NFT's and Ingress
Apparently Niantic now has a head of Web3:
I just want to let Niantic know in advance that the gaming community hate NFT's/crypto in games and introducing them to Ingress or any other game will destroy any sort of goodwill the community had left.

Yes, it's coming.
And Niantic will shove it into their games ignoring player's feedback.
Greed rules it all.
trade jpgs ? please no
So we lost the Wayfarer product manager, who’s responsible for helping us “map the world” and adding new Portals etc. (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/danbilee_geospatial-gis-geomatics-activity-6948402086434799616-P3to) and got a guy who is in to NFTs?
No F***ing Thanks.
The example Henke gave at the Lightship 2022 conference was: You'd be invited to do some things in game (I heard it as a mission), and then you'd be rewarded with an NFT one-time-use coupon. The example they gave was (something like) a couple of those single-serve iced teas from a supermarket. Niantic would set up deals with vendors (who would probably pay Niantic for the advertising).
I'd probably end up collecting the NFTs because they'd probably be things I don't need, lol, like a free shot of cream at Starbucks. Then, if I came across someone who would use it, I'd drop it to them. I'm fine with all that - as long as they don't take space in my inventory limit.
Allow me to introduce you to these thing called bio-cards and badges...?
A finite number of physical items, which are paired to a digital code, which people have bought in bulk and then resold on Ebay or other methods for a profit. Supply is limited and has built-in destruction of supply by redeeming the code, thereby increasing the value of the investment. Small releases of new biocards are generated and then sold in kits as a way to maintain checks and balance against inflation of the cards prices on ebay. Demand is dictated by however many agents join the game and get hooked/converted to purchases of said cards.
Remind me how this isn't similar to NFTs at all?
Bio-cards are tangible items. In-game badges don't require the blockchain.
No, they only require a set of computing resources (effort) to continue existing.
Oh wait, that's exactly like blockchain, except it's not distributed across a P2P network.
Utilizing NFTs in the gaming world can be risky as well. Can't NFTs be used in money laundering and other criminal activities?
https://www.makeuseof.com/how-nfts-used-wash-trading-money-laundering/
I'll take a wild guess and assume the compute power is nowhere near what's required for blockchain.
Ingress had NFTs long before the term became popular.
I see no issues with them
Not good for the environment.
Once laws regulating NFTs get approved, NFTs are going to be magnets for authorities like the FBI and IRS. I guess Niantic likes that scenario.
Kinda reminds me of garfield go,,
A weird wonderful geo-location game that gave real world prizes....
With an Ingress meetup of agents and Niantics Web3 devision coming up, I once again want to request a statement by the Ingress team regarding their stance on incorporating any Web3 technology into the game, like Blockchain and NFTs, or more specifically, a promise that it'll never even go near Ingress.
Any blockchain or nft garbage in ingress will without a hesitation get me to cancel my core subscription and me go unfiltered rage blame you for ruining our beloved game. No. F off with that garbage in games. Stop killing our planet with this stuff
NFTs?
More like, "No Farkin' Thanks".
NFT's will ruin Ingress in 1 of these 2 ways:
Long story short: Bad idea.
Prime had me at the edge of quitting. But with NFTs, Crypto, web3 or whatever you wanna call those I am out. No coming back. I already said that it is probably Niantics plan to drive Ingress against the wall back in 2019 but I did not expect them to go this route.
Fuck NFTs
Fuck Crypto
Fuck Web3
Any digital exchangable garbage like cyptos, bitcoins, nfts etc will make me reconsider as i do not want anything to do with them as they are all insecure
However i am ok with a physical collectible card tieing it in as its easier to tell if theyee genunie etc without a physical tie in, how would we know its not a SCAM....
I rarely post on the community but I've been playing off and on since the early days. I learned to live with Prime. I've been a core subscriber since it launched and I've bought some cosmetic badges. I roped my husband into joining Core to support the game even though the extent of his interest in the game is "I'll come to local first Saturdays with you".
If NFTs come to Ingress we'll both be canceling.
Any blockchain or NFT garbage in Ingress will without a hesitation get me to cancel my Core subscription and me go unfiltered rage blame you for ruining our beloved game. No.

There needs to be an in detail explanation how this sort of monetization, and more specifically the opting out if using this feature, will impact normal gameplay. What is in it for us. An NFT? From what I've seen, these are mass produced digital art sort of things. Everyone can have one and so the value is zero. And if the value is zero who is buying them and at what price? Getting 13 year olds into spending their real world money on something that has no benefit sounds like a nice money making scam to me.
For many it seems, the idea of monetizing gameplay is very much against what is wanted.
As players of Ingress, we provided you with significant amounts of real world data. Sure sometimes it's a funny looking waste bin in a child's park, but it is more often a statue, a plaque if a famous person or event, something that is actually in fact a point of interest. And we give you the location and photos and now 3d scans so you incorporate that into new games ... Oh but you've tried new games haven't you ... How many are still going.
The introduction of web3 tech would seem to be made by the same buzz word guzzling marketing people who never actually play the games ... Beneath them.
If you want ingress to survive, NFTs and the associated micropayments that come with that is very very much not going to help.
Those with core subscription already support your business. If it isn't enough, then talk to us properly. Sell shares in Niantic. Give up some control and let others with a real passion and real money invest and provide some direction.
Because from what we have seen in the last years with Ingress and some of the business decisions made by Niantic it would seem you are in need of both.
Ingress and Pokémon Go work. They work well. The data collected from these games of real world elements are certainly very very licensable to third party developers. You want to make money, sell things other people will want to pay for. And this doesn't necessarily mean things the general public will see directly.
Woo huu. Well said. But nobody here can stop a company chasing the hype. The more unsatisfied you and me are about introducing NFTs to Niantic games, the more likely Niantic would do it.
I'm open to exploring the web3 space with Chikai and our SpotX team. I worked with Chikai back at Niantic Labs@Google, and I like the way he and the SpotX team are being thoughtful about how they approach our Ingress community. They're fellow Niantics, I trust that they're gathering community feedback and experimenting with the tech in a responsible way, and I'm supportive.
My priorities are growing our player base and also improving our financials. I'm looking forward to Ingress Year 10 in Nov, and thinking about how we continue the game onward beyond 10 years of Ingress. Anomalies or live events need to be core to that, and we're building on what we learned from Superposition Munich. Niantic is actively exploring web3, and I see Ingress helping Chikai and SpotX understand what our community is about, as they continue their work.
To that end, our SpotX team is hosting a Cross-Faction Meetup to meet with Ingress players in Miami, FL where the SpotX team is located. They've worked in web3 for years, and I know they appreciate your feedback. They're on reddit and in the forum, and have read the comments here.
If you're in Miami and want to join their meetup, it's open to any Ingress player, and the first round is on them. Wed, Aug 24 at RedBar Brickell at 6:30-8:30pm: https://lu.ma/ingressmia. I'm going to try and be there; our SpotX team might benefit from having someone from Ingress there to help answer any Ingress-specific questions or feedback.
If Niantic is looking for financial investment then for the time being, the traditional financial tools should be used. The entire DeFi/NFT world, for financial investment, is too hit or miss ... With many many misses.
In terms of expanding Niantic games/platforms, then demonstrating some serious commitment to fixing some of the truly terrible UX with the existing games ( Ingress's key management is my just appallingly poor and the new "Please buy me" items in the carousel just stinks of desperation ).
Chasing the next big thing which the world has already demonstrated isn't and won't be for many decades isn't the way to go.
Unless .. the future business model is one of continual micropayments and that clearly isn't a good fit for Ingress (at least).
Priority should be fixing the lag though?
more kinetics maybe to buy ? but since many have problems with the single one we have perhaps its not possible getting more if they keep getting stuck and not counting distance for some reason.
I don’t see how (possibly) putting NFTs into Ingress accomplishes either of those.
As for new players, there’s got to be tons of level 1 Ingress accounts who are Pokémon GO players who started just to see the map, so it’s worth getting something together to see if you can push them to play and not just use the map for more PokéStops.
Financially, I like CORE but some single/triple use KCaps would be great. It’s always nice when they come in Pokémon GO for completing research.
I also think the research style thing would be great and it fits Ingress’ style a lot more.
Improving these financials? Should we look forward to monetizing linking next, or maybe kcap duplication rates?

That’s Niantic as a whole, including the money printing game, which I assume they have to pay a bunch for the IP too.
Ingress has probably been bleeding money for a while.
