Feature suggestion: key cruncher

I've seen a few people arguing that the anchors of BAFs are too hard to get, and the fields interfere with game play.

Seems to me like that is the reason to make a BAF, but perhaps the complaints are valid. I dont really care, because prime is lame.

All the same, it seems like the developers chose to add new features, rather than fix known issues, so...

The idea of making bigger fields decay faster is clearly unpopular. What we need instead is a way for those who complain to break down the big fields they cant destroy... but in a way that still encourages going outside, and interacting with people.

I suggest a key cruncher. If you like the idea, but not the name, we could change things.

Like XMP and ultra strikes, the key cruncher is a weapon. Unlike those other weapons, the key cruncher does not need the user to be near a portal.

Opting to use a key cruncher will open the key inventory. You then target a key, the key cruncher removes the key from your inventory, and deals some damage to the portal that the key represents.

I'm not designing the game. Someone else will need to decide how much damage is fair. I'd imagine something around the ballpark of a reverse recharge. Could it target your own portals? Seems like a bad idea, but maybe.

Cons: totally changes rules. One more thing to debug, when nothing gets debugged.

Pros: totally changes the rules. You can please one person at the expense of millions of other players. Requires a key: more reason for players to buy keylockers. Might make the six-locker gang even more loyal to the game. Actually gives players more reason to farm distant portals. Might encourage buying heat sinks and multi hacks. Makes defending distant anchors important. Might encourage buying ADA, Jarvis, shields, and power cubes.

So this allows someone to farm a bunch of keys from an anchor, then duplicate a couple dozen of them, then spread them across couple dozen people, and have them simultaneously press a button from anywhere to destroy a megafield. At the same time, some other couple dozen people might have driven hundreds of kilometers and spent much money to get to the anchors one of which is being destroyed, or to clear the crosslinks that stood in a way for that megafield. And, to recreate the field, they must go there again whereas the people with key crunchers may duplicate the keys happily. Doesn't seem quite fair.

  • The linking crew could use key crunchers to clear crosslinks in the same way that the enemy could destroy BAFs. Only difference is you dont know which keys to farm in order to destroy a BAF that hasn't been made.

But yes. It would completely change the style of the game, and that is likely to upset a lit of old time players.
