I love the idea of links/fields under fields I've seen so many people burn out on the low levels cause they're constantly under a field and can't microlink there way to even using guns. If this game needs anything it's not scaring off smurflibgs/tadpoles.
And I say this as a fielder. Bring it: if someone can out field my fields under a field I didn't field well enough or didn't defend strong enough. Also opens new ways to rail while you're clearing.
Also to remember that a large number of players have been requesting the ability to link and field under control fields for many years. As those players have been restricted in their play, due to permanent BAFs
Whilst personally, I don't want to see this sort of novelty become permanent, I feel that being a thing for events as a good thing to encourage people to play.
I'm a fan of the one week "crazy ingress" things like this. It will be a different thing from normal and I like that.
I THOROUGHLY think this should never be a permanent option to the game as it deletes the competition that we have all played hard with over the years. COMPLETELY changes the game in a permanent situation and, frankly, I would be completely wrong in believeing this is just a "fun different thing"
What stupidity... What is the interest of such an innovation? Break the game? Turn it into trivial ****? That's what's so interesting about Ingress, is that you have to think about how to arrange it all, calculate the number of links, the keys, your trajectory. And what's that? What's the fun in it? What's the fun in it? The fact that it is easy and simple? That you can not turn on your brain?
It would be better to remove the covid measures and make the game the way it used to be, INTERESTING, not simple. There are other games geared towards below average minds, can we stop lowering ingress to the level of such games already?
Not like the game hasn't fundamentally changed before..... Think of the introduction of the score board. Before that most cities I knew used the metric of portals owned/how much your colour covered the map.
Score board brought MU to the forefront and then everything became about the biggest baddest layered fiekdsnd shutting down entire regions.
So go ahead and **** those layered fields. What's the problem? Is it laziness? Isn't exploring new places one of the main goals of ingress?
Well, yes, ****, I'll go quietly remove all the fields in the same matryoshka opponent, leave only the outer, and link freely his - this is a very "interesting" game.
Or maybe you don't know how to build these nesting dolls in normal mode, without niantic offerings?
It's actually quite the opposite IMO. It allows everyone to play the full game. It severely limits the ability of agents to use the game mechanics to make the game less fun for other players. This is the kind of change the game needs to keep more people playing and encourage more people to start playing. When you're whole town is covered by the other team and you're a level 1, there's not much incentive to play or be able to link/field beyond the tutorial itself. If you have a competitor that persistent or even trolly, you've likely lost a potential addition to the game.
You can put scoring as a second to having fun, or you can make the scoring/linking rules so Niantic complex that it's not worth figuring out. IE: if the field you were trying to link under had 2 or 3 anchors all inside your cell, you couldn't link. Rules like this start to make things confusing for every player, so I think we're going to see a global use, people who play for the score, may need to change how they play. It's a great compromise, and could have actually prevented a ton of drama and kept more people playing over the years if the idea was accepted earlier. Strategic links are just as important, you can't link through them.
While it's a limited time event, Niantic needs to hear loud and clear just how disruptive this is going to be - there's a very good chance that this is going to cost a lot of cells their win streaks - something the other faction hasn't been able to accomplish by actual game play but that now will be very easy for them to accomplish by just fielding under fields they can't normally drop. Cells where agents have worked very hard to keep their score at the top for several years in a row could easily have that stat destroyed by this - not game play by other players, not because the other faction actually pulled off a win, but because someone at Niantic decided that they needed to be all touchy-feely-xfacy and make it possibly for both teams to field in the same area.
This is a horribly idea and in the space of 2 days may destroy something that thousands of people have worked hard for months or even years to build.
the core of Ingress is capture the flag - capture territory for your faction. for the entire time of this event, you no longer can do that. you can field, but I can field under you and what you own is now mine, too.
This is a great opportunity for deer. Agents who play mindlessly. Big fields are just as easy to ****, crossover. And 1st tier players can turn to more experienced players for help. Not only that, such situations even force them to turn, get acquainted and, as a consequence, get into the community faster.
@NianticBrian I'm SUPER excited for this event. I believe it's a useful new mechanic, but it NEEDS to be tempered with a limitation of link distances to allow for small leveling opportunities (microfielding) instead of allowing people to create long derp links or large MU counts.
The primary complaint from the vocal players is that this disallows their "hard teamwork" from controlling an area. There are two components to this:
1) They worry their strong teamwork isn't strong enough to control an area because of MU gain. This is valid concern.
BUT
2) They believe that stopping people from being able to link/field over long periods of time is a legitimate tactic and want people to stop playing the game in their area.
From what I've gathered on IUENG, #2 is what they're whining about. When presented with the idea of making links/fields worth 0AP, but MU only (and increasing deploy AP), I got no response. The hard truth is that these seasoned players don't care about the health of the game, they care about being allowed to be lazy by pushing new players out. This is the point of contention you'll be facing.
For Ingress to continue, I believe eliminating the use case of pushing players out of the game is necessary. The vocal few will fight losing their ability to abuse the game mechanics, but it will be an overall win for new player retention.
As I've menitoned, link distance and MU mechanics are valid things which would need to be visited for this to work as a permanent change. Overall, I'm excited for the event but will predict MU scores will get out of control during the event due to lack of link limitations. 😎
There is nothing fun about this for those of us that are going to have to spend the entire weekend on the road, frantically battling to prevent something that should never have happened, or see ourselves not only lose cycle but lose streaks that are months to years long.
Had niantic put up a poll first, i'm pretty sure there would have been an overwhelming **** of NO in response to "should we do this"
Did you miss the part where I said I am in fact number 1 in my area. I'm great at it. I'm just not crazy, profanity laden against wrapping my head around a change.
sorry, nope. if I field, I own the area - so now you've got hold of one side, I have hold of the other, we are now SHARING the area instead of one of us capturing it - and there are only so many portals. you've got 10 fields up, and I just put 50 up under it - you're gonna get to spend your entire weekend dropping what I'm going to be throwing or I'm going to have your score for this cycle. hope you like sleeping in your car.
Fields under fields with max length link, yes.. it will help users who cannot play (low level, spoofing, etc..) being able to microfielding.
Field under fields with no restrictions in a event, no.. because it will benefit big existing fields, having the oportunity to increase side links (faction side no matter). When the event ends ppl who cannot play because live under a field it will have more difficult to broke it.
Seems to me there's a simple solution to the conflict between those who want to preserve their leaderboard streaks by maintaining BAFs and those who want to actually be able to play the game (and have it accessible to new players) under the BAFs.
Don't award MU for the "fields under fields". You want MU? Go build a bigger field around the existing one. Or build in an empty area.
Then they don't affect scoreboard. But the game becomes much more accessible to new players - and those who enjoy microfielding can do so in peace.
I don't have a car. Everyone told me I wouldn't be able to make a difference in ingress without one. Guess what that's not true. It just takes planning and skill and utilization of resources (including people).
A system changes, learn to make that an advantage. A member of the other team gets a boat to whole geography changes. Adapt, watch, learn do better.
You're seriously this put out by having to adapt to how you play the game for just a week? Going to have to start dusting off some old rustled jimmies memes with the way some of you are reacting to a temporary change.
you don't agree that ingress is just a game of territory grabbing?
You also missed the point about how you can mutilate the real work of agents when people go to other areas, destroy crosses together, make big fields, nested. Now imagine that after doing such work, someone alone destroys all the inside fields and under the biggest fields quietly re-links themselves in exactly the same way. Oops! It turns out that those who really worked one field, but came to all ready-made 50 pieces of them. That's it.
As a better player, can you describe the approximate technique for building nested fields with three beds?

What a joke. Really bad idea. A big great finger in the face to all the agents that play the game in a serious manner.
As current number one on the score board in a large city... I feel no finger being flashed at me.
Looking forward to trying something new in the game. Cool!
It's a video game on your phone. Try taking it a little less seriously?
Agree
Disagree,
It is a limited time event.

Do ingress players really have that little creativity? Oh no, I might have to adapt my strategy that I've been using for years on end.
I'd prefer to think of ways I could adapt, still win and let other people play.
I'm a fan of the one week "crazy ingress" things like this. It will be a different thing from normal and I like that.

Don't prove me wrong.

Was hoping more for the drone layer to unlock for this event...
Great event, good fun. Let's invent secret non-announced before medals;)
i am excited - same team agents who don't communicate with me keep messing up my layers fielding over them and finally i can fix them!
