Haven't we already done this? I seem to remember making 200 links to get a Peace medal, recharging to get a Solstice medal*, scanning linking and capturing to get an EOS medal...
* Though really this medal was just a side-effect of half an hour's daily recharge
uh, stop! Let me explain to you with a specific example why this is a bad idea.
Once upon a time in this city, which is very dear to me, there were many players, people played, held events, traveled around the villages, got together. And now it's empty, there are key portals and that's it. People became uninterested in playing a year ago or more. My portal that I captured more than 2 years ago is still green! No one has repainted it in all this time! This is not New York, not Tokyo, this is a small city in the very center of Europe. And there were a lot of such cities where agents used to be. Thousands! You come to the city and there you immediately come to a meeting of 5 people, we sit together, drink beer, exchange keys, talk about interesting adventures.
It was ingress.
Smurfs were everywhere! Here, there, wherever you go, there is a blue portal everywhere, the rivals were insidious and cunning. There was a battle, it was interesting to invite a new player. Recruitment was constantly conducted. And now? Now there, in such towns, ingress has died. You will arrive there and you can capture at least 200,000 thousand portals and no one will resist you! Is it ingress???
No, this is not ingress.
I started a conversation with one recruit that this ingress is a cool game, and he answered, where are the rivals? How to play a player without rivals? No way. Absolutely.
What's the point of having combat beacons if there's no one to fight? Certainly none.
Again, when compared with raids in Pokemon Go, the trainer could get something that he did not have before. Something unique. And we get something wrong, a person spends money, buys a fraker with a mini battle for the portal and receives as a reward those items that he could get absolutely free from the nearest portal.
Now I have a question, why do I need this beacon if there is not a single smurf around? This paid item reminds me of a traffic light that for some reason was hung in the forest, where there are no pedestrians, no cars, no roads at all. But yes, the lights are on, the colors switch, and the traffic lights work as they should.
And now let's talk about daily tasks, in the style of hack * portals or destroy * resonators so that someone can do something in the story. Tell me how 10 destroyed resonators in a remote village can help in some kind of research ??? Logic is at rest in this case. Imagine that such tasks will be nothing more than short-term entertainment for most triangle drawing enthusiasts. Like drones. I know many agents but I don't know anyone who actively uses drones. With this ****** will be the same. Daily missions will also be out of the main concept of capturing fields as well as drones, combat beacons and missions. Yes, this is a nice addition, but if there is no opponent around, then why is it needed?
Therefore, in such cities, a rival is needed! A computer-controlled rival, and we also need regular micro-events, such as shards, or something that would force agents to communicate between cities.
@Pangarban I hear what you're saying, but I think I was unclear. I was making the case that those games are fundamentally purposeless and need checklists in order to keep players active. There isn't a day in the last nine years that I haven't opened Ingress and played actively, no checklist required. The difference is that Ingress has a competitive purpose as a fundamental element of the game.
This is your choice however, we all have days when we are too busy to meaningfully engage with the game board.
A lot of players are just happy pottering around, get a kick if they manage to make a field, bump a few portals maybe.
Then there's varying degrees of hardcore. (The "Oh no, so and so is going to make a big a triangle, rush out from the office, drive 10km and put a blocker in). These people are the minority of players, (though ideally this would be all players :)
Some daily tasks that give a small reward would be OK, it should not matter if you complete it or not. Any bonus should not imbalance gameplay.
I would guess after both anomalies have ended so next year. Probably some big plans lets say Enl wins both it could be some new mechanics and lore so a fresh reboot of everything would make sense after 10 years.
Considering it tok quite a while for the feature to be implemented in their other games, which have more devs working on them.
I'd expect sometime mid to late 2023 due to how complicated it is to implement and the limited number of Ingress devs. Though maybe Ofer2 may show off kore of his magic, and it will come earlier
The machina thing looks so cool! It could be like reverse plague inc event during the anomaly where either the whole playbox is getting infected and both factions have to xmp it down or it starts infecting on 2 sides of the play box and whichever faction gets rid of it and so on!
I should perhaps just ignore that pathetic whinge of yours, but please don't go questioning my original worry.
I think the whole geoblocking was sloppily executed. Now we have some Russians still able to play in Russia, some Finnish portals unplayable, some permanent anchor portals for both factions and now possible troubles with red faction portals.
So yes, I'd like to know if Niantic has thought about that when introducing this PvE. You go find or create your own more suitable discussion about strategic geoblocked portals.
Maybe you're one of the rare RESFinland players that are not shamelessly enjoying the unfair advantage, but you and I both know majority of your faction does. Otherwise we would have had both factions running for fair game policy of the geoblocked portals and for the full disabling of them.
Red links can cross blue(maybe green too). Won't that red links create blockers for other links? Also if red portals will be created in forgotten or forbidden unclaimed portals - that's not the best idea. Maybe that portals were unclaimed for some reason.

That may not be the case for all players however. Some days if I am busy, I’ll just hack for my Sojourner/Epoch streak in the morning and that’s it.
I don’t drive, and often have no other actions to do in my local area after making fields and links etc. on previous days.

By the way, when are they planning to introduce PvE mechanics? Will they be by the end of the year?

If PvE means a red faction, it's already starting to happen. I've seen 4 red portals on the map so far. They are quite spread out though.
The machina thing looks so cool! It could be like reverse plague inc event during the anomaly where either the whole playbox is getting infected and both factions have to xmp it down or it starts infecting on 2 sides of the play box and whichever faction gets rid of it and so on!
We have at least a dozen in Perth, Western Australia. Popped up in remote areas as well.
I hope these are self limiting because driving 1000km+ aint happening.
Agents: Linking under fields will hurt large OPS...
Niantic: Hold my beer...
Yes, apparently PvE is much further along in development than I initially thought.
Not seen any Red Faction portals in New Zealand yet
Got them here. A cluster formed and they are actually linked up with some of the links crossing each other.
It’s pretty annoying that the these portals do not stand out in Intel map as distinct from a neutral portal until they are linked up.
Might not be a big deal as long as they don’t suddenly throw long blockers, and I’m a bit disturbed that the links can cross each other.
These red faction portals are also spreading out in Russia and Belarus where portals exist but playing is geoblocked.
I really hope that Niantic has thought about this issue...
You're only concerned about it because currently RESFinland has an untouchable advantage with that one particular portal in Kostomuksha, Russia.
I really really hope the first few Machina portals will crosslink with the portal and we can finally get rid of your cheatportal.
I should perhaps just ignore that pathetic whinge of yours, but please don't go questioning my original worry.

Best part about red faction? watching it grow in areas where no one can touch them. closed amusement parks, zoos, other attractions.
Or maybe watching it cross it's own links.
The cross its own links has already happened. Fortunately they are l2 weeds. Player base in my box has been pretty good about dealing with the weeds.
... Russia.
... and Belarus.
I thought they are Red

Red links don't do link checking when making outgoing links so they can cross red, green and blue links, however red links block green and blue.
Maybe that portals were unclaimed for some reason.
Most cities have 70-80% unclamed portals. Most portals are unclaimed because they far outweigh the playerbase.
I love the idea. Keep it growing haha
I agree 💯
