I'm confused why this announcement is only in the bug forum.
The Wayfarer community has an announcement specifically for PokeMongo. By calling out PoGo and not Ingress, it looks like it does not apply to Ingress. The Wayfarer announcements gives many specifics this one doesn't... which seems like those specifications don't include Ingress...
Wayfarer decides if a submission goes through. Yes! Niantic decides whether to bring it online and in which of their games. Several examples of 20+m submissions that were 5*/accepted in Wayfarer - but you get an email saying it may or may not show up in Ingress - if it does you get AP and key - but it syncs to PoGo/HPWU as usual. No reasonable explanation for why it doesn't come online in Ingress. May only hope they pop up in Ingress after server work is done !
As this is all about Nominations, Edits & Photo submissions which all fold into Wayfarer, I thought that it would make sense to mention it all on there.
People often “joke” that the Wayfarer Forums are in fact the unofficial Pokémon GO forums for Niantic, and it seems that Niantic may think the same given these two posts.
Pogo also uses the 20m rule on top of one per L17 S2 cell. In theory, any wayspot accepted into pogo should also make it into Ingress. Only real exception is sponsored locations, but those don’t seem to be handled in wayfarer.
Several treads both in Wayfarer general discussion and bug report - even PoGo submissions showing up in Ingress or HPWU only, not PoGo despite space/being alone in its cell. And vice versa.
Will this fix the bug where addition portal photos are accepted after submission in Ingress, but fail to appear in game? Apparently new photos accepted do go live but a bunch of older ones have never.
Is it even worth it to submit anything right now? There's something I want to submit, but I don't want it to be lost into the ether, or only used in other games that I don't play.
💯 I’ve been an avid submitter of quality portal nominations in Ingress. Emphasis on quality. I stay away from the junk I see on Wayfarer these days and I am also a very critical reviewer. That being said I’ve already had a few wayspots very recently “accepted” by Niantic’s for it’s games (per their carefully-worded emails) and not become portals in Ingress, which greatly disappoints me to say the least. I am now less enthusiastic about finding and submitting quality nominations. I won’t submit any more nominations and do any work for Niantic if this is the way it’s going to be.
Sure seems that way. Any time I go to wayfarer forums and post an Ingress-related wayfarer discussion, for example my latest post critical of Niantic/wayfarer sending you wayspot acceptance emails, not making them Ingress portals and using them in other games, receive a lot of disagreement and feedback from pogo players. 🤷🏽♂️
the "Busto CommCommemorative Bust" portal has been approved as visible from the attached screens, but it does not appear in game nor has I been given the key to the portal. Below I also put the coordinates of the nearest portal: 40.62925,14.393157
Earlier this month, we shared that the Ingress team has been working to upgrade the Ingress Portal Network to the latest version of Niantic Lightship. During the upgrade work, there was a delay in Ingress Portal nominations, edits, and photo submissions showing up in our Scanners and the Intel Map. More info on that can be found in the initial post of this thread.
This week, we pushed an update that puts Ingress on the latest version of Niantic Lightship and Wayfarer. Your nominations, edits, and photo submissions that were delayed during that time are now being processed and Ingress accepted nominations should start to show in Scanners/Intel Map. Please know that Wayspot nominations are to the Niantic Lightship (platform), and an accepted Wayspot to Lightship may not necessarily mean integration into Ingress’ Portal Network. More on this below...
OK but where’s my accepted Portal?
First, a couple of definitions:
Niantic Lightship is the platform that stores all of Niantic’s Wayspot information and other geographic data about the real world, for all of our game development teams to use.
Niantic Wayfarer is the program that allows players to nominate and review Wayspots to be added to Niantic Lightship.
Now then…
Ingress was updated and is now using the same Niantic Lightship version that all Niantic games are using to display Portals, PokéStops, Fortresses, etc. When you submit a nomination, you are participating in the Wayfarer program to submit something for consideration on the Lightship platform - regardless of the game you submit it from. Each game is able to create their own rules for how to use Lightship’s Wayspots to populate and shape their specific gameboard.
We are aware that this change causes some confusion on the status of your nominations in Ingress. Right now, the emails you receive about an accepted Portal come from Ingress, but the signal to send that email is actually from the Lightship platform and not Ingress. Meaning, the email is being triggered when a nomination is accepted to Lightship, not when it’s accepted into Ingress. We recognize that this is causing confusion to believe that a nomination should automatically appear in the Portal Network and are working with the Wayfarer team to address that. Please see the latest Wayfarer update post to learn more about how the notifications emails will be updated and we are also looking at how we might provide more clarity on when an accepted Wayfarer nomination is included in Ingress.
Now, what about all the Portals that showed in the last 24 hours?
Now that Ingress is now on the same version of the Lightship platform that all Niantic games are on, we have some new Portals that didn’t previously exist to us! Many of these Wayspots existed in Lightship already for other games, but because we weren’t on the newest version, you didn’t see them in game until we finished our upgrade. We acknowledge that the number of new Portals on the gameboard is shockingly different from what you’re used to in some countries. We should have spent more time to test the impact and make gameboard adjustments accordingly and we, along with the Lightship team, are working on this now.
There is no “going back” to the old version - it is no longer being supported. There is only going forward and we are doing our best to get things cleaned up as quickly as possible. If you run across one of these new Portals with no picture, snag AP by submitting one! If you see a Portal that you feel does not meet Wayfarer standards, let us know by using the Scanner to report it.
Very informative. Thank you for the clarification. I’d like to ask if there’s any possibility that portals that were approved in the recent timeframe by Lightship and haven’t appeared in mass within the last 24 hours in Ingress, have any chance of appearing in the near future at all? If they have not appeared in Ingress but have in Pokémon Go, should we anticipate that they will or is there no chance at this point as of your forum post?
Quite a sad situation, of course. Many portals have appeared in closed areas, in prisons and a few kilometres off the coast, so it will be difficult to approach them anytime soon to send a request for removal. But, we've always cleaned up after pokemonists, so it's not the first time we've had to do that) Thanks for explaining the situation, although it's strange that the team hasn't made you aware that they want to de facto add a huge number of bad portals.
I think it’s unclear to me what’s actually changed in regards to how things have been vs. moving forward. Previous, once approved, it was immediate. Moving forward, once things have settled down, is this something that will be pushed daily like in PoGo, weekly? Have any “ rules” changed as far as which portals will make it into Ingress and which ones won’t? (20m radius, etc)
I'm really not looking forward to trash from PoGo players continuing to appear while stuff from us doesn't. Crossing games is fine, but Wayfarer should prioritize the game it was submitted from, provided it meets all requirements to go live. When I submit something, I want to see it become a portal in Ingress. I couldn't care less if it appears in PoGo or any other game. Just like those in PoGo who submit McDonald's and their left foot want to see it added to PoGo and couldn't care less if it appears in Ingress if they don't play Ingress.
so is there a plan to have a map of poi instead of intell if ingress doesn't get all accepted poi for whatever reason ?
i don't know what kind of weird rule made a poi withotu any around appear in pogo and hpwu and not ingress/intell (more than a month ago) but so now we have to open every niantic game to check if the poi exist ?
I can't speak on behalf of everybody else disagreeing with your comment, but from my point of view, everything commented sounds entirely like it was written and approved by internal Niantic Comms QA. It is not helpful and instead makes light of serious issues to seemingly sweep them under the rug. Such bland communications, talking at us, is not becoming of somebody who is supposed to be a Community Specialist and who is supposed to talk with us.
Moving to LightShip, fair enough, it makes Niantic's backend easier to manage across all the games. That's fine.
What we need is proper feedback, knowing whether a portal is accepted or not is critical knowledge for us as this then gives us a key, AP and an uptick on our stats. Making the notification ambiguous does not help and only frustrates users as it opens up too many questions (Did it go through, did it not, why not, when will it go through, etc.). Too many people are already facing the issue of having accepted nominations, but no user feedback to indicate what is happening if they don't see the portal (but do see it as a Pokestop/Gym or Inn/Fortress instead!).
With what happened in Istanbul, Russia and other areas yesterday is despicable. Blindly importing data from FourSquare to make prisons, generic businesses and brothels all POI's is a joke and only spits in the face of people who advocate quality within the Wayfarer system. Not to mention the insane number of created POI's and all the ones in the water. Nobody is willing to do Niantic's work to fix their mess on this, so it's disrespectful to ask people to add photos if they see "one". Niantic need to fix their own mistakes on this. Be accountable, own it.
You said should start to show up. Is this process complete? If you could please give a little more clarification then that would be great.
It's one thing to not have something show up in Ingress because it's too close but it's another to put time in effort submitting something and having it be random whether it appears or not.
Agreed. It's far too easy to get garbage POI's in the game, and it's WAY to hard to get it sorted. The recent changes to location editing and 'proximity to portal to make changes' is preventing us even further from keeping the portal network of a high quality.
It seems very odd to me that you've decided to go for a new upgraded system without providing Wayfarers the capacity to actually query/see what's in the Lightship system beforehand.
Up until now, players from other games used Ingress and Intel as the source of truth to guide what to nominate or not. If Ingress is no longer a clear representation of the source of truth, then we're flying blind here. I've had reports of several players having things marked as duplicate when they don't even appear in Ingress.
This lack of clarity on the rules of the specific game rules as well as not having access to an integrated map of what's already online, is hurting the players that have been trying to help the system.
As a player of both PoGo and Ingress, I've always wished NIA would (finally) unify the rules for all the game boards and bring an end to the discriminatory cell system to limit which POIs go into which games, but instead you surprised and made the delta even bigger and unclearer.
Comments
Dont forget to only apply the changes on new submissions. Old submissions rotting since months or years should still be rated by old rules.
I would be interested to know what impact - if any - the Niantic Lightship change will have.
really strange, my new portal lastnight that got added to ingress is like 20m to nearest... strange this,.... 120m shouldnt be any distance problem..
I gave up on wayfarer due to the very low quality of most submissions compared to Ingress. Portal subs I no longer bother with unless truly worthy.
Portal scans, why when we will probably never see any scan output function in Ingress?
Again, this release info was ambiguous to say the least...
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaa, tell me more.
I'm confused why this announcement is only in the bug forum.

That would be the best case scenario....but i doubt it
Have you got a GPS location?
48.867839, 2.410894
It’s odd that the similar announcement on the Wayfarer forums specifically calls out Pokémon GO but doesn’t mention Ingress.

I'm guessing this is why I got a nomination accepted, an email, but no key, no points and no Portal appearing?

there's no more reason to nominate or review for me now as most of them not go live in ingress but show up in pogo. Complete nonsense
