    Obligatory sidetrack:

Sometimes a POI can be ineligible, but its sign CAN still be eligible. There is in my city, for example, a "generic business" tattoo parlour that could never be approved under current rules, BUT its 3D carved-and-gloriously-painted sign is gobsmackingly beautiful (and is a wayspot now).

A "sign" and a "sign for the thing" are not necessarily equivalent. Judge the sign on its own merit (historic, artistic, etc), and it would have its own entry in the "what is it" category selection.

Yet sometimes the "sign" is just a placeholder for the "thing", one of the most common examples is a city park. Many parks are nothing more than a pleasant bit of green space with landscaping and mass-produced unsubmissible benches. In that case the sign IS the wayspot, and does indeed represent the "thing".

Sure, if you actually apologize without someone calling you out on it, I’ll apologize for ever doubting you.

Trying to drag this back on topic... I'd like to see more non-eligible things in the 'what is it' list, so we can flag edits to non-eligible things. A few times I've been asked to find the best location or description for something that should never have been accepted, like a tree or a floating duck house in a lake. I could label the tree as a tree (which to me means the list can't be a list of just eligible categories), but not the duck house. Perhaps cover-all 'Unusual object' and 'Unusual object (dangerous or dangerous location)' categories might be useful?

  • In my area I get lots of easy rejects, and I don't see what the point would be to adding them to the 'what is it' category.

I get a fair share of obvious invalid candidates in my area. Recent examples: massage chairs in a mall, skill crane machines, gumball machines, equipment sheds, generic business advertisement signage...stuff that are easy 1*.

The 'What is it' is an optional section for Niantic to help curate the POIs that make it into their game...why would they be concerned about things that have no chance of making it in?
