As the world adjusts to a new normal, we have been evaluating the impact of the temporary changes we made to Ingress in 2020 on everyday gameplay today, and have listened to Agents’ requests and feedback via a variety of avenues.
The following temporary change will return to its original value, effective starting Friday, 30 September:
- Portal cooldown between hacks will be reverted to its original value of 300 seconds on neutral Portals and Portals aligned to the opposite Faction, up from 90 seconds
- Portal cooldown between hacks will be 180 seconds on Portals aligned to the Agents’ Faction, up from 90 seconds
The following temporary changes have been made permanent:
- Agents can submit 180 missions.
- Dronenet enables Agents to hack a Portal from anywhere and counts towards Sojourner.
- L10 Agents can review Wayspots with Wayfarer.
- L8 Agents on ARCore-supported devices can submit Portal Scans.
- AP bonus for Capturing a Portal is increased from 500 AP to 675 AP.
This will be the last reversals of temporary game changes added since early 2020.
As always, we encourage players to follow local health and safety guidelines (such as wearing masks and keeping at least six feet of distance from other people).

I think I speak for the majority of people when I say upping the cooldown of portals is one of the worst decisions Niantic has made in a long, long time.
The number of active players keep falling, and they will continue to fall faster with the change in portal cooldown. I have had doubts that Niantic makes decision at the toss of a dice and not actually using logic, this decision proves it. Amazing job! /s 😑
I really hoped the Cooldown would stay as it was.
The bonuses we have kept are very little in comparison to the bonuses kept in the other main title.
Thank you for bringing the old rules back.
Keep the 90sec CD !!
This announcement is as painful as the Red Wedding. Good luck everybody.
The change in the cooldown makes this game less fun and far less compelling. I play this game to be active and not to stand around for 5 minutes at a time.
It will definitely affect my activity in game and greatly diminish fielding efforts.
Keep 90 seconds cooldown! What's the point of making the game slower?! What's the point of making agents needlessly spend more time farming.
And get rid of neutral/opposite faction cooldown difference too! It's a clever idea but it's unnecessary. It's just yet another arbitrary rule that new players have to learn on top of everything else that's obtuse about ingress.
MAKE 90SEC COOLDOWN PERMANENT FOR ALL PORTALS.
Setting cool down back to something that was "normal" 2.5 years ago is just another typical NIA BS decision. Always trying to reduce the player base.
Yet again, Niantic doesn't listen. 🖕
or at least 90sec for faction portal 180 for enemy / neutral.
but 3 min base CD is just boring and brings absolutely nothing
You might as well shut down the game for the big year 10 anniversary. I knew common sense was not common, didn't think it was this bad. 🤬
For a game with a motto of "it's time to move" it seems stupid that Niantic wants us to sit for up to 5 minutes for a second hack depending on if the portal is "the right color" when you hack it.
Side note, an unintended consequence of this change will mean that xf events might turn into a portal blood bath due to there being multiple timers between portals.
Yeah, I’m sure they read all our concerns…
We knew it was coming, because they show time and again they don’t care about their player base. It’s like they want us to stop playing so they can pull the plug :D
Good luck with the hacking time increase bet it will see a drop off in game activity .
May that is what you want to **** the game off well done
I'll just use a heatsink to increase cool down times. I'm not sure many people will be excited for this change but the game has been on easy mode for a few years now. Getting back to the original mechanics will make the game boring but the few players that are left will probably still play. This certainly doesn't encourage gameplay.
**** game off
Well, that's me done, I've been arguing for months that reverting (or making the hack timer slower in general) would end the game for me, well, they've done it against the majority of the player bases wish. Cancelling my subscription now, was fun for a coupe of years
I don't like the hack time increase, slows the game down too much
what is the connection between cooldown and pandemic? Drone was created because of pandemic, but changes with cooldown should stay permanent.
Waiting around is dumb, really is. Cool down time changes don't make the game challenging, don't make linking more difficult, don't make fielding more difficult, don't make scanning portal more difficult, they just make things drag and will waste people valuable time just to wait to hack another time.
ingress - it's time to mo.. oh wait, time to wait at portals again
and no no no, none, you have not listened to Agents’ requests and feedback via a variety of avenues.
at least, you didn't even try to fix the ergonomic of action, fix the delay,
The change is awful. The rollbacks of the other two changes were unwelcome but understandable given more people should play again but this change back is just annoying for portals with a large distance to nearby portals. The faction dependency is even worse, many areas are already one sided and there is already a penalty for hacking opposite portals, no need to add yet another one!
Was there a difference in cooldown for friendly vs. neutral/enemy portals before the pandemic changes? I think that's a pretty neat addition.
Waiting and doing nothing, something I totally accept in a game that encourages going outside for play. The 5 minutes is en was a LONG time between hacks.
Also, the difference on the alignment of portals. Why? You know there is still some opsec in this game right? stealth keyfarming, and areas where the only way to descently farm is flipfarming to avoid your farm from being destroyed.
What this change lacks is an explanation.
Why? What is the objective of this?
Maybe there is a really good reason: if so - what is it?
Do we need our Ingress community leaders (whoever they are, show of hands please?) to write a similar letter to this one that let the Pokémon GO players keep some of their bonuses?
At least we can use all those types of MHs, HS, and resos in our inventories to make room for other items. When life gives you lemons, make some lemonade...
the absolute worst decision - ever. Keep the current cooldown period - we need movement, not standstill
If I need extra keys, I'm going to wait. Many times I'm in my car (need AC or heat, it's raining.) So now I'm going to be idling my car waiting for 5 minutes to pass. Brilliant.
