[Bug Report] [Bug] Speed Lock on Steroids
Several days ago I hacked a portal, then traveled about 30 miles at freeway speeds, then tried to hack again when I got back home. The Prime scanner would not allow me to take any actions at all. I couldn't recharge, I couldn't hack, I couldn't do anything other than view portals. Just as if I were speed locked in Redacted.
I switched to Redacted and everything worked exactly as it should. Switched back to Prime, still nothing would work. I tried restarting the app and restarting the phone. Still the same results.
The problem did go away on its own, however, after about 20 minutes of being in one location.
I thought it might be an iOS issue but a fellow agent had the exact same thing happen to him on an Android device just last night.
Any idea what might be causing this and what the resolution might be?

did u have prime running while u were driving or ?
I've been told by support that putting the app in the background will **** up its measurements. Apparently, it takes timestamps and location whenever it comes out of memory, and because it was momentarily at the previous location, it measures the speed you move from pre-background to post-background as instantaneous, which locks you.
If you shut down the app before moving, and then restart when you arrive, this is not a problem. If you keep the app open, generally you're going to be safe with very little speedlock.
It's a horrible system. Bad implementation. It should continue measuring time and location at all times if the app is in background as well as primary. The way we play this game demands it. Otherwise, a new implementation of speed limits/locks needs to be developed.
I think at the moment the whole prime speedlock code is a joke. It's not behaving any way useful and should be disabled until someone gets that fixed. But seems noone pulled the plug on that broken code because maybe someone could benefit in strange ways from it?
Remove this code... Its preventing us doing our job...
I travel a lot on trams, buses (not as a driver), and this is good time to hack and build portals along a line (or at stops), which is now not possible since yesterdays version (from 25.9.).
At least on HPWU when they notice you are moving at higher speed you can confirm you are not driving, so that speed lock can be disabled...
And if you are Bikegressing, then you have the same problem...
Unfortunately your best bet is to either keep Prime running in the foreground or **** the app entirely and then restart at your destination. Otherwise it will treat your change of location like an instant jump and lock you out. It's very buggy and Andrew has acknowledged that it needs work. Just a shame it's in such a bad state right now.
Device: Samsung 10
OS: Android 9
App Version: 2.32.2-2101f14c
Even restarting the app on Android does not mitigate the issue. I have a video from this morning that I captured after getting off a 45 minute train ride (and having to restart the app because it had crashed) that shows Prime spitting out a "portal not in range" error, followed by two "Scanner communication error (1)" errors.
Any chance that ANYONE from Niantic could actually acknowledge the receipt of notification of an issue in this forum!? It's seeming like a massive blackhole at the moment which is MASSIVELY concerning given that there is no fallback in FOUR (4) days time.
The worst bug of all right now for me is the sorting of the keys. There is no sorting of the keys at all. There all mixed up. Please fix this. Is anyone else have this problem???
@canon07 It happens to me all the time. The only fix to that problem is to shut down the program all together. Do not leave if running in the background. When you leave portal A and get to portal B and you bring the app back up to the foreground the software thinks you went from portal A to portal B within 1 second and it puts you in a speed lock. If you know you are gonna drive any distance to the next portal shut it down all together.
That's only been driving me nuts for the last 3 months... some of the bugs on here (including the speedlock issue) have been present since beta.
Speed Lock is killing the game for us! My Husband and I both play in the outskirts and all the driving forces us into speed lock. No matter how long we drive at highway speeds we should not have to keep restarting Prime! Niantic, you guys are smarter than this! We only have 4 days until Redacted dies. You should make this a priority to fix because you KNOW it is an issue, and it is IMPORTANT to the strategy of the game! Precious time is wasted trying to get Prime to load and be used at strategic portals, most of which are in the outskirts of high cell service areas. Thousands of MUs and OPS are determined by the speed at which Agents can link, block, destroy, and create portals! Don't slow us down or you will lose your veteran players!
What? This is a speedlock problem? I have multiple problems with the prime with exactly what you described above. Oh god! The developer does not test the software.......
This is still a huge problem with prime, I have a repeatable field with anchors approximately 25km apart, when traveling at freeway speeds from anchor to anchor if I do not keep prime up in the foreground, it will hit the speed lock of doom reporting either a blank error, some gibbrish message or the scanner communication error if I have to fire on the next anchor before capping it. As a work around I'm going to start packing a Wifi hotspotted phone for Intel / external comms as checking both can put Prime into background and trigger this bug. Just disable this until you can reasonably resolve, it's not like it blocks spoofers anyway, I'm not entirely sure why we have speed cap at all at this point or set it up like Pogo to drop immediately upon stopping, with no hangover.
I was sitting on a bench in a playground, watching my daughter. I hacked a portal. I put prime in the background for about a minute. I switched back and I was speedlocked. I didn't walk or drive anywhere, I was firmly planted on that bench the entire time.
In my opinion this issue is the #1 bug i Prime. Many more people turn of screen i Prime between portals (due to heavy battery usage compared to Redacted), so this is a real deal-breaker.
please fix this issue @NianticBrian
this is Issue #487 since 2.13.1 version app.
Sigh. I had a long post in here but somehow when I hit save, it disappeared. I don't really feel like retyping what I entered. So, needless to say, please fix this.
Please fix this ASAP!!
Niantic, you have made more than one game. Would you, or would you NOT like to have people playing more than one of them? This speedlock doesn't even effectively block spoofers, however it makes it IMPOSSIBLE to multi-task and play multiple games! My sister and I like to walk around and play both Pogo and Ingress. I have been very much enjoying Ingress, but I can't get her to enjoy the game at all. The main issue? Every single time she goes to check on anything else and then comes back she has to wait minutes at a time before she can even play!! What is the most boring game imaginable? Standing around staring at your screen, waiting and wishing you could play when you can't. ****, fix this, NOW. If you can't get it to work in a sensible fashion, turn it off.
Right now, for the last 24 hours straight, I have heard nothing but complaints about prime in my communities. Over half of those complaints were directly related to this speedlock issue and most of the players didn't even know what the bug was, they just said "Prime is broken" and then just quit.

Part of this issue could be mitigated with better error reporting. The system knows what the problem is as it displays either an empty error message. This is an intended feature. Long time Ingress players know what the empty error message means because we have experience. A new user won't. They'll just assume it's an error in the game. They won't understand, are likely become frustrated and are less likely to return.
A unified, comprehensive communication system is critical to the uptake and longevity of the player base.
This speed lock issue should just be deleted.
This has become the most annoying message. To restart the App it takes an avg of 2.5 minutes to confirm I've logged on.
