[Suggestion] Title and description edits should be automatically accepted - flagged if abusive
One of the most common complaints from the communities I'm involved in is the time edits take. One of the reasons is title/description edits that clutter the queue.
In my opinion, titles and description edits should be automatically accepted if requested from > L12 agents. Add a swear word filter if necessary but they should be taken in good faith. If a > L12 agent decides to take the wrong route, add a 'report abusive edit' option and act on these behaviours. Keep a version history of the portal and find the agent who decided to vandalise the title/description.
The number of legitimate edits to correct a simple typo is absurd. These corrections are welcome but they should be handled separately.
Could that be possible?

It seems that root of the problem is that reviewers are receiving edit requests only from a small distance (may be 100 km, may be less) from their physical position. So many areas are simply not covered by sufficient number of reviewers. This approach is indeed questionable - although it can have some sense with location edits, it's definitely bad for simple edits like typos in titles and descriptions.
No thanks. There's constant tug of war about portal language in my region, because this is a bilingual area. If it were automatic, those would flip daily.
So, in your case, it's even worse. You get daily requests in WF for title/description edits, right? Seems the end result is even worse than letting these changes to be done/flagged by agents.
The idea is to remove from the wf/queue entries that can be done if request by L12 or higher. That would ease up the queue for everyone.
Nah, the other language is in minority, so the edits tend to get quickly rejected. Whereas if it were automatic, the titles would flip at a confusing frequency. Not to mention that both languages are official, so it's not really something that could be flagged as abuse either way.
The problem isn't that these edits "clog up the queue" but that there isn't enough reviewers in some areas to get these processed in a timely manner. A nomination will get reviewed nation wide, but an edit only goes out to the scoring cell in which it was made.
Is it no possible to get to an agreement and have both? Whey can't people just get along? :-)
But you'd trim the number of edits in the queue, even for the area. Letting reviewers (the few residents and the others that pass by) to focus on location edits only.
That's not going to help the overall problem of there simply not enough reviewers in a particular area for portal edits to get approved. Artificially shortening the queue doesn't mean that things will get approved faster.
Definitely, but in my view, it does help on areas where there are plenty of reviewers but the queue is overwhelming such as in big cities. Edit requests there are taking 4-6 months, at least. It's a matter of assigning priority to what's really important. If you feel a potal title should be capitalized it doesn't make sense that you have to wait 4-6 months to get it done.
Solving the lack of reviewers in some areas is a different topic which my idea doesn't address.
Just came across an example:
Of -> of
This is a perfect example. The agent is probably waiting for this change for weeks/months. It's senseless.
The correct and long term solution would be to expand the pool of reviewers, either by allowing PoGo players to review in Wayfarer (which will eventually happen), expand the region on which edits are reviewed to match those of nominations, or a combination of both. Contrary to your view point, edits aren't "clogging up" the queue. They aren't holding up other things from going through, so removing them isn't going to speed anything up.
It's a matter of being efficient. Minor edits such as the ones I are a waste of our time as reviweres (hence the fact they don't count against upgrades). Taking them off would ease up the queue which, in some extent, is clogged with everything - these edits included.
Of course the solution is just have more reviewers. What if that isn't possible? What if in remote locations there are not enough L40 PoGo players. should we still stay weeks or months for a capitalization of a title?
It's a matter of focusing our efforts in what requires a deep analysis such as new candidates and move requests. All the rest should be handled by a safe harbour policy. Pretty much what Wikipedia does with minor edits. They're OK'ed automatically but you can always report them back.
Only waiting 4-6 months? That sounds like a dream! 1.5 years and counting over here (in a state capital with a population of 2 million).
Whatever helps to improve the situation - besides the 'mother of all solution' which is to increase the number of reviewers. Removing the minor edits should, at least, improve the flow of the requests.
This would likely cause too much overhead for Niantic.
Unless things have changed, every key of a portal contains its name and location (also the reason why you can sort by those and not other properties)
Having edits approved automatically every time someone L12+ does them, means that EVERY SINGLE KEY of that portal needs to be updated aswell.
From a time/money perspective, you would want to limit that occuring.
Interesting feedback. How about limit edits for 14 days?
Not sure that would change anything.
The entire purpose of Wayfarer doing edits, is that the decision which is best is done by random people.
Not a single person who believes his text is better than that of someone else
Today's method:
A submitter requests a title edit.
The edit is reviewed by X reviewers and is approved/rejected.
As we know, this could take weeks/months/years.
The proposed model could be.
An > L12 agent performs the title edit which is immediately approved (safe harbour policy). Titles/Descriptions may only be changed once per 14 days (or more).
Other agents with access to the Portal can flag the last edit as abusive. Niantic deals with that like they do with reports today.
This will take out minor edits from the queue and get these going letting Niantic doing their police work in investigating abusive behaviours.
Just imagine having any Wikipedia edit having to be approved by X editors before going live. They're willing to take the risk.
Let's take these out of our way...
That would be great, if there was only 1 correct title.
But the reality is that multiple titles can be equally correct.
Then it's just a back and forth every 2 weeks until someone gives up.
Which they do. In abusive situations, titles/description would be locked - pretty much like Wikipedia.
Most of these edits only take a few seconds. If they count as agreements, I'm happy to do them.
I think regardless, the current edit system does not work as intended. Edits take FAR too long to be approved, in my area alone edits take years.
@s3w2 your intention is good, but it'll never happen. The example from @Zaltys about back and forth changes would just result in constant back and forth between bickering players, whether it's a language issue or not.
Childish behavior is inevitable, even among the group of players who have <insert any qualifier you come up with here>
They don't.
Edits would be locked because abuse. Again, like in Wikipedia. Let Niantic decide which version suits their game best. Solved.
I'm pretty sure they do. Agreement points for upgrades increment faster than badge points.
Well that is a bummer.
If 2 or more players edit a portal back and forth with correct descriptions that they all feel are correct, there's nothing to flag as abuse.
Maybe add a minimal set of requirements, such as 10 accepted portal submissions and at least a 2:1 accepted to rejected ratio?
