Link Length Under Fields: I propose a compromise
in General
It appears that linking under fields is here to stay but I have seen some differences of opinion on just how far under a field an agent can link.
I propose the max link distance be 1km under fields but make it so the max link length can be modified by link amps with the same multipliers applied to portals not under fields.
The reason I think this is a good compromise is that it makes longer links achievable without a special event but also make it resource intensive to use the feature constantly.
This also restores a lot of value for rare link amps that had been lost since softbanks became available.

I'm not opposed to your proposal because I don't really have a horse in the linking-under-fields race, but I'm confused by your phrase "value for rare link amps that had been lost since softbanks became available". Weren't rare link amps always junk mods?
(I'm half-joking.)
I'd rather see a scaling link distance based on average portal density within an area so the rural folks aren't left out. 8km is a bit much for urban play.
The 8 km is technically temporary - it will be removed after the last round of Discoverie in mid December. I think the standard 1 km limit is a good compromise because portal density is already factored in.
The standard is 500m, not 1 km
A variable link range based on density of portals would do nothing but frustrate players not knowing if a link is going to work until they try.
Rare link amps have almost no value because an L5 portal can already link 160km.
Increasing a portal range from 1km to 2km is going to happen a lot more often than needing to go from 160km to 320km.
A rare link amp adds to that range. It's in the name: link amplifier. It benefits by adding range to low level portals.
Rare link amps are awesome! They still give you +1 to engineer despite no one wanting them!
Names don't mean much anymore.

To be fair, that never meant much of anything. Am I rite
