Replace the "Update to continue" message with a in-game message one day before the pushed update.

I find this annoying. It wasts my data when i don't have wifi. And you just can't continue to play if you don't update it.
A better solution would be, to give us an ingame warning one day before the new pushed update. (i don't use automatically update apps in google play store).

Niantic does not decide when the updates are pushed on playstore / appstore
However, Niantic does decide when to force the update by locking out all older versions from their servers.
@starwort indeed, that's what i wanted to say.
It's a good idea to have automatic updates enabled in the play store. Otherwise you can miss security-critical updates for example for the browser. Your smartphone is connected to the internet 24/7. You want all the applications you use to be up-to-date with latest security patches at all times.
While it's true that Niantic do not decide when updates go live across app stores, they do chose to give some leeway before locking out older versions. Would adding a notification along the lines of 'please update within the next 48 hours' be a good solution?
Sometimes a new item or feature forces the issue. If Niantic changes the way data is sent to the app, the client needs to update so it knows what to do with that change.
Some of us have to deal with some pretty restrictive data caps. Updating the app in the field is not possible for everyone.
Yes, that's my point, though. If you have auto update enabled in the play store, Ingress will have been updated in time before update is enforced. People will usually only run into this problem when they have automatic update disabled. Or on secondary devices that have been turned off for some time.
It's also good idea to read the changelog BEFORE you update the app. Notifications from Play Store are good enough to decide what to do and when.
Yes, PLEASE! This is so frustrating!!!
