Yeah, the easier to setup and the specific bit about "to earn the badge..." were my reasoning.
I think the other bit about destroying is just like "if they were to suddenly release Liberator, they'd mention the requirement for the portals to be destroyed in order for you to then capture them, not because it's specifically how the badge/stat works, but just because that's the basic concept of how portal ownership mechanics work - technically... you could get Onyx Liberator without ever firing an XMP/US and having 0 points towards Purifier... it's almost certainly not going to be like that, but it's technically possible.
Going to end up having to capture all the portals in a given area or try to remember which were Machina. Be nice if they added a portal filter for previously Machina owned.
Very curious on what kinda time you have to recapture as well. A couple minutes, a checkpoint or an entire cycle? I can’t imagine it would be anything longer than a checkpoint, but very curious. Any groups doing research?
It's painfully obvious that NOBODY on the ingress prime "team" actually plays it. I'm not talking about medals but overall UX. Otherwise the amount of bugs and dumb interface decisions wouldn't be so high still.
Badge on par with liberator, if they don't turn all neutral portals machina then no one will get onyx before the shut this game down according to the posts I've read on here lately /s
As an Agent who just completed 300K portal captures and is now ranked 5th worldwide for the Liberator badge, even the updated 40K is way too high for Onyx. A more reasonable Onyx rating would be way down at 10k.
NIA also needs to apply it retroactively, they definitely have the stats to do so. I'd be at 1750 captures given my pre-existing Machina stats.
Maybe the plan is to have Machina spawn like crazy and become more common than neutrals. Otherwise , the tiers beyond silver are extremely high.
In 7 years, living in a city of 1 million, I have neutralized 17,000 portals and captured 28,000. I have played enough to recurse 8 times; it’s not like I’m a casual player.
Yes, not all badges should be the same difficulty but this onyx seems potentially unattainable for all but the most extreme elite (nuts?) agents. Particularly since 1 very active local reclaimer could potentially block every other local agent from reclaiming.
Edit to add: I did a quick check of badge progress among our most active players in my local area. The hardest onyx badges are pretty consistently: pioneer, explorer, engineer and connector, followed by liberator, purifier, hacker and mind controller (the order of these last 4 depends heavily on play style). So liberator, with no unique or previous owner restrictions, is already a fairly high end onyx badge.
This onyx is nearly unattainable, I’ll have to drive an hour away, just to get half of bronze. I hope Nia drastically increases the spawn rate for this badge, my humble thoughts
Remember, some badges are multi-year endeavours, you're not meant to get it quickly.
Machina portals are also very weak, so it's not like smashing them is too hard, and the stat also fits in with how to prevent Machina, removing neutrals from the field.
It’s not that it’s hard to neutralize and capture a Machina portal, it’s that , very likely, even for very active agents, there will either be too few Machina to realistically achieve a platinum in 5-10 years of play or Machina would have to be absolutely rampant.
Maybe it will be possible to come up with a Machina farming exploit, but I’m not sure that’s a particularly good idea either.
So,to "invite" M portals (and have some progress with this medal) somewhere closer now i need NOT to capture neutrals and possibly NOT cover area with fields?
Yes,numbers are crazy and i thought it will be like extra purifier badge (M resonators/portals destroyed was in stats, not "recaptured").
Interesting 🤔!!! Well, that's good 😊!! Cause I'll destroyed all Machina XM portals by using the ultimate secret weapon, the MASSIVE Level 8 XMP Bursters in my capsules at my inventory items!!!
And we are just getting started, because we're the Resistance agents!!!
First of all – thank you. I hit my onyx Liberator, the day before this was announced and felt slightly underwhelmed that I was running out of other badges to get onyx in.
While I don’t agree with the tiers, I appreciate that there is an assumption of longevity of ingress.
I was very vocal when Scout Controller was announced. The tiers were ridiculously high and thankfully Niantic lowered the onyx from 15,000 to 12,000.
40,000 for Onyx. I just need to break that down. So, to score a point, you need to cap a portal that was previously owned by Machina. This is literally the Liberator badge but a lot more restrictive.
Machina by nature spawns where there isn’t much human player activity, it’s a great way to supplement human players in towns and cities were there aren’t much. So, play in the game “as intended” capturing portals, making links and fields hinders your ability to work on this badge.
It is also not possible to share this badge, as once I have capped a previously red portal, a friend cannot do the same. This means that I am against all others in my XFAC community.
If I was to cap 20 previously read portals a day, it will take 2000 days or 5.479 years. I live in a fairly big city of about 200,000 people. It would not be feasible to sustainably get 20 contributions to this badge a day.
I liked the idea of Machina, give me a reason to explore towns that were usually neutral, I could scores some AP, work on my purifier and it was an extra incentive for me to get out and explore.
I understand the intention of this badge, being to capture the portal is to disincentivise letting off XMP and leaving the portals neutral, but I can’t help but feel this unnecessarily complicates the process.
If we have another wave when Machina stops spawning and these inactive towns, return to neutral portals, would the next person to cap, those portals get the points or is there a window that the portals have to be capped after the red is smashed for it to count, if that is the case, an extra layer of eligible portals would be helpful.
In summary, I really like Machina and think it has breathed new air into the game. I have smashed 9101 Red resonators, 1408 red links and neutralised 1108 red portals. I think using a new metrics that doesn’t backdate is a bit of a kick in the teeth to those of us who have engaged with this new feature, given Niantic data and feedback about how we engage with it, what is a balanced spread etc.
The new idea of capping previously red portals. Cool, it’s whatever, now what I would have chosen, but thought has clearly gone into it, but this badge is ridiculous and largely unfeasible.
I would argue that it is largely unfeasible because Machina spawns where there is insufficient human player activity, by design, players cannot score by playing as they do, it is an inconvenience. Dedicated and active players will just not see machinery locally, and as I highlighted earlier, the requirements will take years.
This medal is funny, in my area this means i need to drive to other villages and farm these portals there. Some villages near me have around 10 portals. Driving to each village takes 8km. So i need to waste 16000km on fuel an visit these towns 2000x to get onxy xD
Definitely a time consuming badge in terms of the requirements needed for it to be awarded onto your scanner in the current state.
Maybe one/multiple of the following changes would help lessen the grind overall but still retain the challenging nature of the new badge while improving an agents flexibility on how to achieve this endeavour:
* 1 point increments are awarded for every Machina resonator destroyed.
* 1 point increments are awarded for every resonator deployed on a portal previously controlled by Machina.
* Variable point increments are awarded when a previously controlled Machina portal is caputed based upon the level of the portal when it was killed (P5=5 points, P8=8 points, ect, ect)
Comments
I hope that you really crank the virus up to 11 for this. Infect all the grey portals!
GO VIRUS GO!

It is really so much. We never have 5k capture after deploy. So much time, so mucht kilometers, so mucht buster, just so mucht numbers for the medal.
I want just play, not take my times, my monnaie for play with a bot who don't play with the same rules...
Changes the step for medal. We make a lot works for playing with machina. Be just for all.

The numbers required are crazy! They need to be 1/10 of that or less.
I have been pushing for Liberator because it will be my next Onyx.
Portals Captures 38780 [40000 for Onyx]
Portals Neutralized 16990
I bet less than 30% of what I neutralized I then captured.
It's painfully obvious that NOBODY on the ingress prime "team" actually plays it. I'm not talking about medals but overall UX. Otherwise the amount of bugs and dumb interface decisions wouldn't be so high still.

I found this on a chat group.

That badge is ludicrously stupid.. glad I quit while the game was ahead! Right now time to battle 50 team rocket bosses.
This onyx is nearly unattainable, I’ll have to drive an hour away, just to get half of bronze. I hope Nia drastically increases the spawn rate for this badge, my humble thoughts
Got 13 points this evening in a park. Unless they crank Machina up, loads of agents are going to be vastly disappointed.
If they crank it up too high too fast, other parts of the game begins to break.
Lol is ifu actually a thing or is that some sort of really funny joke? IFU 🤣 NOW I'VE HEARD IT ALL.
Onyx is more than twice the number of portals I've ever visited in 8-9 years of relatively high level play.
Ridiculous.
Liar. We all know you're the entire "Ingress Founders Union."
Gold is almost impossible, let alone platinum. Onyx maybe in fifty years of gameplay. Whomever creates the tiers cannot actually play.
Remember, some badges are multi-year endeavours, you're not meant to get it quickly.

The amount of Machina resonators that have to be destroyed in order to liberate 40,000 portals is more than onyx purifier.
Seems like you need a very large city with no players so that every portal can become red and it will still take years to get onyx, if ever really.
implying they aren't to apply machina badges for the retroactive stats

So yes,another forever-closed medal.
A new medal about Machina Report?

A bit of feedback here.

I suggest the following tiers
Bronze: 100
Silver: 1,000
Gold: 5,000
Platinum: 10,000
Onyx: 20,000
Onyx is meant to be hard and not easy, but depending where u live even gold can take years for some...
This medal is funny, in my area this means i need to drive to other villages and farm these portals there. Some villages near me have around 10 portals. Driving to each village takes 8km. So i need to waste 16000km on fuel an visit these towns 2000x to get onxy xD
Maybe i will do 100 and never do that again.

That's how I'm looking at the tiers as well. We don't know how the machina will be produced in the months ahead.
