They're not two different clients though. Ingress 2.x and Ingress 1.x which share the same store ID. There's no real reason to differentiate the fact that the client changed, now that it's been almost as many years since that change, than there were before the change.
Ingress Prime replaced Ingress's app store ID when it was updated in November 2018. That's when redacted, the old app, was moved to a completely separate app store ID.
For Niantic's sake, Ingress Prime is their update of Ingress. I think at this point using Ingress or Ingress Prime is ok.

In technical terms, a new copy of the 1.0 Ingress app was placed on a new ID. Redacted wasn't a term until that happened, so "redacted" was never on the original ID.
The code for redacted was at end of support with the app store forcing compatability on November 1st.
We're not going back to redacted. The story line has it that we closed it off for Nemesis to not access. If we do get to return to 1218, it's going to be with the current scanner.
Oh yeah, I don’t want to go back to the Redacted scanner but with all the multiverse stuff being prominent in films at the moment I thought they might want to capitalise on it somehow.

Never
It is how Niantic are differentiating the two different clients.

Yeah at what point do we just call it Ingress? It has been long enough IMO.

Isn’t there some lore that we are now in the “Prime” universe? Maybe if we somehow jumped back to the original one, then it would change back.

In November it will be changed to IngressX or Ingress Evolution.
The original scanner is the only one worthy of being called Ingress.
Other scanners such as prime may be known as ingress prime, primegress, or perhaps ingress*.
