months.
Events

This was also a popular part of G+. No matter if NL-1331 came around, Anomalies were approaching or local farms needed to be organized, G+ could be used to create Events and invite people, as well as gauging interest.

Events are part of the group add-on and can, if I understood it correctly, only be created by normal users in groups they are a moderator in, which means it won't spam the normal forum. In addition, Niantic can create Events in every forum which are then displayed at the side of the forum, giving agents a quick overview of what events are happening.

As Events are part of the Group add-on and can only be created in groups anyway, I don't think a special level gate can be set, which is no problem.

---

Profile Extender (L1)

With Catan on the horizon, it has received it's own community forum (https://community.catanworldexplorers.com), just like Ingress, Harry Potter and Wayfarer. In contrast to the Ingress community however, Catan has a lot more functionality, stuff that I'm not quite sure why it isn't in the Ingress forum too. Lemme start to list a few:

A functional bug report tool

I believe the Wayfarer forum also has that. Let's face it, Ingress is not without bugs, and the current way to report them is... inefficient. Why not use the same bug report system you use on the other forums?

Groups/Communities

This also seems like a no-brainer to me. One of the main reasons G+ was so beloved is because you could easily create communities for whatever reason you saw fit, be it for local communities, IFS, NL-1331 events or anomalies. All that helped connect agents in an "orderly way" which can't really be replicated by Telegram, Discord or whatever is used currently. In Catan, although you can't actually post in them, you're able to create groups which you can set to either private, public or secret. Those groups would help connect and organize massively in Ingress too. Speaking of connecting:

Community Map

Long ago on ingress.com, there was also such a community map on the main ingress.con website which linked to various G+ communities. You can even create temporary entries that will be deleted from the map once a certain date has passed, perfect for IFS or other events.

This one I can kinda understand not being available as some agents are vicious, but still, private messages are way safer then transmitting a message to an agent via COMM. In fact, when the Ingress community first started, the feature was enabled, which probably means @Ishira and I are the only ones who ever sent messages via this forum 😅

Good evening, I wonder how to deal with stalking players of pokemon go? here is a mistake by Niantic, when you have to report a bug in the game "spoofers" Niantic recommends you report in their communication channels with twitter, which I did because of the proliferation of spoofers and false portals, this unfortunately came In view of a community of spoofers on Facebook, which has started to insult my Facebook wall and Twitter, I have had to change the privacy preferences of the 2 social networks, which directly affects my Audio consulting work for Virtual Reality / AR / MR, which is unacceptable, very serious Niantic's error, including Facebook's failure to withdraw their post, is something that directly affects trying to do the right thing in a game, I have even taken legal measures in against aggressive players who have already violated the integrity of some players and are currently continuing their harassing activities, I speak for those people who have no voice and q which continue with the tyranny of niantic's "error" and spoofers,

it's something that has to end.

What solutions does Niantic give us against the harassment we have players for following their "rules", you cannot measure that, we are not statistics, we are the ones who have built your player base and we hope to improve the future of games in general , but this is not an easy task, and it is not remunerated, you have a moral duty to fix this situation, especially John Hanke, you have a moral duty with your faithful Ingress players, who we contribute daily with TIME, SWEAT, TEARS AND MONEY In improving the game, things do not change with a Black Lives Matter beacon, the lives of Ingress players also count, Ingress Player Matters, John, please fix your game, its broken.

Something like what we have when we are in a specific category but applied to the general categories, so that we know that there is new content there:

So, if I click to open the Events subforum, I'd see either that there is new content there or I would see the same notificacion in one of the subforums it contains, and the new content would be tracked more easily.

It should be opened for our comments and screenshots uploads only after PAC upload the file with the passcodes . There is no need to be open earlier in my opinion. Four pages or maybe more by now in TESSERA Round 10 - Perpetua Unmasked with comments that can eventually delay some agents from spotting the needed file and eventually redeem a passcode. The "visitors" of this forum category increased steeply i suppose after the badge announcement.

@NianticCasey @Truthseeker @NianticBrian

For example Release Notes. But when Niantic start a discussion in that category users are not notified in order to visit the page and see the details of the update. At this point the user must manually check the category repeatedly if he wants to check for a new update. Or must wait for a linked announcement in other social media ( tweeter facebook telegram official channel etc) All social media must be used and i personally try to follow and utilize them but a notification possibility for new content in forum categories followed, can make forum more user friendly.

Maybe there also other discussions created about notifications.

Many users are willing to help and that is great!!

Thank you for your efforts of getting community forum to work and evolve in terms of usability and effectiveness

Today you can spent a lot of time reading through the App Feedback section of the community about current bugs with the scanner or related systems like the intel map. It is hard to keep track of all discussions, sometimes the same issue gets raised multiple times. Making sure that a bug has not been posted before can be tedious, because no subcategories are present to narrow down the results of a search. Also some bugs are persistent for months and still are not fixed. If they affect all agents, even minor issues can get cumbersome after a prolonged period of time. Sometimes bugs might get lost / forgotten, keeping track will be easier with a bug tracking system implemented. Agents (moderators) can give a nudge if things don't seem to progress, and it is a possibility to give additional transparency in form of a "we are aware of the issue / development is looking into it / will be fixed in the next patch etc." type of responses.

Besides, the community forum is one of several points to find current status of bugs. In the scanner's help center section you can find a list of known issues, which are also referenced on the homepage. That implies an agent will look and find the option burried in the scanner settings.

From there and in case you look on the website, you will get reffered to the support chat. Reading through many forum discussions and personal experience, the support feedback via mail can be frustrating, missing some much desired transparency and more information, which in most cases can't be given for good reasons.

Also, further information platforms like twitter / facebook / telegram news channels are adding to the multitude of points to look, each with its own pros and cons. Most of the time, information is not spread evenly across those channels, leaving seeking agents in a state of unawareness.

Why not implement a bug tracking system, which can be used to look for the most common bugs, for detailed searches or to bring new bugs to the teams / devs attention. Bug tracking tools come with an array of useful input options, so you can get loads of information from them, e.g.:

subcategories for bugs (scanner, intel, forums, events)

having a upvote-system can help reevaluate dev priorities

pre-sort bugs regarding importance (criticality) and urgency

getting the needed preliminary info needed from the user (version, device, os, details)

The system can also act as a platform to give a preview for development focus regarding bug fixing. Recent release notes in the forum lack the much valued "what are we working on next" section the last couple of weeks.

In my opinion, this is much a needed tool and helps to speed up one of the main issues of Ingress since the release of Prime: getting things to work the way they are supposed to. Having this rather sooner than later will have a great positive influence both on user satisfaction, acceptance for ongoing developments to come and free up some time for those projects in reducing overhead while dealing with bugs.

Greetings Agents,

Can you believe that it’s already been more than 6 months since the initial launch of the Ingress Community?! During that time, there have been more than 40,000 comments across more than 6,000 discussions. To the more than 25,000 of you who have joined us here, thanks for your lively conversations!

In the spirit of continuing to iterate and improve your experience, we wanted to provide an update on what we’ve already done and what we’re currently working on. As always, these suggestions come directly from your input, so please keep it coming!

Features Currently in Development

Moderation and Filters: One of the top pieces of feedback that we continue to see is that our filters are too strict. While we can’t share our list of moderated words and we can’t remove the moderation filter, we’re working on relaxing the list even further to reduce the number of posts that require review.

Game information: We know that importing in-game details like your Faction and Level into the Community was something that we promised before, and it’s still high on our list of feature improvements for the Community. We’re hoping that this will arrive in early 2020.

Recent Changes and Updates

Images: We’ve lowered the bar to move from Level 1 to 2 in the Community and now you only have to be a member for 7 days before you’re able to post images.

Edits: To better empower you to post high-quality content, we’ve increased the window for edits to 24 hours following your initial post.

Reporting Bad Behavior: Due to ongoing misuse of the Abuse and Spam flags, we’ve decided to retire those reactions. You can still report inappropriate behavior to us directly by clicking Flag > Report. We’ve also introduced a new reaction, Disagree, for when you want to express disagreement with a discussion or a comment.

Again, thanks so much for your active participation in the community and for being such valued members of the Ingress family. We’ll be sending out a survey to get more suggestions from you directly, so keep an eye open for that to arrive via email. In the meantime, please continue to share your feedback and requests with us so we can continue to improve this platform to suit your needs.
