Vanguards liked remote recharge cause it essentially gave them the power to give anomaly medals to people sitting on their couch
Vanguards made Niantic spend engineering time to ensure this happened after exo5 and they were announced
Niantic deciding to not listen to them anymore was probably a good thing cause they clearly did not care about agents actually coming to their anomalies (other than trying to give out free medals for sitting on the couch)
@cheatch Remote recharge is a divisive topic. Some people love it and some people hate it.
I wouldn't necessarily lay this at the feet of the Vanguards though. John Hanke was on my team during the Operation Clearfield events, and over drinks I said that it was a horrible thing for anomalies. Once he picked his jaw up off the floor he said, "What? Why? Remote recharge is great!" I explained to him why I thought it took the fun out of anomalies, and saw some understanding from him, but it seemed pretty clear that remote recharge was seen as a massive win inside the company.
I also proposed alternative mechanisms by which people could participate if they had physical limitations or were unable travel to events, and to do so in a way that didn't influence the outcome of any ground competition. They got partway there with the recent decoding challenge portion of the event, but IMO that would have been better treated as a standalone event or events rather than being integrated into ground site scores.
Vanguards had nothing to do with awarding Anomaly medals. That's not how the process worked at all.
Not all Vanguards supported the concept of remote recharging. It was split 50/50 and not along faction lines exclusively.
No Vanguard made Niantic engineering do anything. That's not how the Vanguard program worked. If they had that power, why would they not force other things to happen like make another key locker buyable, ability to create more missions, increase in inventory, or any number of things.
You are making assumptions and stating things as fact to fit your narrative of what you want to believe.
His narrative has been horrible gatekeeping thinking that remote recharging shouldn't warrant an anomaly badge because "you're sitting at home" - like let's not ignore the planning that happens to make these remote recharge rooms even possible with agents transporting keys over many miles. There's many ways to play this game. You'll have a better time not worrying what other people are doing.
Oh, so are we going to establish that giving anomaly medals for FREE for sitting on a couch was a stupid idea?
My post about that was locked and I was slapped with a warning for that line of 'wrong think'
I'm really glad Brian Rose is back cause his style of anomalies were awesome got me really into Ingress in 2014. His post about fixing future anomalies is really awesome, I have faith in Brian Rose.
it's heartbreaking to see a longtime agent go. i hope we'll find a way to win you back, in time. fwiw, and for others reading the thread the message that anomalies veered off course and the desire for events in the original sense has been heard. you can expect to see a return to that concept with the help of local POCs once covid allows for it or we can design something that takes covid into account.
@ace I hope that by "desire for events in the original sense" you meant also Mission Days described in the quoted post. Some people are afraid, aren't ready to go straight abroad to Anomalies, there needs to be some another "stage" to "prepare" them. A Mission Day role for me was (and many new agents would be) the needed chain link. Their frequency for my country (once a quarter or half a year) was perfect to visit them all without too much damage to the wallet, and not too often to get tired of them. New city each time has its benefits also - agents used Mission Days as a cause to visit a beautiful city they've never been to.
Just to point out that Claudia isn't the first to leave, Vanguard or otherwise. Chiming in now is all well and good but where have you been as we have been giving feedback about the problems in your game for years now?
Whilst this might be the case, there have been so many topics with issues (like linking long distances reliably) which have gone unanswered, not even an acknowledgement. I can tell you it's demotivating; people will come together for OPS, only to have it fail because the game doesn't work, not because we have active resistance from the opposing faction.
Someone will take the time to create a topic, only to have it go unanswered and disappear in the archives.
I think it's wise to have some staff man the social media pages and organize and respond to issues on the forums...
Actions speak louder than words. The way I, and others, have been treated by your company are a more accurate reflection of Niantic's view of players and their input than anything you can say here, I'm afraid.
my suggestion would be: talk to the vanguards - even the retired ones - in person. Don't get the filtered version of people around you. Make a video call get them all together and take your time to listen. I did write this post to hightlight some issues and i'm willing to discuss those topics in a meeting with you.
@ace sure I can set up a meeting in the next days. But since I stepped down as vanguard and I have no access to the Niantic chat anymore it’s harder to coordinate.
Can you please, please, please make communication a solid point for your company. I understand you have a lot of passion for things you want your company to represent for today and the future. Note I did not say transparency - I simply am stating communication. No trying to figure out who failed on what but to look at where things didn't present favorable outcomes. It is ok to say if you are disappointed at how something turned out. That's how you learn. The lack of communication always is a void and as @pinesinger stated: actions speak louder than words.
@NianticFumi@ace Echoing the words that @Claudija has already spoken, please invite and engage your entire pool of Vanguards for this meeting. Those that have stepped down still have plenty of skin in the game. We all want to see Ingress improve and the community flourish but we need to work towards that goal together.
Yeah as true as this might be dear @ace it also requires working technology that doesnt crash all the time and a support system in place that want to actually work with the playerbase and not make excuses or ignore the people finding the issues preventing the exploration part of what Ingress is all about (Free exercise generates Free Labour)
if the technology fails and the software cant cope correctly you dont send out a silent assassain to make the world a worse place by shutting down scanners and destroying players fun & stats....oh wait thats exactly what you have done & are still doing.
It is better to discuss the roadmap of this game with all users on this forum. Because many innovations, as we see, are absolutely not pleasant to users. Make an honest democratic vote and build on the game based on its results.
This is very noticeable on the rating of the game on google play. We see where they brought the game. As a rule, the opinions of most players are radically different from the opinions of Nia and Vanguards.
That's an interesting assumption. I'm curious as to why you think the Vanguard opinions are so radically different than the players. Did you speak to every one of us? On all things that concern the game?
You realise we are also players of this game, right? As a rule...

You really can't get over the concept of remote recharging at anomalies can't you?
It's obvious you don't know what the Vanguard program did and it's moments like this that you probably shouldn't say anything.

You really have a very twisted idea of what a Vanguard is and can do. I suggest you read up on the program.

So maybe you didn't read the description for Munich but there will be a off-site medal for recharging:

If you wanna discuss this maybe start a other thread - it will not be seen here.

I wholeheartedly hope this will return.

@pinesinger not talking (posting) doesn't mean not listening (reading).
@1valdis huge fan of mission days. they are/can be the perfect manifestation of the 'explore' part of our mission at niantic.

@Claudija ok. if you are willing to set up a vc i'm willing to listen.
@ace sure I can set up a meeting in the next days. But since I stepped down as vanguard and I have no access to the Niantic chat anymore it’s harder to coordinate.
@Claudija @ace I have email of both of you so I can help coordinate.
Can you please, please, please make communication a solid point for your company. I understand you have a lot of passion for things you want your company to represent for today and the future. @Claudija Can you keep us updated on this the following days, please? Things are starting to get interesting, it seems.
@NianticFumi @ace Echoing the words that @Claudija has already spoken, please invite and engage your entire pool of Vanguards for this meeting. Back To Basics Methinks.
Thank you for all you've done for Ingress. Let's hope Niantic reads your explanation and not only takes it seriously, but acts on it.

Gamers aren't always right what is good for a game they play.
Just let the Vanguards work on this. I see they're handling it quite well, at least in this topic.
This is very noticeable on the rating of the game on google play. We see where they brought the game. As a rule, the opinions of most players are radically different from the opinions of Nia and Vanguards.
Let me remind you that gamers are consumers of the company's products
That's an interesting assumption. I'm curious as to why you think the Vanguard opinions are so radically different than the players. Did you speak to every one of us? On all things that concern the game?
