Yeah I've had multiple friends that spoof test it, and both Google fit and Strava give them no credit for moving around via joystick. I've also manually driven back roads below 20km/hr to see if I get distance that way, and no it doesn't work either. I only get AS credit while walking around work or if I go for a bike ride/kayak.
I'm 95% certain it relies on the pedometer function in smart phones for the primary recording and uses GPS tracking to validate.
I routinely break the 50km barrier from 1 or 2 25-30km bike rides and a week of work (can't use phones while in the field so it just sits in the pocket).
Don't be so easy to dismiss spoofers/cheaters able to falsify their walking activity. I am aware of a Software (2 apps) AND a Hardware (that you can buy on eBay easily) to give you steps to Google Fit/Apple Health thingy thus game like PoGo believing you actually had a walk/run.
Everyone here talking about whether trekker should be tracked with adventure sync or not because they want trekker to be earned playing ingress, yet nobody has mentioned that you need the screen ON for that, and that causes burn in (unless I missed a comment). I just want to be able to pocket my phone with the screen off and get credit towards my walking!
Am I the only one who's already had this stupid circle eat into a phone screen? I had redacted burn into four 😅

Perfect way to obtain "caches" to unlock!
Small tasks/missions like "create a control field" or "hack 10 portals" etc.
Maaan I really hope they do something like that soon because hacking and linking portals is only so much fun after so many years lol.

That's why I feel it's a valid suggestion.

There are already apps out there for PoGo that can "walk" your Google Fit (basically editing the data) instantly so that your eggs tick over.
You might want to test them yourself, adding info into Google fit doesn't register.
i got sent today twice same emails "Agent mortuus: Exclusive Passcode and New Ingress Events
"....
Apparently they've gotten even more ridiculous:
I hope Niantic and Google can do something to stop it works. Hate when users cheating.
Given you say that about everything good and bad, it's now become a meaningless line.

@SmurfHunterXMA Leaving the screen on also guzzles battery like the app has just crawled across the desert and found an oasis.
You're bumping a 18 month old discussion...
I didn't realize the age when someone sent me the thread originally lol
Stupid forum keeps double posting and won't let me delete
