It was a showstopper UI ‘feature’ for at least one founder player.
Prime is so dark and the lines so narrow that they had to look really closely at the screen to even play and the flames would pop up spontaneously and blind them.
They were of no tactical use, just sucked performance and got in the way.
Like the chromatic aberration filter.
Good riddance to bad ideas.
Now, fixing the random positioning of the carousel would be a nice next step.
While the flame was kind of pretty, after a while it felt more or less just as a distractive clutter so I can't say I miss it personally.
Nothing against having this kind of features (e.g. the late fake chromatic aberration) as something that can be optionally enabled by anyone who wants them, but for day-to-day playing I'd personally rather have a clean user interface with less distractions.
The game feels empty without it, portals no longer feel like the unique XM hotspots they are.
The irony here is the number of people complaining about how it covers up too much of the screen, well Niantic added a new feature to their other game, which does this, even worse.
Bring back the the portal flame effect. It was transparent, therefore did not affect gameplay.
With it gone, it HAS affected gameplay by making the game feel much more dull.
If something suddenly flashes on my screen then it has to mean something in gameplay (like a portal was neutralized). If these are just random flashes made to please someone's eye, and they don't need real attention, they're unnecessary because they draw attention without any justification.
It was transparent, therefore did not affect gameplay.
Except that it wasn't, and it did. The portal flare expanded the hitbox of the portal so you couldn't click on things behind it without rotating, and the random nature meant you couldn't predict when it would happen. Also, given that everything was the same transparency, it was essentially opaque.
It looks like the flame is gone from the map. Good job. Now you just have to work on removing it from the recharge screen and the deploy screen. Its very bright. Please fix this @NianticBrian
It seems flames are not actually gone 100%,only 99%.Wnen you're exiting out of Portal menu and there are Portals near, sometimes you can see some "flame-without-photo" or oval thing on that distant Portals. It happens rarely.
I was excited to read that the portal flames were being removed in the latest update. It appears instead that the portal pictures were removed and the flames remain, and even seem increased!
What I would like to see is the portal pictures brought back and maybe the portal flame to pop up only on the portal closest to you with the picture. Maybe the flame could be a bit more brief. It could be used to get your bearing to the nearest portal in a dense portal area.
Maybe even the next closest portal could also fade in the picture and have a bit less flames than the closest. It's a cool effect, there is just too much. Especially after the latest update.
I'm fine with the portal flames and picture on the portal detail screen. It's just to much flames on the general scanner screen.

Hahahahahahaahaha
So despite telling everyone how horrible every thing is, we finally found the thing you like... and Niantic REMOVED IT.
Oh the irony...
I hate the flame. Remove it completely. It's extra useless distraction filling my screen and using my processing power to do it.
No problem for agents with premium device. I have Samsung Galaxy S10+
I hated the flame, glad its gone.

Thank God that the flame is gone.
Now we can focus on real ways to make the portals more visible.

Note: flames are not gone; they're just gone from the map screen. Good.
Uhm, yeah, exactly like the update log said?
Yes, like the update log said. However, some players have not understood the nuance in the wording.

Glad to see them removed.
Why not have it as an optional feature?
Everything should be optional, also selecting the low graphic mode that some old phones had with prime.
I want to be able to select low graphics even if i had a new phone to allow me to play faster.
It was transparent, therefore did not affect gameplay.

And yet, not everyone has that device.

It could be a setting on the menu. I really don’t love but also don’t hate it.

In a dense area it hides other portals - you don't want it.
