Late portal decay time

  • According to my observation, instant neutralize did not happen, but the portal decayed 15% multiple times - like twice a day or so. Unfortunately, further observation of that specific portal was interrupted by destroy. Some are able to distract academic work with play 😅

But seriously, some information on how long this will be so, would be nice.

  • We have same problem in Almaty, Kazakhstan with huge number of portals. In “green” city, there new field can be create only after decay of anchor portals it is alarming situation. We are waiting to troubleshooting that.

  • I have links to portals in Almaty. All portals were stuck at the penultimate bit level for more than 2 days. 1 of them didn't run out of battery until the day it was attacked:

and here are some more links. Portals drain every day until the minimum number is left, and then freeze:

Noticed yesterday evening that problem is worldwide.

Some portals (483 keys, hard to monitor each) were fully charged since last Friday(!!) and some were decharged a bit more than should.

  • I now have portals that have decayed just once in 5 days, for me the game is unplayable right now.

It's almost a month since this problem first appeared and we still have nothing from you @NianticBlue, please give us an update on your investigation

  • Reproducing the problem is really trivial. And finding the source of the problem should also not take that long if the right person would just look into it.

It is quite possible that actually fixing the problem could take longer depending on the root cause, but here some communication would really help.

Some portals seems to decay 2x on a day (the 2nd one european night) . I know because i want to use up my hyper cubes and recharged all the portals i capped during the day . When i wake up , i could recharge them again. So i think those 30% decay is debunked , but is in fact 2 x 15 % decay on a day

  • Yes, it is like when they do not decay on one day they will catch up later resulting in double decay (or even more).

I recently had a cluster of portals in an area where no one is playing, all captured roughly at the same time and fully charged. When I checked back five days later they where all in different decay states, all from no decay, one day, two days, down to the actually expected five days 😕

  • Same issues (listed below) as reported by others occurring in Mumbai, India as well for the last month.

    1. 2x decay in a day
    2. No decay for days
    3. Random Decay times

Is killing the game, Niantic wake up!

  • The lack of response from Niantic is telling. My own guess is that the timing of portal decay is a very low priority on their servers, and if they are cutting back on server capacity, this would be a likely result. I'm starting to see other effects, such as portal hack cooldowns not being correct. If this continues, they are letting the game die.

This issue is now over a month old, yet still no updates as to what is going on, or more importantly a fix to the problem.

    What is going on?

I seem to have keys to portals that have not decayed at all for several days (!).

If this will last longer, those portals could decay from 100% to zero in a matter of minutes if the decay updates happen at once. This is really a huge problem.

I have many that haven't decayed in over 3 days now and I lost a bunch of portals I wanted to keep that decayed 4 times in a bit over 24 hours. Capturing those 4 portals required payment into a park and a cell booster. It almost seems like some portals are doing a catch up to where they should be after 2 or 3 days. This many bugs being unresolved for so long is not acceptable from a company that was valued at $9 billion a couple years ago.

If you live in a big city where there is a lot of movement from Res to Enl and vice versa, you won't notice this bug too much.

However if you live on a rural area, or an area with little opposition gameplay, then you will definately notice this bug.

The latest game update brought us a couple of bug fixes, however STILL nothing for this issue.

I'm strongly considering being yet another C.O.R.E player who will cancel their subscription. I'm not going to keep paying out for a game that is broken, with a lengthy timeline for various issues being fixed. It really does frustrate and ruin the game.

Other games out there can seem to push through updates fixes in a reasonable time. Why not NIA?

  • Deployed Sunday March 5th and decay hasn't even begun. This is in the only small town near me that will yield more than 100 fields. There is a little local opposition but not enough to clear the place. Currently treating myself to one daily hack as there's little else to do

    My impression.

Portals with a large number of links have less frequent XM-decay.

Some portals have no links that decay periodically for 6 days. A portal on the verge of dying. If you concentrate your links on such portals, the decay tends to stop after that.I have seen such trends in several portals.

I think NIANTIC intentionally changed the specifications.

I have witnessed no such correlation myself.

Portals in rural areas with limited or no gameplay decay less frequently or won't decay at all - no matter if links or not.

Negative. I captured a portal 2+ weeks ago when clearing out some red. The portal was not red, it was grey, a unique capture. I held the key because I liked the portal name. I know when it should decay. The portal has a single L7 resonator on it. It's never decayed. I've watched it when it should decay, and it simply doesn't. It's random. Some stuff decays, some doesn't. Sometimes my work portal will decay 5% instead of 15%. When that happens, only the higher level resos decay a wee bit.

Many agents depend on regular decay to play. Without it, their area doesn't become playable.

I wonder if this decay issue will become like the lagg issue and forever persist after multiple speculative fixes, that never work?

I know it feels to me like the decay is slower on portals with lots of links, but I think that’s mostly because those are the ones I am watching most as I want them to drop so that I can go out and rebuild them.

It's so erratic now that I think you would need a very large sample size of portals with different numbers of links to establish any such correlation. I’ve thought about doing that but gave up when I realized how tedious that would be.

  • Based on a fairly large number of samples, I say that there is no such correlation. It is not related to the activity, either, like portals on the same area might differ. It seems completely random to me.

I mentioned this in the General thread but it may be of benefit here. There was an announcement regarding variable portal decay under fields. Here is the post.

It obviously did not end in December and is more noticeable now than it was in the past. Also I flipped a portal under my field so I could watch it and it was also affected. But I only have that one enemy portal experience.

In the first few days I thought about that, too, but there doesn't seem to be any connection between the different decay times and whether the portal is under the field or not.

    Edit:

I've built about 40-40 portals in two parks several times, one of them mostly under a field, another is not. Late decaying portal ratio was similar in both places.

  • MJ78MJ78 ✭✭✭

When you also find that - in some cases - portals under fields have not decayed at all, then this issue has nothing to do with the anomaly in 2022.

Everything was OK until around the time when Quantum capsules were removed from the game.

  • DrHydrosaurDrHydrosaur ✭✭✭✭

@NianticBlue it has been more than a month since you acknowledged this and nothing has changed. It’s pretty clear now that this has been affecting essentially all portals.

I don’t understand how portal decay could be close to perfect globally for 9 years and then suddenly fall apart globally.

Is this just a case of “We don’t care, we think only a few players track portal decay this closely. We made a change to save server load on this money losing game and this is the effect. Live with it and be glad we aren’t abandoning the game completely.”

My pet theory on what happened:

To reduce server load Niantic got rid of game features that required it to continuously check millions of game features (QCs, but also portal decays). QCs were removed entirely but portal decay became randomized to something like (as an example):

    • There are 1440 minutes in a day so every minute, randomly select 1/1440 of all game portals.
    • If a selected portal has not decayed in the past 12 hours, decay the portal 15%

Maybe it’s not every minute and maybe there’s a different way to make 2 decays in 24 hours less common than 0 decays, but such a routine would greatly reduce server load and still approximate “normal” decay behaviour well enough for most agents not to notice and/or care.

I am more or less convinced now that this is intended long term behaviour. The new normal.

Hopefully I will be proven wrong soon.
