EOS Imprint Challenge Afterthoughts
Firstly, the badge design is amazing, as much as I liked the "Character" Challenge badge designs (eg. C Sans, Optima, Courier etc) it's nice to return to the older style of badges, this one especially which I think is the best design so far, EXO5 Controller being my number 2. I hope this design style continues.
Secondly, I liked how there was multiple ways to achieve the badge, and while I don't think this should be the case for every challenge (I think encouraging players to do things that might be outside their regular play style), I love the concept.

I like the badge, but I think the silver looks the best, I was tempted to stay silver, but I couldnt bare people looking at my account and thinking, "oh, only silver!"😅
I got the gold through mostly scanning, which I hate, but I thought it would be a good excuse to get the scout badges, in which I achieved silver for scout and bronze for controller... and although I agree with your sentiments about more classic looking badges... scout controller is definitely the coolest looking badge.
Through this event I also discovered the most efficient way of scanning fast and successfully. Essentially, at night, under a streetlight, filming the ground like a lawn mower!😅 I did get a couple shots of the portal too, dont worry SA, not that you'll read this.
Most of my friends got gold through capture and fielding, so I agree it's good to have multiple routes. But they definitely worked harder than me. I basically got drunk and swayed my phone around.
Oh, and upload in WiFi. I burned through 3gbs in 24 hours before I noticed that!😅
I wish people would say what they disagree with lol. Otherwise it feels like a troll button to be ignored 😅
I enjoyed the event and liked the way you could choose multiple ways to get points which made me think a lot about the most efficient ways to get points (other than scanning).
My main complaint is the 50k MU minimum threshold was too high for most of the world. It doesn’t seem right to me that the 1.4 million MU I captured during the event qualified for zero event points because my largest fields “only” covered about 10k MU. Meanwhile 4 hours of local scanning got me well over 5000 points.
I like having multiple routes to a badge. This one was pretty easy for me, and I'm currently at about 9500 points. I did it 100% with glyphing and captures.
I play the events, so at the announcement of this I soon worked out the easiest path to victory was scanning portals. That said I gained the badge by normal play/scanning. Judging by my current point count I didn't need to scan as many as I did.
I personally didn't really enjoy it.
What I did enjoy was that it was a personal challenge to get gold. And gold I got primarily by scans, even when spending hours clearing links to ready up a EOS Points gaining engine. Which at the end was pointless as I got gold before needing that engine.
Much the same has been vocalised in our community.
The devs missed the fact that we have not seen a single in game use for scans since it was introduced more than 2 years ago.
One player in our group suggests that, if a player uploaded 8 scans of a portal, they should have the option to add a 2nd Level 8 Resonator to the portal. Then they might be interested.
Some do not even care for the Battle Beacons that pop up at the start of the Septicycle, because there is tally on the septicycle scoreboard for it.
And even if they did do that, there is no reward to try and win Battle Beacons.
The event was essentially a data gathering exercise for the Niantic Lightship VPS, using free labour.
Only silver lining of anything is from when Brian Rose talked about a potential feature at the 2021 AWE AR conference.
As well as the announcement from John Hanke that this VPS we're funneling data into will be made available to developers in Q4 of 2022, with subtle hints that something will be coming to Ingress and/or Pokémon GO in Q3 with regards to this VPS.

i thought it was a fun badge to do especially if u dont want to scan, or are able to make +50k MU fields, nor want to use VRBB or ADA's to rethrow ur fields. I had to think of a strategy that is adapted to my situation.
I think niantic should have left out the scan option to earn points. Let the people be creative how to earn points, gameplaywise. Now people just make 500 scans of (1) portal(s) and thats it.🤷♀️ (i know they want more data for their lightship, but there are already 2 scan badges)
That's a lot of play time. I have limited time so bailed at bronze. No scans.
The event kind of feels like the thinking at Niantic was along these lines:
@SSSputnik To be fair, I have a built-in advantage for glyphing because of couch portals. I also live in a major metropolitan area so it's easy to find dense areas with lots of grey (or during the event low-level enemy portals) and get a lot of caps in a reasonably short time. I also picked up about 200 unique caps doing this, which is nice because double onyx won't pioneer itself.
I'm not in what I'd call a major metro area but we do have yuge clusters of portals. I'm almost at double points (16,000) from captures, glyphs and loads of spewing 1km+ long links.
But like @Hosette I did find a bunch of unique captures. Lots of new portals out there of suspect quality. But that's thankfully no longer an issue that the Ingress team has to worry about. Just freebie upcs for us! 😁
Haha jelly. Our Enl went into badge denial mode and didnt smash anything in cbd...
I think they set the point bar too high, especially for lower population areas. It is incredibly difficult to achieve 50K MU fields in my areas. I’d also like to see a longer time of play, so folks can make time within their schedules for the event. By the time I was able to put some time in, it was already too late to even achieve bronze. Ultimately, makes me not look forward to future events, as the bar will likely be set too high again.
@SSSputnik Here there would be no smashing required, just willingness to travel a bit. There are currently over 3000 neutral portals in the city of San Francisco. Berkeley and Oakland have about the same. San Jose has roughly 5000, and I'd be shocked if there weren't more than 20K grey portals in the whole SF bay area right now... and that's after people like me grabbed lots of easy caps.
Ingress can be such a very different game depending upon where one is located.
I captured some portals, glyphed like normal, threw some fields, made some links. Pretty easy badge really. But I did not scan. I still don't know what the purpose of it is. If they ever say why then maybe I'll scan a few portals.
My nickname for this was everyone over scanning lol
I'm sorry that I threw this text as a picture, I'm not a native English speaker, so I don't understand which word this forum algorithm swears at.
There has been a minor global issue for the past 2 years which is why we have had no anomalies.
My thoughts....
Zero scans, is what im happy to do Zero of it.
Plenty of options to persude which is nice
Would prefer more gameplay, rather than doing scans that doesnt affect gameplay other than being a COMMs nuisance.
My thoughts:
Where is lore?
Why does the NIA need so much scans from the portal network?
His argument about another badge is making me wonder why he continues to play this game, honestly.
I think the 50K MU was a lofty number, though it's how I earned all the points for my gold medal. I think a nice middle ground, but still requiring a ton of work would have been to honor the points for every 50K earned. So two 25K fields get you those points or 10 5K fields, etc.
I thought the event was nice. Made people work a bit for it. I'm sure Niantic will have some donuts and coffee to celebrate their great success in all the scans they acquired, though I'm curious what percentage is even usable.,..
It was clearly a event aimed to scanning, but they "masked" it with alternative methods of gaining points in order to not making it too obvious.
And I enjoyed it. The medal looks pretty cool and I needed a reason to make scans. On a bad side, sometimes the AR feature became too laggy and I was unable to make sucessful scans.
I’m thinking they should introduce platinum and onyx badges for these events. That way, they can set a low bar for casual players, or players in areas with few portals. And set the bar extremely high for those who want to put in the time to get an onyx badge. Overall would make more players happy to play the game and participate.
Depending on your area, there's a few badges that can be raced to Onyx to make the higher level requirements of 2 Black and 4 Platinum, though the specific badges differ depending on whether you're in a rural area or an urban area. Tiered events go to Gold to overcome the wide spread of Gold badges required to get to level 13.
Now that we have installed safeguards in the Portal Network, what have we kept it safe from?
Poke5 players!😅
I think niantic came out the huge winner here.
Lightship received likely hundreds of thousands of scans for the low low price of $0 (free agent labor).
They didn't even have to design a badge for it as they've had it on the shelf for months.
Too late for that. 😆
