Can this be done?

So as context, in my area there's this portal located inside a private mining company and the closest u can get to it is almost 160m from the center of it. I know because I went there today and tried getting in there but the guard said there was no way I could do that unless I work there. So being in the parking lot feeling defeated turning on and off my location hoping for the gps to go crazy and get in range to use Jarvis, an idea came to my mind.

What if I get a drone, a real drone, attach my phone to it, fly it over the location i want to attack and control that phone from another mobile with a remote control app to perform the attack? Does this fall under cheating because of the use of 3rd party apps (the remote controller). Maybe I know the answer but I wanted to make sure before trying it cause it's the only way I could bring down that portal other than trespassing and getting in trouble if I get caught.

I know 160m is in range of L8 bombs, and I tried using some but not even a % sign was showing considering it has 1 Aegis on it, I'm guessing that would require like more than 400 bombs and even more considering that they're gonna recharge it.

Read the first bit, immediately went oh another portal access debate, thankfully not,

Secondly, despite being featured in early ingress reports,,, Niantic have publicly said no .....

  • This is one of the most annoying things in the game along with spoofers and multi-accounters. I absolutely think all portals should be accessible to the public, if not permanently then at least on regular occasions.

Sites such as private mines, military bases, any location one needs special privileges to access should not have portals.

  • TheKingEngineTheKingEngine ✭✭✭✭✭

That will categorically seen as spoofing, though Niantic does not care about it and very likely won't do anything even if other players were reporting you.

However the comany may think you are trying to infiltrate their campus and thus call the police to detain you and will not return your devices promptly.

  • What if I get a drone, a real drone, attach my phone to it, fly it over the location i want to attack and control that phone from another mobile with a remote control app to perform the attack?

This has previously been explicitly stated as invalid.

The last line of this is relevant.

  • Lmao the comment saying what I pretend to do got removed haha. Sadly I don't have many options left other than doing "that what I pretend-to-do-and-cannot-be-mentioned" or writing the company to remove the portals. And I keep thinking that the 1st option is the best.

This comes up all the time, but what you see as accessible to the public and what another sees as accessible is entirely different. What I see as a nice hike up a mountain, visiting portals along the way and then building a field at the summit of a mountain, is completely inaccessible to someone in a wheelchair. What I see at disneyland is an awesome place for microfielding and uniques, what another sees as inaccessible because they're not in a position to spend $100 to gain that access. I see that huge military base I grew up next to, but it's completely inaccessible, so I reach out in local comms and find someone who has access and get work done how I can. Some portals are inaccessible to me because I ONLY have a cell phone, but some agents have better equipment and can access portals deep in the mountains.

The line between accessible and inaccessible is so blurry it's impossible to define. If the portal was created, it means SOMEONE can access it. Put in the work, figure it out and make it happen. Seeking internet sympathy isn't going to change accessibility.

In this particular case, if there is a way to get close enough to do damage, reach out to your local faction and see if you can get 3-4 agents together and go there in the middle of the night and spam it from a few directions. I've heard stories of that happening in my area as well. Sometimes that'll work too...

Good luck agent, this is what makes the game what it is.....

either recruit the guard to your team or just leave it, its just one portal..

one portal that has been holding big fields and is used as an important pivot since who knows how long, but it's been like that since I came back to play 6 months ago, i want it down.

Niantic's messaging on this topic has been... mixed...

I have the solution! Create a drone that can carry not just your phone but you as well.

They're not quite drones but helicopters and airplanes serve the same purpose. Both have been used for Ingress, and I've personally used one of the two.

  • That was produced by a PR company at a point where the company still thought spoofing was just something players were making up as a complaint.

Their messaging has been clear for a long time (original ruling post was in 2014 on G+, repeated in the new forums above).

  • HosetteHosette ✭✭✭✭✭

Niantic needs to consolidate all of its rules and clarifications in one place. New players and those who need to confirm the rules should have a single source that they can refer to for authoritative truth... players shouldn't be expected to comb multiple sites and read through every single comment on every single discussion (including those on sources that no longer exist) in order to learn all of the rules.

I know people who still claim things as rules that were only stated 50 comments deep on a contentious G+ discussion that no longer even exists on the internet. Imagine getting suspended for breaking that rule, asking "Where is that written down?" and discovering that it isn't but you were somehow still supposed to know and obey the rule.

I agree, and I've asked, and others have asked, for a bunch of new posts here on the forums to clarify all these things, but as yet, @NianticBrian has really only reposted that one linked above. The one that most comes to mind is synchronous use of multiple devices (e.g. octo-deploy from a plane with 8 phones and one account).

  • HosetteHosette ✭✭✭✭✭

Not on here, but in the rules document itself. People should have one single endpoint to get all of the rules, and not have to track/aggregate multiple sources.

  • For Military bases portals should be allowed as there are museums, parks, playgrounds, etc, around each base. Military housing is pretty big and removing the portals will disenfranchise the Agents who live there. The portals there are just as valid as those outside the gates as long as they don't interfere with any military operations. I work on Camp Pendleton on the west coast of the US and its one of the biggest bases in Southern California and Agents who live outside the gates have got aboard base before who are not military.

i'm sure "the PR company" didn't work for free. my statement stands, Niantic's messaging here has been mixed.

if you say something is good, then say it is bad, that is mixed messaging.

I've actually tried to use a flip card on a portal from within a private plane. with a ground speed in excess of 100mph, this was impossible to do. a helicopter would be able to do it (i'm certain i've seen youtube videos of this)

  • If you say once, that something is 'cool', and then repeatedly say "But we decided it's not fair so you can't do it any more" for the next 8 years... it's not really mixed.

Was in a helicopter a few weeks ago for work and deployed on a few portals. Most of the flight we were moving too fast, but fun to say I did I guess…

@GorillaSapiens I have deployed, modded, and hacked from a small plane. It takes a certain set of skills but it is certainly possible.

A Las Vegas anomaly was won by two agents in a small plane flipping down the anchor of a field. The other faction thought it couldn't be done.

  • Ever since Prime changed the speed lock technique, planes have been problematic. Helicopters also need to hover for a bit now.

Yeah but problem is niantic say those kind of portals are ok even if u cant reach them... This has been a problem for years hard reach portals that most cant go to due to security guard stop u etc... Not sure what niantic should do about those

Is the portal in the correct location? If not, maybe a location edit? Moving a portal drops its links, once. But if it's closer to the parking lot, maybe you could then reach it?

I vote for writing the owners of the mine, with instructions to ask for removal.

Meanwhile, many people have had great ideas for how Niantic could mitigate permafields from inaccessible portals.

Like, the more MU a portal is holding, the more times per day it ages. Eventually the team would tire of doing nothing but charging portals that decay every hour.

Or, allow field creation under a field - and the smaller field cuts a slice out of the big field, making it less MU. Eventually you could reduce it to being irrelevant.
