How is campfire useful to anyone?

I clicked that little button that says campfire, and it just took me to a big empty map. Can someone explain how this is useful to anyone?

Portal scanning has been in the game for near two years now, right? How useful is that? Niantic has been introducing features that speak to investors more than it speaks to people playing the game. Campfire is a perfect example of this and something that looks amazing in a powerpoint presentation at some kickoff event, but in reality, hardly used.

    It has chat!

It's good for generating posts of people asking how to get an invite.

In reality: When it was first introduced, it seemed like it could have had a purpose. Being able to chat with people outside of game comms, without having to go to a different platform.

But then they decided to make the outside app, shut down existing Campfire groups, and put the unusable options to message people in Campfire while in game. Now it just feels like yet another dead-end Niantic idea that was probably a few years too late after Discord and Slack.

If you're a PoGo player, it apparently has some more use there, but I'm not in that target audience and can't speak to its functionality.

Everything of portal scanning will be shown in VPS and the Wayfarer app.

Who cares if it's in other apps.

When will it be in the scanner?

It’s designed a lot more for Pokémon GO than anything else.

Who really knows but it seems having the scanning technology in a separate app for right now doesn't divert any Ingress development.

Not really. It's just Brian is testing the Campfire usage for Ingress.

  • If nothing else it gives a private way to contact a player without knowing anything other than their IGN. That's useful.

Its actually a liability tbh because even if a particularly toxic agent is regularly COMM banned from Ingress for years of continuous, repeated, unrelenting, unrepentant harassment and stalking, they can still message other agents thru Campfire. Until that loophole is fixed, the negatives 100% outweigh any unknown positives.

the campfire chat is maybe usefull "as step in between" to contact lonewolf players discretely if they dont want to install telegram/or wanna be involved in TG groups.

This feature would have been great years ago when there were more players and new players coming onboard all the time. The ability to reach out to a new player without having to ask them to install a chat app would have been nice. But now there just aren't any players left and very rarely is there ever a new player. So for ingress I don't think this will make any impact. Ingress players always test out features so they can be used in other games. That's what this was all about. This wasn't for Ingress.

It should be useful if there's no comm/fac/xfac chat. Or with some extra features. For example i haven't heard cases of campfire usage, only one time someone tried to troll me(thats why mine campfire is disabled). So yes i will be a critic because ingame part looks like webview "quick app" and haven't played with standalone app.

It gives the users on this forum something to make a thread, that's all.
