For anyone else interested, here's a more detailed description about how to make 2000 fields as a solo endeavor, without using more than 40 portals, and without needing help or clearing from the opposing team. In my experience from EXO5 Controller, this took roughly 20 hours.
Find 16 portals in a rough line or convex arc; call the end portals A and B; you need the other 14 portals to all be on the same side of a link between A and B. A perfectly straight line of 15 plus one portal set slightly back from one end of it would do nicely, for instance.
Farm up many keys to all those portals. Link these 16 into 14 triangles, in such a way that all 16 portals are still on the outside of the structure.
Find another cluster of portals, maybe a ways away, that can link to all 16 portals in the structure. (The less jagged your structure ended up, the less it will constrain where this can be.)
Pick a random portal from this cluster (call it 1). Deploy it and link it to A and B (producing one field). Add an SBUL. Link it to whatever structure portal A and B are connected to, splitting the field for another two fields. Then throw the links to split the subfields and subsubfields. In total, you generate 29 fields by linking to all 16 portals from portal 1 in the right order.
Now flip portal 1 to break those links. Pick up any keys that dropped. Pick another random portal #2 from the cluster; deploy and SBUL. Link from #2 to all 16 portals for another 29 fields. Flip portal 2 and grab keys. Pick portal 3 and repeat. When you've been linking for an hour, you can go back and reuse portal 1 again (neutralizing it first).
Done this way, the task requires 69 SBUL and 69 flipcards of the opposing faction, plus good hackmods for the 16 portals. Many variations are possible. It may reduce tedium to break the task in quarters (you'll need to split your keyfarming of the 16 portals across 2-4 burnout periods anyway).
I noticed (but didn't use this) that if you do make the structure out if a straight line of 15 with the 16th set back a bit, there's an angle of possible locations for the numbered cluster where, after deploying portal A, the next portal for the split link is always the one closest to you and thus first in the queue. That would be very convenient.
Something very similar to this is presumably the way some teams of agents have helped individual agents to set levelling speed records.
Did something similar and got the Exo5 Medal in about six hours (not counting key farming which happened a few days before the challenge started). Used about 60 SBUL and 60 Jarvis viruses.
you know what happens? blue and green communities would need to keep each others fields up for the global count. This cooperation kills the spirit of the game.

so, will it be yet another cross faction event..(create X many fields globally together)
or can we finallly get back to ingress with some competition and rivalry. (get more fields then the other faction)
soonTM
Pretty keen for this event!!!!!! Would love more details so will help with planing and farming.....
Only three days to go. We need moar informations!
It's still early over in PST time. I'm sure they need to get folks into the office, through their morning stand up meetings, ect.
I'd guess a post from them either today or tomorrow midday-ish.
Any updates/details on this challenge?
Any updates please
yet another non-competetive event.
