Indoor submissions what's the real issue?
So this surprised me on a rejection. Can anyone let me know what is up with rejections on indoor submissions? Darth Vader's Lightsaber permanent display at Star wars Land was rejected. It is a new opened area in Hollywood Studios.

- Acceptable: Mounted or free-standing murals, paintings, fountains, sculptures, etc. in a mall or the lobby of a business that also meet the criteria of being visually unique and locally significant.
- Not acceptable: Mounted or free-standing murals, paintings, fountains, sculptures, etc. on or within 40 meters of private residences.
It was clearly updated. Locally significant... Disney World can have Darth Vader's Lightsaber!

I'm interested in others thoughts on these, I really hate theme park submissions everything is decorative but what should qualify? I'm not sure I would rate this display high, it's not The lightsaber used in filming or anything so what is the significance?
It also looks like you are in a line? Should everything in a ride be considered one unit like a playground or can it be pieces?
i just got no pedestrian access to an indoor basketball gym at a community centre. That was it, that was the only rejection reason. How many people did it take to all vote that to get it rejected? Seriously, what, 10 people, 20 people? all choosing no pedestrian access? It's freaking inside a community centre. There's a picture of the hallway as support.
Looks like a replica of a prop, nothing to say its official movie material so wouldn't be inclined to go above 2* based on the pic. Also can't tell if its a permanent display or just a temp display either.
It's at Walt Disney World. It's during a ride line that it is in a permanent glass display because it is darth Vader's lightsaber and at Star wars land.
@nasolenatreska I'm curious what the rest of the nomination looked like. Did you do anything to help verify the location? It's a new area, so satellite might not be up to date. Is there a photosphere? Did you explain it is not temporary? It's fine if it's a prop or replica, but that isn't a super great photo and that's the first impression reviewers get.
Nominations indoors may be eligible, but even the guidelines say they are difficult to get approved.
Photos of the line and the overall display were shown.
You could try to resubmit but overall I say the odds of it passing are a little low. The picture doesn’t do a great job of framing the item and it looks very rushed. If you go back I suggest taking a better overall photo and adding a really good description that sells it.
Title: Darth Vader's Lightsaber
Description: Display showing a replica of the lightsaber used by Darth Vader in the Star Wars trilogy
Substantiation: This permanent display and placard is on display with several other prominent memorabilia inside the [building] at the Star Wars Park in Disney. Shows information and history tied to one of the most influential cinema franchises.
That, and a better photo.
And what went into your nomination?
Replical or original prop ?
Is it really that complicated. It's in a permanent display in solid glass on display at star wars land at disney world. It is well known Disney won't put a replica behind a glass display. Especially when they make the movies and have access to the original props.
Can someone from Niantic response on this indoor submission? I'd rather have a response from niantic than a bunch of others on forums.
Disney definitely puts replicas around their parks. They have one of these at the Dark Side meet and greet at Disneyland.
Original film props are usually kept for future filming or auctioned for charity. And if it was on display it would say that it was an original film prop.
This is just a mass produced replica used to get people to buy one.
Disney didn't produce Star Wars... 🤦♂️
Also, being that there's no indication it is THE original Darth Vader lightsaber, it seems like one of MANY displays inside. It would likely be hard to get anything in there approved unless it's pretty spectacular. The entrance to the attraction would definitely be a good one though.
Disney bought star wars rights in 2012. Yes they do and have produced a few movies since then. As well as an entire new franchise on Disney Plus.
Hopefully Niantic sees how crazy some are on submissions if you can't see the significance of Darth Vader's Lightsaber at Star Wars Land.
Considering the context was Darth Vader's lightsaber, the 2012 purchase of Lucasfilm 30-40 years AFTER production isn't relevant... It's okay to be wrong. Why argue it?
Of course its important, you wouldn't expect a copy of the Mona Lisa to be a POI, because its a fake and not worthy. If its just a generic replica of something then it has no worth as a POI, in essence its a mass produced object.
There is nothing significant about a replica of a prop, doesnt matter if its at starwars land or not, still doesnt make it worthwhile.
There's no issue with it being indoors, the problem you have is its just not a good candidate
They have, it's the first topic on "potentially confusing nominations" in the help section. https://wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/help#potentially-confusing-nominations
Not enough voters read these things, that's why I try and quote Niantic when I think of it, which is not often enough.
Indoor nominations
Indoor nominations are eligible, so long as they are accessible to the public in some capacity. Note that these nominations are less likely to be approved because they are more likely to be on private residential property (see Ineligible Wayspots) or to not be areas in which groups can congregate and play comfortably.
It's a great candidate as It's Darth Vader's Lightsaber!
A replica of a prop is mass produced and so doesn't make it a good candidate.
One of the originals used in the films would do, a copy of it is just not worth it.
When Mark Hamill saw a Luke Skywalker original go up to auction, he said
"Be Advised-There was no ONE lightsaber I used in the films, but many, MANY, both for myself & my stunt-double," Hamill tweeted. "Multiple duplicate back-up props are commonplace during production-When the handle ridges were cutting my hands, they even made a few w/ soft sponge ridges! #BuyerBeware."
Even if you ignore that there is ZERO indication it's an original, you're not going to ever have "the" original. The likelihood of this passing is low, because it really isn't THAT interesting, AND you can't very well prove the location is accurate. Did you make a photosphere inside?
Proving darth Vader's Lightsaber is at star wars land? Really?
Where does it say anywhere that that one was even film used?
Proving something worthwhile is there is what is significant, you may as well have submitted a trash can for the significance of it. Its a generic replica, its not a good POI as its mass produced.
And you need to prove exactly where it is, you cant just expect people to rate it higher than 3* if there is not the evidence there.
If its inside a building then it is always best to create and upload a photosphere to show its location.
@NianticCasey can you chime in on this? Clarification on indoor submissions would be helpful. I can't comprehend how people can't justify a submission at Disney World. It is Darth Vader's Lightsaber!
I'm just wondering how a topic on indoor submissions became a debate about the validity of lightsaber
I don't believe ANYONE is discounting indoor submissions. Absolutely valid. The question here is the quality of a replica prop as a Waypoint, even then a poor quality rushed photo.
I will go back to my original stance, if you got a really good photo that wasnt rushed and added a great description this could work as a Waypoint. The current photo just wont do.
Lots of great indoor submissions are secure in permanent glass displays just like this one. Having clarification from niantic makes it easier if they are allowed.
