[Discussion] Update to Ingress Minimum Requirements

in General
Starting with the release of Ingress 2.95 (tentatively scheduled for mid-July), the OS versions of Ingress will be increasing.
With the release of Ingress 2.95, the minimum OS versions will be as follows:
- Android 8+
- iOS 14+
Note about OS betas: Niantic apps may not function on devices running beta versions of iOS or Android.

I thought this would be happening as Pokémon GO also announced an update to compatible devices/OS recently.
Too bad none of this will fix the lag issues we've been experiencing for some time....

The next update obviously then shows that they skipped 2.93 and 2.94
Wow.
Have high expectations
Did they add something new to the game?
How about arm7? I know some devices built on *64 cpu's but due to 3gb ram they are with *32 android. Will arm7 still remain supported?
And i'd like to know why minimal versions are changed, what will it give for user? Less apk size?Or less lags/freezes?
Why aren't you up to date on your OS at this point?

It's interesting to know how many players will have to buy a new device.
It's not mid-July yet though.
No particular problems.
However, I was surprised to see that Ingress announced that it would stop supporting Android 7, whereas the Pokémon GO team recently announced that it would stop supporting Android 6 starting with the next version.
Niantic fixed the location of portals in six major cities this spring and announced VPS at the recent summit, so I'm wondering if this major version upgrade is closely related to that.
They didn't skip versions - they're warning ahead of time
Would this 2.95 finally explain what this empty space in the menu is going to be used for?
Nothing. They like white space (just look at comms).
Isn't the menu on android the same? Huge white space at the top?
I believe they are getting rid of these android versions because versions from 5 to 7 are the ones that support spoofing methods by downgrading Google play services to a pre 2018 version.
Hopefully this ends spoofing for once and all, or at least until someone finds another way, but I hope that doesnt happen soon.
You mean they didn't skip versions yet. Going on almost 2 months since a client release.
Definetively not. There's still and better ways to spoof up to Android 10 (maybe 11 and 12 too?), I don't think that's the reason.
Android 8 is quite old actually, I suppose Niantic doesn't see any need to work on keeping the game compatible for that version. The same are they doing as for iOS as stated before.
Future expansion?
I'm curious about those ways 🤔
old android is 4.4 not 8.
Android 8 came out august 2017. Support has ended october 2021. So yeah it's old...
Niantic is a tech company, they have no reasons to support android versions from 2017 or older....
"no reasons"? What about the players whose phones can't be upgraded to Android 8, who can now no longer play?
Supporting older releases shouldn't be a problem for Niantic, unless there are new game features which specifically require a newer version of Android. (And having looked at the features of Android 8 compared to Android 7, I doubt that this would be the case)
At best, Niantic will make a small saving on their QA testing at the cost of however many players are forced to quit the game.
By the way official page should be corrected IMO.
I am not sure that there is a device running Android 8 with 512 RAM with proper GPU onboard - and pretty sure that Ingress won't run on such low RAM simply because Android 8 with gApps will use more xD. At least 1.5 GB,IMO. It will be slideshow :)))
And how it will work on arm6 (even not talking that can't remember arm6 with opengl3 support) - there are arm7/arm8 libs only in app, maybe x86/x86-64 can work with arm7 libs (haven't phone to test, but have a doubt).
