I love it, but Can I suggest that you merge Visited and Captured into one multi colored layer with captured portals overriding portals that have merely been visited? And then add a seperate layer for drone visited portals?
I noticed a possible glitch in the scanner tonight while changing the alignment of a few portals. I had capture turned on, the red ring was showing while the portal was owned by the other faction. After destroying it and turning it blue, the red ring disappeared. I believe it may have also happened while turning neutral portals blue. I switched to visit and then back to capture and it was corrected with the red ring showing once again.
But this is happening in my scanner too. (and changing the zoom on intel on this portal makes no difference)
However it may be related to this quote:
"We're aware of a known issue where Portal History rings temporarily disappear when a Portal's Level changes, for example from a Level 1 to Level 2 Portal, and we're working on a fix."
I can't test it atm because I cannot upgrade the portal I'm sitting on, I'll have to wait for someone to pass to upgrade :P
I would not mind at all if it was inside settings or on menu, like drone net and tutorial. It's best feature ever, but it doesn't need to be shown all the time.
When it was just the compass it didn't bottered me, even thou I noticed it was weird there (for some reason the one from redacted looked better "wellplaced", maybe because it was 3D). But this raise a fear of a lot more new "things" poping up and staying there over the map.
Redacted was really minimalistic with the UI, having almost all the screen with the map, it was like 10% on top and 5% down, with the compass flying. Prime has empty space on top and bottom, and larger UI, both on top and bottom, with less map. More hovering buttons will make a mess. I think there is plenty of space for the compass on top left, with the UI, and the layers could be on settings.
Sure, but Ingress isn't a maps application, where it's hard to predict what kind of information someone might be interested in at any given moment.
In a different world, we'd have a single layer highlighting not-captured & not-visited portals. Similar to in Pokémon Go, Agents could leave this layer on all the time. The only reason, then, for having a layer toggle would be for Scout Controller, which I feel isn't enough of a driving force to justify occupying space on the main screen.
@NianticBrian Layers button is in wrong spot. If you have a mission, the text description box gets stuck. It won't close/minimize. Same with missions involving catchphrase. The 'Enter' button occupies same space as layers. Also when looking at a portal, you cannot use bottom right mod slot. All because all 3 are in the same spot as layers button.
That and the compass should be towards top left anyways
Should add that from portal view, if you click on one of the other 3 mod slots, you can still add a mod to that bottom right slot. Also, the bottom right mod slot then works for that portal, until you open up some other portal

Lol, it is literally a maps and POI application. Just because the purpose is to capture stuff instead of visit a museum, doesn't mean the format isn't exactly relevant.
🤷♂️ "I need map! Where's the scanner?" That's never a thought that's crossed my mind. The purpose and features provided by the scanner vs. Google Maps are so vastly different that I mentally put them in completely different categories. Designing around the fact that they share main screens with a passing similarity or two is a false consistency.
I don't really care whether Google Maps has a layer chooser. I'd just as soon see it gone from the scanner, cf. my previous comment.
It's not perfect, but I love this update. The serious problem is that it's making me want to explore when I should be resting at home (I'm suffering from post-Covid effects).
Although I know you're stating about the UI being similar to Google Maps as Keyhole created Google Maps, I don't think Niantic has any input for the Google Maps of today.
The UI button on Google Maps has only been added in the last few years. As much as it's uniformity, it is strange UX as a layers button. The button reminds me of the Integrated Timer app which is an overlay that can be adjusted anywhere on the screen.
I didn't mean so much 'input to Google Maps' but that they're following the same styling because many of the upper members of Niantic used to be the Google Maps team.
I would like to see the layers button moved away from the map screen and placed on the same screen with settings, store etc. It is a useful feature but the placement of the button is a tad intrusive.
Comments
I think this is where we are starting to see this possibility. This really is the first update that unifies the scanner and intel map.
This is a known bug with intel. Zooming in and out of intel corrects the layer.
Can we have the layer menu moved to the left of the compass icon. Seems cluttered below it.

This would be nice, as UPC counts towards UPV anyways.
But what colours do you propose for easily distinguishing between UPC and UPV?
Or maybe a double ring around portals?
Red and purple

Known bug ... part of relese notes..

I wish i could move the unique layer button, my ideal for me would be under where u quick tap to power cubes.

Google Maps style. Remember Niantic's roots.
I would like to chose from visited/owned circle to not visited/not owned cirlce :)
ring are to small :(
Yeah, def interested in the inversion...#DoubleOnyxPioneerOrBust 😂🤣
Would it be possible to have an option to NOT show these icons? I hit them without purpose every day. And I dont use them.

If it can be anywhere, why not?
That change to the compass looks both awful and cluttered, and breaks with the established format for mapping applications, that Google Maps created.
It's not a coincidence that the compass and the layers are in the same position.
