Too many nominations with generic names, from Pokémon Go trainers

Hi I come with an approach that I bring from another thread.

For Pokémon GO trainers, they don't really care about the title that each “poketop” they request will carry. But all of us who play Ingress know that it is very important that a portal has a unique name. To make links (not planned) from a portal, quickly, it is very important to differentiate the target portals. The main way to differentiate them is by name.

But there is nothing worse than being in a hurry and having 3 objective portals that are called exactly the same, such as "playground" or "church."

This is really tedious, because the portal editions in my area take too long (they are approving editions of name that I requested in October 2018). And meanwhile, approved nominations and portals with generic names continue to multiply every day.

Niantic should place more emphasis on teaching PGO trainers to submit proposals with unique titles. Or find some way to improve the titles in "Wayfarer" BEFORE they are approved (such as the locations).

Oh this was a problem well before PoGO players got submissions.

  • Maybe yes.

But now the problem grew exponentially.

In my region there were few agents in + L10, and there really were not so many nominations. But now that many L40 trainers have joined, the problem has increased.

  • Edits have sped up greatly in recent weeks.

I have actually seen some of the basic or off topic titles and descriptions going up for edit and being corrected in wayfarer. I think nitpicking it and complaining is not going to help. If they have the evidence that it should be a waypoint knocking off a few stars is fair I would only reject if the title is a mile long or text for the nomination have words not allowed such as game references etc. I have seen some in my area have same time different pics and they exist in proper location it is probably better just to let small blemishes like this pass instead of getting 10 of the same submission from the park with 10 pending submissions. Minor text fixes are acceptable. I have had edits take less than a month from late december they are speeding up. I also got an attempt at an edit for a park that needs it they will probably try again when they realize it needs to be sent in through the in game edit feature and not waste a submission. Local community thinks it is a few players in our outskirts that aren't in online communities or looking for help on the wayfarer site it is a rural town.

An additional flaw with this requirement, despite that Wayfarer instructions explicitly state in an awkward spot in the online Help:

    Title Guidelines:

A Wayspot may not have an “official” title (i.e., fountains and statues without names), but we welcome creative titles to distinguish the nominated Wayspot from other similar Wayspots.

    "Creative titles" would include-but-not-be-limited-to:

    • puns
    • visual descriptions
    • humour in general

... aaaaand I'm an incorrigible punster. I've also kept some anecdotal track of my submissions, and while all of my pun-titled-submissions are now in the game, those always take longer in review and are MUCH more likely to require resubmission. Even those that visually describe the bit of architecture are prone to the same delays. One inoffensive joke even got flagged as abuse. ABUSE?!

But, on the bright side, the local players can much more easily distinguish between various baseball diamonds in my general playarea.

  • I had an example in Las Vegas when I lived there where every portal in a park was named:

    "Mission Hills Park: <name>"

Which meant that every portal read "Mission Hills P.." I made a pile of edits in 2016 to rename them to MH: <name> since one of the original submitters told me the reason they were named the same at the front was so that they sorted together. In recent months those edits have finally been processed, with only some of them getting renamed.

  • Everything is abuse to some people (on here).

I think my point was not understood. I just ask that Niantic put more emphasis on the nominators choosing unique titles / names.

I know that Niantic does say so in its recommendations, but people ignore it, they are not creative.

I never said it was abuse.

How difficult can it be to recommend that instead of "playground" be "Playground of Lincoln Park"? IT IS EASY.

They will all sort together by distance (most of them). I don't like this kind of naming, and abbreviated will hardly get approved in edits. I believe you have a better chance puting it backwards, like "<thing name> - Park Name".

Is more difficult than do a good job. People are generally lazy and lack effort. In my city, I have to edit the name of almost all portals that weren't created by me. I alone created over 50% of the portals of the city, against at least 30 lv40 (the local group have over 130 members). Some don't even try to submit.

Not really my region has mostly "Park Name" "Object" so "A" Park Baseball Field #1. "A" Park Baseball Field #2. "A" Park Playground. That has been standard for a while in my area as series. Just not everyone follows the same signing of names so we will get playground etc randomly in some areas from players submitting for their first time or a just starting.

This isnt new at all but in my place we usually have ''Playground -name street or park name-'' insteand of just playgrounds, however if you care that much just send a name edit submission

  • I have been doing it since July 2018. I sent editions of many portals. Only 3 editions of name have accepted me.

I am getting back edits 2-3 times a week on average now some are title and name changes others locations. the system is speeding up on edits. Long time edits are finally solving it did take 9 months to resolve some from 2019 we finally had 2017 and 2018 edits finish voting. I have had a few take 3-4 weeks come back this week. Even if it means it is in voting for a while eventually they come back.

  • Generic name. Really. Come on if it's a play area, it's a play area what's the point in trying to make it something else?

No doubt someone will start 1staring them for false name and description if they try to make them different. Then they would get reported for abuse of the system or something stupid.

And besides who says its pogo players how do u know it's not ingress???

When the nominations are approved, it says "unknown" when it corresponds to Pokémon GO users.

GO Trainers don't care, they don't play with keys.

I do not say to invent false names. I only ask that it be emphasized that they differ in unique names. As I exemplified before, "playground" is not the same as "playground of Lincoln Park." This last name is more specific and there is no abuse.

  • But it's not a rule just something you would like to happen yet they are doing nothing wrong so what's the problem?

  • PoGo trainers do care about unique names (or should care) as they often co-ordinate to meet at a particular gym for a raid, which needs teamwork. So meeting at "King George Postbox" could be very ambiguous in my area. So I agree the submission process should put emphasis on an interesting and unique name.

  • I'd rather a simple title over "Playground at BlahBlah Park Built by Great Leader John Doe Who Was a Great Mayor of Cityville For 25 Years"

These description length titles are coming up more here than boring simple ones.

  • You DON'T WANT to understand.

I'm saying that generic names don't help gameplay in Ingress (and neither in Pokémon Go). There is a margin of error linking to wrong portals.

I DIDN'T say they violate rules and don't commit abuse.

"Playground at BlahBlah" is enough... Let's not go to the other extreme. Excessively long names are also useless for gameplay.

My summary with this thread is: you have to know how to be concise.

  • And they usually provide a Google Maps link which negates the need for unique names.

the whole 'lets blame everything on pogo players even though its been happening forever' thing is getting really old now, its time to stop

I always submit postboxes with the street name in the title like 'GR Postbox - Ingress Lane' and I always edit any that I see without that format. Would be good if everyone could spare a few edits and do the same when possible.

  • I think I do understand I just dont particularly care. Its a play area job done. If pogo players want to have problems with meeting up it's there choice, there is nothing wrong with what they are doing. It doesn't affect my ingress playing one bit when I have 20 king George post boxes. Just because you personally dont like it dont think we should all jump on the let's try to force other people to do what we want bandwagon. That's how opr used to operate and that's gone now with pogo players doing the majority of reviewing.
