Question on ToS Rule about Glyph hacking for someone else
in General
Hello, my wife recently started playing ingress. She hates glpyh hacking and refuses to try. Is there a rule which prohibits me from Glyph hacking for her? Thanks!
Note: I have not glpyh hacked for her once, asking in advance :))

Yes. As stated in the ToS:
"Niantic prohibits cheating, (...). Cheating includes, but is not limited to, any of the following behavior, on your own behalf or on behalf of others:
(...)
* Playing with multiple accounts for the same Service;
* Sharing accounts;
(...)"
Go for it bro.
You'll definitely have some folks who will accuse you of everything under the sun if they see you handling two phones. Best of luck..
Then again, as someone with over 600k hacks and exactly 61 (event required) glyph hacks. What's with the pressure for her to glyph? Let her play her way. Its more likely she'll stay with the game. Also, she may change her mind later, but it should be her choice.
And they would be right if those two phones contain two different accounts.
You shouldn't use someone else account for anything, even for glyph hacking.
However, you may glyph-hack with your own account and then drop the hacked items for your wife to pick up.
Against the rules. I've seen worse get normalized. It's not uncommon to see one agent playing with multiple accounts. Nobody really cares anymore. The game is dead so at least someone still plays. May be against the rules but you can't get banned for it. Niantic will never answer you here.
If the wife is physically with you at the time then yes it's technically against the rules but it's one of the least possible rule violations there is.
Compare this situation: you are driving a car but you leave your phone on the dashboard and a companion in the passenger seat touches it from time to time to tap-hack portals so that you get the unique visits. Against the rules? Yep. Will anything happen? Nope. It's better from a road safety point of view than touching the phone yourself.
The traditional rule (which mostly died out in the PoGo mindset invasion) was this:
These days, Niantic's both ability and willingness to police cheating are... questionable at best. It really comes down to how your community feels (if you even have one).
As others have said it's technically against the rules. It also happens sometimes. I think a reasonably pragmatic position on this is whether someone gains an advantage by doing this, and if so how much of one.
If both people are present at the location and there's no significant advantage granted to either player then it's a no-harm situation. One example from my history was handing my phone to a dear friend and asking them to hack a portal. Why? That hack got me platinum hacker and I thought it would be fun to surprise them with the badge popup. I've also seen passengers do house keeping tasks for a driver like recycling or capsuling gear. I've seen someone guide a novice by taking their phone and walking through the process while explaining the steps. In all of these cases there is essentially zero advantage to anyone and while it violates the letter of the rules I don't think it violates the intent.
In another case I saw someone grab their partner's phone to complete the last bit of a banner mission because their partner had just gotten ill and wasn't able to get to a bit that required them to walk. Advantage to the player? Very tiny, and almost entirely decorative. (The only reason I even remember this is that one of the players was very hard-line about people cheating, to the extent that they would berate people in comms if they exited a park two minutes after closing time. I enjoyed the irony.)
In the case of glyphing for someone else... is there an advantage? I think so, yes. It's not the worst cheating I can think of as long as your wife is present at the time but it's not something I would do except perhaps for a demo. I think it would be better for you to farm and drop gear to her rather than farming on her account. If your wife wasn't present at the time then that would be much worse.
Thank you for being concerned about the ethics of this!
If the number of accounts matches the number of agents present no-one cares. If one person rolls up in a car and suddenly 5 drones appear at the farm then we got a problem.
^This - usually as long as the owner of the account is physically present, nobody usually cares except extreme purists. I and many others will get upset once MORE accounts than legitimate owners are around.
@Hosette , ethics cannot be associated with Ingress. Not when win-trading, stalking, and social engineering often happen in this game. So, please don't use that term.
@Otrera35 You are familiar with the parable of the blind man and the elephant, yes? The part you're feeling might feel like it's caked in mud and reek of excrement but that doesn't mean that the whole game is the tail end of the beast.
In your area is a green player, with a blue player wife/partner (you will know exactly whom I am referring to). I consider that to be a rather major breach of ToS. Especially when the blue player wife/partner rarely plays and only seems to crop up when the green player needs things doing.
Isn't the blue player wife/partner supposed to be recursing green, or so you were told? At their current progress that will be sometime in the mid 2030's!
They've already been caught out blatently win trading for uniques, captures and other gameplay.
@MJ78 I kind of feel like win-trading for uniques is a very small sin in the grand scheme of things. If people are just single-capping for uniques (as I did around 350 times this weekend... Pioneer isn't gonna double onyx itself) that doesn't have much of an impact on other people's gameplay and it feels very different to me than something like repeatedly smashing and building a portal over and over again to gain AP.
There seems to be a DOUBLE STANDARD with the reply, particularly with win-trading. Perhaps playing with multiple accounts with multiple bots/users out there is also a very small sin for you and Niantic. As for the parable you mentioned above, it is not applicable at all because it is 100% caked in mud.
Speaking from experience?
When it is obvious that the person always commenting after every reply you make in this forum is a #1 FAN of yours :)
You love the attention, don't be prude. 😂
Your persona on here is hilarious because it's so fake.
Do you want screenshots released of all the hateful things you've said to me?
Nobody is stalking you, your local community tried to play with you and you LOST YOUR MIND at people, you constantly accuse EVERYONE of stalking you, even people that don't even drive. There is a reason neither of your local faction choose to play with you or include you in their community. Please do some massive introspective work and stop running your crazy train through the forums.
It is against the rules, if she hates glyph hacking, simply don't glyph hack.
