Does Portal need to be permanent in very long term perspective?

The question is actually not about in-game stuff but more about the story

I mean there are definitely long lasting objects in real world like temples, churches and monuments built in places where portals are located.

But even they may disappear.

As for Ingress Portals do the story explain if Portals exist forever? Or there is a chance for the new portal to appear (think so) and for an existing portal to decay (less probable but why not)?

The storyline does not address the fact that portals seem to come and go. It's really a point that Resistance storyline players should be hammering on (because it undermines the Enlightened narrative) but there aren't many Resistance storyline players.

I may be wrong but I think that the story has alluded to... places with a strong XM presence cause humanity to make things at those particular places.

I think that also helps some of the narrative around durable portals from the beginning of the game that probably shouldn't still be portals.

  • You are correct, in the animation it was explained that humans are drawn naturally to large collections of XM which are typically due to portals, they then show various large man made landmarks and shrines that have portals present whilst explaining this fact. Some of these landmarks and shrines appeared quite old and still had portals present despite the lack of presence of actual people.

  • If I understand the causation correctly, humans are drawn to build things at Portals; Portals are not called into being by buildings/statues/monuments. So it is entirely possible that Portals are eternal.

Agree. My point here is to know if such a situation is possible:

    1. Portal appeared ages ago -> ancient people built a shrine -> portal disappeared due to any reason
    2. Portal appeared years ago -> modern artist created some installation or graffiti there -> portal disappeared
    3. Actually if portal can appear again for situations 1 and\or 2. Not because of people created something but for its own
  • By the lore, Portals can neither be created or destroyed; they were only opened wider by Epiphany Night.

I suppose that means when Niantic removes a Portal, they're not destroying it, just reducing it back to its original size. Enough XM will still leak through to inspire people, but not enough to power a Scanner or create items.

You can control where and when the great idea of humanity will be inspired if you know where to (and where not to) build a house.

  • The question is not "How long is temporary?". It's "can it be removed easily". An unaffixed statue that has been in place for 3 years is still "temporary" because it could be removed at any time. Churches aren't generally knocked down without a lot of warning.

  • IIRC, portals are not the objects. Objects are built on portals. When we submit candidates in OPR, we "discover" new portals.

And when objects dissapear, the lore says that it was because the portal disappared which caused the object on top to fall into decay.

So portal can disappear. Another idea is object on top of it disappears because of its own but later people can build something else there
