Ingress Code Checker

@RedSoloCup your AMA answered a question about checking codes, and how you didn't think it would happen, because of brute force attempts. What if you could tie it to CMU purchases? I have dozens of cards that I would like to either sell, trade, or hand out as prizes at First Saturdays, but I don't know if they have been redeemed. I am sure there are many people like me. I would be willing to pay up to $1 worth of CMU (maybe more) to check codes.

I think if you tie the code checker to an account, and charge a code check fee, and added some constraints about the code checking (like having to supply what the code is supposed to be), you could make it work.

I too would very much like to see a code checker. Surely there has to be a way to put metrics around it; make it so that only accounts over a certain level can use it, limit the number of requests they can send against it, etc. Hell, make it a Recursion benefit. Andrew's stated objection about people brute-forcing codes through and using multiple accounts should be able to be easily mitigated by account verification and serious rate limiting.

Maybe Niantic just doesn't to make it easier to resell codes.

  • Krug said they dont want it brute forceable. They could implement controls to stop it. I.e 3 invalid passwords you get locked out. Then to prevent people trying twice then using one of the valid codes out there, say you get 10 out of 20 wrong you also get locked out of the feature, or something like that.

At the end of the day , it's a lot of dev time, and money, for no monetary reward for them, and since prime is still a mess the debs have better things to spend their time on.

I can see why they dont want to do it, though it would be a nice feature to have.
