What's the story behind an In Game Name?

in General
One of the things I always ask people in person is for them tell me about their game name. Why did they choose it? What does it mean? It's a fun way to connect to someone who I've never met.
Mine is combination of names. I chose to keep my maiden name, but made a combination name for fun when I got married. However, it's sort of taken on a new meaning with ingress, as I drive a van (and some people think my first name is Jeffery, which is cute).
So tell me about yours. I'm keen to read about it.

Mine means lord of the night in hungarian. But its contracted. Made this name because I play only at night
At the time I started, I was a big MLP:FiM fan (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Please, do not make fun of me for that.) I liked the character Applejack a lot, and she is the bearer of the Element of Honesty.
So, because character limits were a thing at the time of my signing up, HonestEl it was. HonestElemental was what I was going for, but it didn't fit.
I'm an operating system.
OK, so, I was on a chatline of a few people back around the turn of the millenium where we actually used our real names. I was a UNIX Admin at the time as well, so at some point a friend of mine jumped online, saw me, and typed out, "GWENIX!!! I NEED UNIX HELP!!!"
I've used "gwenix" ever since.
That blue bugger stole @zen so i had to cobble another N on the end and quite frankly... its better this way.
i chose this name as a constant clarion call to be awake to the moment. I see it over and over... in case i forget.
A blueberry got to the name i wanted first so i had to haphazardly cobble another feather into the headdress
i chose this name as a constant clarion call to be awake to the moment. I see it over and over... in case i forget.
Ween
I've had this name for over 10 years. War = Toki Wartooth from Metalocalypse, Diamond = King Diamond. I like metal.
ArgentKitsune quite literary means Silver Fox. First word is French for sliver and second part is the English version of the Japanese word for fox. I truthfully at the time was kinda inspired by the show teen wolf XD what can I say wanted the name silver fox but didn't want it "too" obvious lol
Longtime character name that I have used in lots of forums for games that i have a passion for. Originated as a D&D character name from a campaign i played while in high school. It was a 2nd edition game, and that's as far as I'm telling on myself, how "young" I still am ;)
Long time user name that I've used all over. I think the 1st time I used it was back when I was playing MUDs. Kept it since
Utter laziness. I would pick something witty and clever, but then it wouldn't match my license plate.
Battle.net .... No seriously.
I've used this name since every name I had used to date was already taken on battle.net in the Diablo II era. Since then, this has been me because it's usually (almost always) available.
I'm boring.
I was dumb, so naturally I used my last name. An Enlighten agent suggested I change my agent name to something else. So I submitted a request than few weeks later I got to change me name. My mentor would reply with the emote banana and hammer anytime he smashed green portals, so took that but added the and made it all caps because caps lock is cruise control.
I found it on a packet of garden seeds, and liked the sound of it.
I bet you're all wishing you were this badass, now, aren't you?
is people.
Played a MMORPG for the first time, didn't feel like my first person **** name (IcIshoot) would fit.
Sat there at the character naming screen trying to come up with a name for a long time. Bottom of screen were two buttons: "default" and "confirm".
Started messing around with dividing the words into pieces and rearranging them until I found one I like:
The F and U from default, the R from confirm, DE from default and CON from confirm...
Furdecon.
My first name is Ian, and as Aussie-teenage boys like rhyming names, I got saddled with one of the few works that rhymes with that, Korean.
My brother then became the Korean brother, and as I'm older than him my name eventually became Elder Korean. Even though I wasn't old or Korean.
It's sort of stuck, and happily is always available 😊
My goes back to the days of vanilla World of Warcraft circa 2004. Needed a cool name for my warlock character. Crimson being associated with blood as it’s a deep red, and Grimoire being a book of spells used to summon demons. So the blood bathed book of dark summoning is me! CrimsonGrimoire.
Where are my fellow wow addicts?
I really wish I could reply directly to these, but know I am enjoying reading them. Have had a couple good laughs. Thank you!
My agent name means "Fate" or "Destiny" in Urdu/Arabic. I have even chosen the "destiny" glyph as my in-game agent avatar 😋
My in game name came from a game called "DOFUS" (MMORPG) I knew everything about the game, and I was one of the oldest players. Then they started to call me "Ancestro". And the "cl" is due to my country Chile. :)
Mine comes from a series of books by Melanie Rawn - The Dragon Prince. Absolutely love those books. Azhrei and Azhreia are the old-langugae names for Dragon Prince and Dragon Princess.
My former account IGN was Skavenlady. Started when I joined the Games Workshop forums and played the Skaven army in Warhammer Fantasy. Used that nic for years since
Fans of writer Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern series of books will have already guessed where it came from, but for those of you who haven't yet read the series, Weyr's are the home of a group of dragons, their riders and extended family. The Weyrleader is the military head of the Weyr who is chosen by virtue of the dragon he rides winning the Queen dragons mating flight. Highly recommend the series to any scifi/fantasy fans. 🐲
Forget you Jane I'm moving out (the polite version) with the suffix being the province I lived in and also my number plate.
Borrowed the name from a movie character, I can recommend watching The Princess Bride if you have not seen it before. Family friendly and one of my favourite movies. Didn't want to use one of the more obvious names to use, and it lets people use one of the more memorable lines from the movie on me. I also quite like the anti-hero aspect.
ModularModular is my business name, I make project bags for knitters and they're kinda modular so I went with two modulars cause I like the sound of it. And I couldn't think of anything better when I started playing Ingress and wanted something gender-neutral, so I decided to use it. In hindsight I shouldn't have and came up with something else for Ingress, but I've enjoyed all the ModMod deploys ModMod jokes over the years so whatever! It's kinda become who I am and it's cool
A song I happened to be listening to when i chose my codename
Mix of old nicknames. Hyde, Spartacus and polish surname suffix.
I can't really remember why I picked this, but I've been using it for nearly 20 years.
Long story cut short. Back in 1995, Had to choose a name for a LARP character, so picked a Welsh town name (once the centre of industry, but now a fading shadow of it's former glory...) and respelt it to look more Welsh. Realised people in the wider world thought I'd misspelt 'Murder', so changed it to myrthrr (for the Achaea MMORPG), because that's kindof how it sounds. Like Mirth, only more so :D
