Intel Map Regularly Broken
In this post, we highlighted that the map is failing to load all portals.
And @NianticBrian said that it's a temporary issue where some portals aren't loading.
Well, it's no longer temporary and some portals. Now the Intel map is constantly failing to load and so we can't see any portals at all.
Possible results:
- Page never loads and is constantly "Waiting for intel.ingress.com".
- Page goes to a 502 error
- Page shows the base map, and then every request fails constantly.
- Sometimes, just sometimes, when the moon's align, we get the Intel map.
This is becoming intolerable. Back in 2014, when Niantic instituted a sudden Intel ban on anyone using the map too much, every Operator got temp banned at one point or another. This feels more frustrating, because it's not due to anything we're doing.
The map simply doesn't work.
The Intel map is the lifeblood of the game. Unlike PoGo and HPWU who'd like a map, we need the map to plan out fields larger than the 500m you can see in the scanner. Large scale operations are completely failing because the map is so unreliable. We cannot continue to play under these conditions and it's simply one more nail in the coffin that is the Ingress player base.
Fix it. And fix it now.
Comments
Ingress Intel is looking like its gone. I mean really gone. Like somebody made a big big booboo and they haven't the foggiest idea of what to do about it.
Hopefully they won't break iitc again....
We just pushed an update that should address the temporary 502 server errors, and if it's still happening and a hard refresh doesn't help, please let me know.
It appears to be working again right now. I'll update on how it goes over the day.
Thanks!
Portals are still missing
This was to fix the 502 issues. The caching issue is ongoing.
And, I just got a new 502 error, @NianticBrian
We're continuing to work on updates to the Intel Map so you may experience temporary server errors through the next hour or so. I'll post an update to this thread later today, thank you.
We've finished our Intel Map updates and are continuing to monitor this. If you're still seeing an
Error: Server Error
message after doing a hard refresh, please let me know, thank you. There is an other error: sometimes not all portals are loaded, like at that post: https://community.ingress.com/en/discussion/7314/intel-not-loading-all-portals/p1
when refreshing over the local park, I can get about 80-90% of the portals to load there. Never all.
Every map reload shows at least one fail
map: done 1 failed
Developer tools within Chrome (79.0.3945.88 (Official Build) (64-bit) (cohort: Stable)) shows
public chat error. Waiting for next auto-refresh.
Favicon shows 404 error

Stock intel has a few more errors on it. Looks like you are using some retiredversion in your scripts.
@NianticBrian ping you so you see this. You might have some cookie issues too with that embedded link to YouTube for the Ingress Report.
Under the social button there are 4 links to G+ pages that have been gone since, ummm...yeah...
http://investigate.ingress.com/ is gone, the community page is gone.
Facespace and twitter likely work.
Does anyone review anything on this page?
one more thing
In addition to the intel map NOT loading, ‘opps something went wrong’ on numerous attempts. For those of us who use IOS we cannot get any Passcodes !!
So for everyone keeping up to date, current behavior is minimal actual 502 errors.
However, now, the getEntities and getPlexts calls are returning an empty JSON value {}. Under IITC, this generates a blank error and attempts to retry the request, which may or may not eventually succeed. Under stock, there is no retry and it simply fails to load any subtile on a failed request.
Note, most of the text seen here is actually generated from the IITC handleResponse function.
Intel map is barely functional right now.
Sometimes refreshing the page shows a map with no portals. Sometimes the portals load but the COMM says "Oops! Something went wrong...". Sometimes the portals and COMM load, but clicking on a portal to see its details won't load any details.
And as reported by @Qu33nAnG3L above, attempting to redeem a passcode via the Intel map often returns a blank box (experience tells me the blank box means the passcode was not redeemed). This is particularly bad when there is a timed challenge going on that requires a passcode to be redeemed.
Still up the spout here. Works occasionally after a lot of refreshes. Sort it out.
I wonder if the responses are getting truncated quite often.
If they end up zero length IITC will retry, otherwise the portal info that should be nearer the end of the request gets discarded.
This might be detectable client-side if the exact requests and responses were examined (I must get around to setting up the dev environment for IITC mobile).
Server side it might be collecting all the info but geting the wrong length (or failing to allicate/extend a buffer) when doing the JSON encode.
Since it all worked for 7 years something must have changed late November to break it.
intel map all dead for me now, nothing loads in comm or any portals etc...
Likewise, effectively dead here as well. Only looking at a small section of the local area and am getting no portals and occasionally getting the comms log after a refresh, but that's about it.
I would recommend anyone unable to use Stock, to try IITC-CE. While the base map ends up empty, IITC has retry methods built in that get more of the map loaded.
Another related bug is that requests for the 'region scores' fail about half the time.
Still dont work when Intel loading portals. Please fix the bug soon.
I see that I'm not the only one… So just reporting that it's January 2nd and intel is still broken! Same issues that have been reported before, portals missing, not loading, resonators and mods…
i think the Intel map will fix SOON
I'm still seeing a lot of 'blank results' @NianticBrian. Only a few 502s now, but the blank requests still fail to resolve into actual portals on Stock, and only because IITC sees them as a failure and retries, does it manage to get anywhere approaching 90% of tiles loaded (though almost never loads all 100% succesfully).
Intel is essentially inaccurate and useless at the moment.
Is the server overloaded due to pogoers ?
Is the new server undersized?
Is it a buggy code?
Can you investigate the reason of the failures and definitively fix the broken intel? @NianticBrian
It's really bad at the moment. Even worse than before New Year.
