Hi everyone, we're experimenting with ways to reintroduce live ops (Global Challenges) with temporary bonuses to Ingress in the current environment, when live events (Anomalies) are still on-hold. The challenge, as you mentioned, is that Ingress is a global game and our temporary bonuses are also applied globally. To try and balance this, the Eos Protocol medal is intended to show your active participation, with the bar to receive this medal being intentionally very accessible. We're still discussing what that specific threshold should be, and wanted to share a "save the date" and answer some of the questions we were seeing about Year 8 timing and rewards now, to give Agents a week's notice before Nov 9.
We're listening to your feedback and making adjustments, and we'll have more to share shortly. Thank you.
Lockdown here means that at least the end of November, we can be legally stopped by a police officer and fined if we are more than 5km from our homes. That means that we CAN get out and capture portals, etc, but unless you’re just starting, how many agents have a unique portal within 5km? This first phase, at least, needs a serious re-think!
Thank you for listening us, Brian. To be honest, I don't think is your fault but from the playerbase who was constantly asking about global events but without thinking there was a pandemic going on.
They accounted for this - they don't mean UPV, they mean unique since the start of the Phase.
"Note that all measurements are new and unique within each Phase. For example, even if an Agent previously captured “Portal X” prior to the Eos Protocol, capturing this same Portal during Phase 1 will still be counted for 3 points because it is new and unique during Phase 1"
With infection rates rising and lockdowns in progress anything other than postponing the event and doing something entirely drone-based instead is risking your players lives, and their friends, families and colleagues lives.
Thank you SO MUCH for this update. While I'm very excited to see global challenges returning, I have to agree with a lot of other people's concerns. Phase 2 of Eos Protocol is called "See With New Eyes" and I can't help but think this involves some sort of play-from-home drone competition. If possible, please provide more clarity about the other competitions sooner rather than later and move the drone event to the first challenge to coincide with the European lockdown and reduce badge FOMO for agents globally.
A drone and/or recharge event sounds SUPER boring, but could involve LOADS more people.
It would seem imperative to release total points required for each medal tier as soon as possible. Also to make at least the lowest tier very low, and also to make it clear if points must be earned in all three phases or not.
Yes, ideally this event would be postponed or rather: ideally we would not have Covid restrictions, but the majority of players will be able to play at least in a limited way, at least during one of the phases.
So please @NianticBrian Niantic, let us know as soon as possible how many minimum points will be required for each tier, and if players can achieve Onyx medal during only one or two phases, or they must participate in all three.
This will allow people to plan how and when they may be able to get the medal safely and legally.
Please do not hide the medal tier requirements which will entice people to play beyond safe boundaries or limits. As mentioned by other posters, this was a miserable way to conduct medals at the best of times.
If all the tier requirements are reasonable, clear and released early, we, who are under restrictions, can plan how to obtain at least bronze or silver in the safest way and at the safest time.
Players who are fortunate not to be under restrictions can push the numbers for each faction. Please don't entice all players to push their playing boundaries by having unknown or unreasonably high tiers.
If Niantic is certain this event wouldn't be best postponed, at least allow everyone the best chance to obtain the medal safely, so everyone can contribute globally.
In addition, there are ways to add more excitement into drone work that would make the event unique.
What if, for example, there is a badge that involves glyph hacking (drones and non-drones included), but the first hour after each checkpoint, drone cooldown is only 10 minutes?
What if, during a recharge event, all hacks (including drone hacks) produce more power cubes?
What if Wayfarer agreements were incorporated into the event? These can be done on a computer at home.
The three examples above are ones that I was able to generate quickly as play-from-home friendly events. I'm sure that there is potential for much more. When we try to include more people in our events rather than exclude others, the Ingress community wins.
Make the bronze really easy, but keep the gold as regular as no pandemic.
Most player don't even hit silver anyway.
All Nemesis badges were like that, with most player doing only bronze, some silver and only the true hardcore achieving gold. So make bronze and silver easier, but keep gold challenging.
As the UK moves into lockdown for a month on Thursday this event will be nigh-on impossible for most of us to complete whilst abiding by the law. I'm proud of my badges and the last thing I want is a 'loser' badge to add to my collection. Give us the option to delete the badge so at least I can play a little
If an Agent captures 100 unique Portals and neutralizes 100 unique Portals during Phase 1, they will earn 400 points towards their Eos Medal (100*3 points)+(100*1 point)
Absolutely NOWHERE in this statement, does this say it's an example. It is one of the 4 definition points on this.
It reads as if you can at most gain 100 points from neutralizing unique portals, and 300 points from capturing unique portals.
It doesn't make it clear at all whether this is an upper limit or an example. And given that there is no advertised values for the tiers, it makes sense that this is an upper limit to ensure people don't go overboard without the final values.
"You can at most earn 400 points towards your EOS medal"
vs
"As an example, doing this would earn you 400 points"
This is not a question you can answer. Only @NianticBrian or another official source can.
All I want to say is "STOP DOING THIS IMMEDIATELY".
Launching this protocol is too harmful for health of agents, as many European agents claimed.
Also, situation is becoming worse in here, Japan, especially in Hokkaido region. (More than tripled in a month, and number of positive cases is still increasing drastically)
I'm worrying that this protocol forces to load on agents in Taiwan and New Zealand, where the pandemic almost stops......
Dear agents, it's NOT time to move, I think. Stay at home and keep safe, then see you after the pandemic disappears.
Sorry but I am all for this event. Not all of the world is in lock down. We have zero restrictions locally.
We are in desperate need of an event. If you can't go out, I am sorry about that, but many of us in less populous regions of the world missed out on many events due to location.
Pokemon's has a ton of events, I don't see ppl screaming about that.
If you are not in lockdown, solo walking with minimum distance keeping is very safe, wear a mask.
sound like great. i hope after this event, developer do make new function and new system for ingress. since long time i play this game, the ingress make me get real friend he helpup me around world and help for my life i want dev. get do it big update again
so in Thailand is safe for play bcuz we have high personal protection from covid19 since virus coming , faceshield mashup and algohol gel washing everywhare and we have personal tracking to trackback everybody if her get covid19
best game for life
alittlebit hope i hope this medal can count for level unlock
I remember there was something very similar to this about a year to a year and a half ago where the community was tasked to put up as many resos as possible except the double ap came at this time of the year.
It's literally the 8th Anniversary month for Ingress. Couldn't imagine that happening without an event.
I don't remember such a fuss about it when it was initially announced some weeks back. I think the event can be better balanced by spreading it out over more weeks or months. The current 3 phases over 2 months doesn't do well considering how half the world is jumping in and out of lockdowns at random.
As far as individual badges go, Niantic needs to make the lowest tier achievable in 1 phase and in a 1 km radius. Also lower the top tier and global faction targets. Seriously, even people who can move about can only do so in a restricted radius. 5 million looks ludicrous. The rumoured 8K also looks like a number achievable pre-pandemic.
As for the "not a good time" comments, it's not going to be a good time for at least the next 12-18 months at least. One may or may not be in a lockdown, but the COVID infection numbers are higher than yesterday. People are playing regardless of the number of cases. If one chooses to go out for anything, do it responsibly. The minimum you need to do it wear a mask properly, keep a distance and keep your hands clean.
Things that Niantic could do to ensure players don't take unnecessary risks - lower targets and no activities that need help. Going to stress on the 2nd one coz more outrage will happen when you announce the actual Connected Cells to be scored. Connected Cells are also shitty because they're always played by agents outside of the CC. You might pick a CC with zero covid cases and no restrictions but it will have to be played by people outside of the CC.
And finally, what's with these stupid half announcements?
Announce tiers, badge designs, phase activities, etc. in one go. To expect people to play during a pandemic at least give us a chance to plan out how we want to play. This hiding of details is utter **** when you know details can at least help people plan things out and be safe.
Comments
Hence if Niantic reduced the target to say, 1 million, this would be acceptable.
Personally I want to see events return, but it HAS to balance player safety during this pandemic
finally something that does not involve xfac r a p
good event looking forward to ;)
I know COVID-19 is still persist and dangerous however this challenge does not requiere to be in large group or so
so wear a mask and keep a safe distance.

Thank you for these event series. Events are what Ingress is all about and I do hope you proceed with this one.
Thank you for listening us, Brian. To be honest, I don't think is your fault but from the playerbase who was constantly asking about global events but without thinking there was a pandemic going on.

WOW!!!😍😍😍 CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!
CAUSE WE ARE THE RESISTANCE AGENTS AND WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP!!
AND THE AMERICANS AND THE WORLD NEEDS ME AND THE BLUE TEAM!!!😎
I will ignore the lockdown comments, I think all has been said that needs to be said there.
But will there be cell scores for this? It would be nice to see how the factions are competing locally, and perhaps even the individual agents.
Thanks for at least considering reducing the target threshold.
Will you also consider reducing the threshold for the other 2 parts of EOS? Linking and fielding?
Agreed. The event itself sounds good, but the timing isn't (certainly not for many European countries).
With infection rates rising and lockdowns in progress anything other than postponing the event and doing something entirely drone-based instead is risking your players lives, and their friends, families and colleagues lives.
First thought, a global challenge just as so many places are going into lock downs? ugh. Yes, we can play solo, but
Second thought, what the heck? We are starting an event on a Monday and it only covers 1 weekend? /sigh
Niantic fails to realize that the winning faction will be the one who broke public health guidelines the best.
Thank you for listening!

Other examples of inclusive badge-related challenges:
These can be done easily from home from a drone if one chooses, or on a walk to the grocery store.

Maybe your toxicity is the main reason why we haven't events for a while. Keep your poison for yourself.

All are unique for the event.
I remember there was something very similar to this about a year to a year and a half ago where the community was tasked to put up as many resos as possible except the double ap came at this time of the year.
This is going to behave similar to the challenges we had last summer. 100, 750, 1500 are possible targets.
It's literally the 8th Anniversary month for Ingress. Couldn't imagine that happening without an event.
