Niantic's next game?

BonzorkBonzork ✭✭✭

What do you think Niantic's next game should be? I think they should create a new adult-oriented game with a lot of depth, like Ingress, but with more things to do in-between POIs. I don't think just adding stuff to Ingress would cut it, I think a fresh start would be a good idea. It would be cool to brainstorm a premise and game design. Another drawback of Ingress is the possibility of an uninformed player messing things up for their team, or an informed player won't have silly fun because they can mess things up for other people. That should be avoided.

Since their next game was announced (and not yet released), are you already talking Harry Potter: Wizards Unite? Or beyond that?

  • BonzorkBonzork ✭✭✭

Beyond that. Wizards Unite already exists fully formed, for the most part, I'm interested in the game that hasn't been thought of yet

  • MajeyeMajeye ✭✭✭

@Bonzork fair enough, haven't really put much thought into a 'next' game of sorts. Though, I'll be interested to see what happens now that AR games are cause for controversy in the Department of Public Safety & Department of Motor Vehicles everywhere.

Minnesota already passed a law that goes into effect August 1st, making it an escalating offense to even hold your phone while driving your vehicle.

  • Good question... Actually I don't wanna see any licensed game... Walking Dead, Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters... all became boring like hell. Maybe similar to Delta T but medieval time... building fortresses, forging alliances... Age of Empires AR :-)

  • Are you talking about a different game (like PoGo or the Harry Potter thing) it a kind of "Ingress 2.0", or a successor to Ingress with it's own universe but still a bit like Ingress?

I think Ingress don't need a successor for now, Prime is very recent and they are still working on updates, the game have a strong community, yes some me hanics aren't the best but it's far from needing a successor imo.

Also what do you mean with adult-oriented? Not something like PoGo?

    AR/FPS Syndicate.

@Majeye Georgia passed the same law last year, not that it keeps people from texting and driving. 😜

@Gaidon though true, still detrimental to everyone else around those that do it. lol

I would imagine that most of their resources are going to Wizards Unite. Potter heads are fiercely loyal, done well the game will be a huge moneymaker.

I don't have a fully formed suggestion. Just I'd like a non fighting game. Ingress is a dance between blue and green. Though there is a "fight" * in ingress there is no fighting of creatures like in Pogo and WU

Many will read this comment and scoff.... but i feel i just dont need fight animations it my life.

    * and quite a bit of bad tempers between players at times

Why next game when ALL of this Can be implement in prime?

I would love to colect things, crafts, Trading cards, and that album thing from HP with Ingress folks.

Still waiting for endgame. Or a good fantasy based rpg, classes and all.

  • BonzorkBonzork ✭✭✭

I do agree, I think Niantic could use their real world engine to create a really good traditional, but location-based, RPG

  • HydracyanHydracyan ✭✭✭✭✭

What about a partnership with the Name of the Wind series?

While Wizards Unite is using tech from Niantic, it is not "their" new game. They have an interesting AR engine and I hope we will see some integration in Ingress Prime like Pokemon Go gets features like the advanced photo feature. Also there have been photos of an AR-enhanced roleplaying (actually called "RPE") experience.

  • i think Ingress Prime IS their next game. They have full control over this game and once they switch over to the new servers i think we will see it constantly evolve.

Here's a thought : a game like Pokémon Go where you collect an army...maybe of humans though. You battle other players or npcs by playing a variety of mini-games. If you beat a mini game, you collect that game board. Then you can capture a POI, place one of your humans, and set one of your game boards as the challenge that someone else would have to beat to knock your human out of the POI.

  • Some kind of fantasy agriculture, mining, resource gathering and transport game.

POIs could be "exploted" for ressources like water, wood, minerals, plants and players have to trassport those ressources between POIs. Fields can need water and minerals to grow plants. Plants are harvested to feed animals, etc.

Players could be some kind of nature spirits / fey tending to tribes of creatures by providing ressources, housing, etc.

Instead of levels, players could get an amount of influence that grows and dwindles depending on how helpful they are. A bit like Black and White.

Maybe eventually Rogue AI and DarkTech start wandering around the map and you have to create triangles around them to contain and destroy them.

  • BonzorkBonzork ✭✭✭

I was thinking about my mini-game focused idea earlier...so you wander around the POIs, let's call them buildings. You can put a minion into an empty one, and pick a game board to protect them with (like a level of candy crush, space invaders, memory, etc). If somebody else has a minion in a building, you can choose to spend some coins to challenge that minion, and you collect a challenge token. Later, if that other players' minion is still the owner of that building, you can bring up that token and use it to play the game board, potentially from your couch. If you lose, that other player gets the coins that you put ante'd up. If you win, you collect that game board and your minion takes over the building that you challenged, and you place a game board from your collection to protect them.

I hope Niantic relese Endgame. When they talk about it and share it looks very cool. @niant@NianticMac

If you want some insight into what Niantic wants their future games to look like, you might want to look at the demos they post on YouTube. They mostly seem to be testing ideas that get players closer to the AR and interacting more directly than territory-control games:

I think Niantic should definately make another game, reflecting the only original game they've ever made. Names like "Redacted Prime" and its prequel "Cyberpunk 1331" come to mind, but I still can't get my mongo to poke me so possibly ignore my input.

  • jontebulajontebula ✭✭✭✭✭

@XK150 First video with statue Endgame?

  • HydracyanHydracyan ✭✭✭✭✭

I would like something like age of empires using the maps, being able to construct a base, defending it, exploring the word searching for resources and being able to attack other players base, sending out troops and they will travel across the roads only both while attacking and while collecting resources.

I just think that the use of the same points of interest again and again is starting to get old. Maybe one with random points based on geolocation, altitude, etc

  • I'd like to see something in the genre of sci-fi fantasy... dungeons and gargoyles, griffins and dragons, magic and might....

  • BonzorkBonzork ✭✭✭

I just realized my dream "POI Ownership" AR game could be Monopoly branded, a collaboration with Hasbro.

What I like about ingress is the constant moving from Poi to Poi. Pogo and Wizards has too much emphasis on the Minigames. You are constantly standing around playing mini games without moving. I don't want ingress to turn into that and I would rather see a new game that again requires you to move around a lot.
