Weird question: Do the tutorial portals count as uniques?

HosetteHosette ✭✭✭✭✭

It's been a very long time since that cold night in 2013 when I first installed Ingress to check it out, but I remember the game creating a few fake portals during the tutorial. I was recently inspired to figure out the first ten portals I ever visited. I figured out 1-4 and 9-10 but 5-8 are a mystery... I never visited them again despite the fact that I've been in that exact area many times in the interim and have made many repeat visits to the others in the first 10.

This was in Trafalgar Square, London, and it's hard for me to imagine that four portals disappeared from there between December 2013 and September 2015, so the only thing that I can figure out is that they're the tutorial portals. Does anyone know for sure?

  • The current tutorial directs you to existing portals, not fake ones. (Maybe it still does if no portals are nearby?)

So no way of testing this in Prime.

Out of curiosity, how did you test this?

AFAIK there is no way to do so.

If there’s absolutely zero portals in your field of view the tutorial will generate temporary ‘fake’ portals. And it is possible to test, you can repeat the tutorial whenever you like. Open the app, go to Settings, scroll down and find Agent Primer section and there’s a button to repeat the tutorial.

That was in Redacted, but in Prime, it just completely skips the tutorial, it doesn't generate portals for training.

I just remember that redacted would save the coordinates of where you took the tutorial. An odd thing to save in a person's account.

It's hard to imagine that over the course of two years (or really 'from 7-5 years ago', 4 portals in a tourist area disappeared?

We lost a lot of portals in the Panaramio fallout, when people reported portals for random tourist snapshots that couldn't be reproduced with a new photo. We've lost a lot of portals from other reasons too, and it may even have been that they were moved away by malicious actors, or people correcting a location.

Of my 31k Unique Visit points, about 2.5k of them no longer exist since there's no entries in the new Portal_History.tsv for them (table is just under 29k portals).

@XQlusioN I ask for data dumps every couple of years from companies who have a lot of data on me.

@Perringaiden In this case, yes it's hard for me to imagine that. I know that particular area really well, and I have a pretty clear memory of that night including exactly where I was sitting, what portals I interacted with and in roughly what order, what my walking path was after I sat there for a while figuring it out and then did the tutorial before I got up and started wandering. I can even tell you which theatre I'd just left (the Duchess), which show I'd just seen (The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui).

That's another thing that makes me think these are tutorial portals. I interacted with the portals that were in scanner range of me for a while then started the tutorial. The four that were in scanner range were, in the order I interacted with them:

    • King George IV
    • Fountain, Trafalgar Square 2
    • George Washington
    • Bust of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe

I did the tutorial while I was still sitting on the ledge, and portals 5-8 are the ones that have no repeats in my history. I do find it rather difficult to believe that four portals disappeared within that particular 40M radius between December 2013 and September 2015. The logical conclusion is that they're the tutorial portals , and I was curious to know if anyone had solid information about this.

I don't have a Portal_History.tsv in my dump that was pulled at the end of January. Do you know when it made an appearance?

  • I got mine on 31st January, after Uniques appeared on the map.

@Perringaiden Well then, we have a pretty narrow window. The date on my files is January 29 2021, 4:32 PM PST. The last line in portals_visited.tsv is 2021-01-29 14:46:20 PST.

Interestingly, the most recent entry in game_log.tsv is 2021 01-24 22:10:50.

Actually, sorry just realized that that was when they replied with "Thanks for your inquiry".

My visited log has a final entry of:

    2021-02-16 21:30:55 PST 24628

but the Portals_History.tsv doesn't have dates, just "Type, Lat, Lng".

I might have to do the same ID review of my Portals_visted data to see if I can find early portals I only ever visited once, since I did the tutorial around my local area that I was in constantly.
