How works? It is sort of street view now in Ingress Prime for USA? Please explain how it works or share video about it.
I havent seen the feature, but it sounds like is more like Photo Submissions on portal edit. The difference will be that its going to be a SCAN Portal button, and that instead of one picture, we will send several images in sequence, or video (not sure yet) along with GPS data and movement data (so not all devices might be compatible)
It looks like it might be the end of location edits, since the scan will record that too.
What does Niantic need Portal Scanning for? They only need or use it for the new coming game Cartan?
Please explain @NianticBrian @NianticCasey
At Niantic, we are pushing the technological boundaries to enable experiences that haven’t been addressed yet. One illusion-breaking shortcoming of the current state of AR visuals we’re looking to solve is the lack of occlusion, or the ability of your AR subjects to move behind objects, either partially or completely. But there’s more to an immersive AR experience than simply avoiding breaking an illusion - adding the concept of depth allows characters to understand their environment and act more naturally. Occlusion utilizes powerful computer vision where AR elements understand and interact with the real world and objects within them.
Multiple Portal Scans can be taken at each Portal.
Means 1 agent can use Portal Scanning on 1 portal 6000 times to get onyx or mean if 1 or more agents use Portal Scanning on the portal other agents can use Portal Scanning on same portal and we must use Portal Scanning on 6000 different portals to get onyx?
It's pretty obvious that you can do it multiple times on the same portal, but that's really boring and dumb. Probably there's gonna be someway to block it to over abuse on the same portal over and over again.
Yes, please explain more about how our free labor will benefit INGRESS.
I hope Niantic block it soon and we must use Portal Scanning on 6000 different portals.
Per the actual post that Brian made
Multiple Portal Scans can be taken at each Portal, and can help our team of researchers with different camera angles and positions.
Just go back and re-read the post a few times. Maybe slow down some? Granted we are still missing information that everyone wants to know, but rarely does Niantic ever post it all at once. They get better at it sometimes, and other times, it's just the bare minimum. If anything, once it starts to roll out, we will all figure it out. I rarely ever see the updates early in the roll out. So maybe I will find out first hand sometime next week?
Will portal scans be used in wayfarer
Future AR features directly related to portal surroundings. The last step to Ingress glasses.
We are awarded a badge in order to be the work force for such thing to happen.
So no more BS about ingress not being financially independent. As free labour should count ...
Or you officially just look as ingress players as slaves ?
At least give us servers that support the game before making us work for free 😑
I wonder how much data this will generate to upload, as many people don't have unlimited data plans...
Nah future niantic game more likely.
I hope Niantic rebuild the medal and follow design for Ingress now the medal follow the old Ingress 1. Only new events medals fight with nemesis follow new Prime UI or design.
Please fix it before relese Portal Scanning @NianticBrian @NianticCasey
I agree you !
All Nemesis badges designs are trash and this "Portal scanning" even much more, @NianticBrian @NianticCasey re-design badges, we need better looks for our agent profiles.
I hope they allow for delayed uploads when we're back on WiFi.
The Scanning badge is a bit off old ingress style but it's awesome! No need to redesign anything.
Way we need run and spend time on portal scanning if portal scanning dont help Ingress Prime. I only like help Ingress Prime the only app i play from Niantic. I hope @NianticBrian or @NianticCasey can explain if portal scanning help Ingress. 3D portals or other news.
It could be that portalscanning makes the portals position more accurate?
since a time now there has been several portals moved. Both by ingressagents and pogoplayers. That one or two stupid agents out of 50, moves portals to make the game better for them, its not good. But when the same percent of pogoplayers does it, there will raise questions like, are the portals position accurate? Is there something we should know about the data we provides google with?
Just found this. It's probably something similar.
Hard to tell how 3D moldels could work in ingres... Will they appear instead of current portal design?
I think portal scanning will also help remove unsafe, invalid, fake, and expired waypoints.
Agree and I certainly hope so.
Portals are being rejected/removed based on photos taken to make them appear unsafe or inside excluded areas (such as schools). I've had the one at the end of my street removed, reinstated and then removed all because of false photo's that show it as part of a K-12 school when in fact it's not and a public playground completely isolated from the school. The flip side to this is portals are being approved that clearly shouldn't be aproved all because people are getting creative and falsifying their photos
You know If its near 40m of the school area it can be removed, right?
...so where is this feature? I'm not seeing it anywhere.
I've yet to hear of anyone having it available. Most likely Niantic has not yet enabled it. But it eventually should appear in the portal edit menu, provided you meet the criteria (initially limited to level 16 and recursed agents in the US) and have a supported device (unclear exactly what devices are supported). I'm looking forward to trying it out as soon as I can.
If so, that will really hurt many areas. There is a local park that I won't name, but it has a good 50-60 POI's that are tree memorial plaques which were removed from the park a few years ago. That would take a total amount of portals from 100+ down to 40-50.
Also, the slowness in getting portal edits / location edits through the system could impact the overall POI's to be removed as they are in the incorrect location, or people will just be lazy (like OPR/Wayfarer) and claim they don't exist, or mismatched location, ect.
If those POIs are no longer physically there, why should they still be present in the game?
