in the US, the CDC just yelled Olly Olly Oxen Free

"Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance. "

  • Emphasis on *Fully Vaccinated*.

  • Also, the CDC only provides guidelines and recommendations. They have may influence, but no actual authority.

    Depends on municipality.

Some places are going to be wild wild west, others slowly, and more measured depending on how urban the area you are playing in is.

my dad was a microbiologist. when someone says "shot", i roll up my sleeve. as an international traveler, and former worker in biotech, i've been vaccinated against things you may never even have heard of. to me, the "vaccine reluctance" thing is simply incomprehensible. we've wiped smallpox off the planet (except for 3 research labs), and we're darn near eliminating polio too. vaccines are a triumph of modern medical science. i got my shots as soon as i could, and even travelled an hour away to get them. at this point, i view not getting the shot (barring true medical issues) as a failure in character.

As much as I understand the importance of vaccinations, not everyone can be vaccinated. You have immunocompromised people who can't receive the vaccines.

There's also the whole issue on making sure the vaccines are being distributed in the best possible way. Is it human to have doubts about the vaccines even though the research of these current ones go back to the first SARS outbreak and epidemic.

In person First Saturdays and Anomalies should return. What shouldn't return are before and after anomaly parties and Recharge Parties. If outdoor events like Community Days are fine for Pokemon Go, there's no reason Ingress can't have our equivalent. The rest of us shouldn't have to wait for the jackelopes flipflopping on getting vaccinated.

I doubt we'll see anomalies anytime soon. Anomalies are global in-person events and there are still too many cases and not enough people vaccinated worldwide to safely hold that kind of event (and have it be representative of each region). In many countries, government restrictions won't allow it anyway.

First Saturday seems more likely. I could possibly see Niantic adopting a hybrid approach allowing in-person IFS in places with low cases and high vaccination rates, while still offering a remote option in places where the opposite is true and for people who still don't feel comfortable attending an in-person event.

  • ...You have immunocompromised people who can't receive the vaccines.

the Covid vaccines do not have live virus. immunocompromised can safely receive the mRNA vaccines. it may not provide the high efficacy it does in non-immunocompromised people, but some protection is better than none. These people should of course consult with their doctors first, but I have a friend who is an oncology nurse, and she said the majority of her patients have received a vaccine for Covid because their doctors are recommending they do so.

the proportion of "can't be vaccinated because real bona fide medical conditions" is FAR, FAR smaller than the proportion of "think they shouldn't get it because their religion / the internet / whatever scared them out of it".

CDC says vaccinated people can return to normal. this includes parties.

The dialogue should be there that these vaccinations are not exactly new - they have been developed in some form since 2003. The education on the vaccinations should be provided instead of assuming things - just like @StallionMang informed me about immunocompromised people.

The situation isn't the same outside of the US. The benefit of Ingress is being able to finding out about the world around us and how covid restrictions are.

  • As much as I understand the importance of vaccinations, not everyone can be vaccinated. You have immunocompromised people who can't receive the vaccines.

The whole point of everyone who can get it being vaccinated, is to protect those people who can't, so they can go back to normal just like everyone else. But until then, those people have to take additional precautions because of the anti-vaxxers.

  • With parts of the world still in terrible state, I can almost guarantee that Niantic will not be starting anomalies any time soon. As for First Saturday, if your region allows gatherings, you are free to suggest a meeting spot for attendees of yours. But there will be no double AP or restock portal.
