So now that G+ followed in game chat, how do agents communicate?
I'm a returning player after a long absence... And I was wondering since in game chat is gone, and G+ is gone... How do agents communicate now?
Is everyone using the same 3rd party chat app or something?
Communication was a big part of the game back when I was really active in the game...
And I've found it hard to stick with Niantic's Wizards Unite because you feel so absolutely cut off and alone in that game... it's more like Wizards Alone... Which is Not why I play multiplayer games.
So please tell me Ingress players have found a solution?!

3rd party apps dominate, mostly for op sec reasons imo. Faction chats are basically public since someone could very easily make a spy account and just monitor comms from Intel. People still use comms to say hi to each other, but nothing of substance.
Globally, telegram is popular. Locally, some use slack or discord.
Telegram, Slack, Smoke Signals, Discord. Depends on the community, ask your faction on Comms
Telegram seems to be the most used communication app now.
First of all, welcome back!
As for chat apps, definitely Telegram, like everyone else has said. Lots of global groups use it because it’s been around since early Ingress and it still works perfectly for the needs of groups.
In local groups I’ve seen Discord a lot, as well as Slack and a couple others.
In-game chat is not gone. What makes you say that it is? If you go to Activities in the scanner, there's even a tab called CHAT.
Correct, I misspoke; it's not exactly gone, but it's not the same functional IRC overlay from the original client. Agents don't seem to be using it for anything other than the occasional Hello. In the old chat I saw recruiting, organizing, tactical chat, etc., but now it's very empty and superficial.
@ArkFang Thanks for the welcome back. 🖖
As for Telegram, are there any popular channels besides NianticOfficial?
For most people, the discussion is a) Here, b) Reddit (if necessary) and b) in various chat programs.
However for the most part, to get into those groups requires you to reach out on COMM. The "Hangouts" part of the game is alive and well on newer platforms. Just got to find out what platform that is in the region.
Many people have weaponized public chat, reporting you to Niantic for harassment for saying 'hi' to them.
Additionally, with so many backpack accounts, you pretty much have to assume your local opponents are seeing anything you say on faction chat. 🙄 So, basically, don't use ingame chat except for the bare minimum. Get into the local Telegram/Slack/whatever group and chat there.
It's not like before because it's better now.
There are food chats, swag chats, cat chats, any number of global social groups to chat with each other. You'll find these after you get established on Telegram with your local groups.
There are also lots of news channels, be it Enlightened, Resistance, or xfac. Here are a few:
