Portal Submission not possible on low bandwidth

Summary of issue: Portal Submissions time out on low bandwidth

Device: Huawei P smart

OS: 8.0.0

App Version (Settings > Scroll to the bottom):2.27.3

Hi,

I guess this is already known but I haven't found a real thread to vote on.

I'm usually on low bandwidth (limited 4G line, limited DSL line with 0,3 Mbit). If I try to submit a new portal I get a timeout during the last step. If I shrink the taken pictures in quality (either resize or lower the jpg quality via the built-in app) the submission is accepted.

So niantic, please as a first measure increase the upload timeout in the app. And a final solution should be something to upload the submissions in the background, maybe even triggerable if you are on a convenient connection to do so (i.e. landline or similar).

Yes, I can confirm that. In my view is that the problem is that Prime does not compress portal photos. Scanner redacted make or make photos with not high quality.

The way I see it to make photos with low quality using camera application and after that use existing photo to submit portal.

Same here. I'm unable to submit normally on Prime, whereas Redacted works fine.

Prime always times out on photo upload, if I'm on mobile connection. And no, it has nothing to do with the connection quality: it times out even with full four bar connection. My phone company has a limit on outgoing connections, and it seems that it's just not fast enough to handle 7MP photos within the time limit.

  • Same here. One of my biggest worries about losing Redacted.

Take the pictures. Mark the location. Go to nearby wi-fi spot within 25km and do the submission.

    Problem solved.

Problem not solved. 25km is nothing around here. Most of the portals I'm trying to submit are over 50km from nearest accessible wifi.

Part of the issue is that Prime does not cache submissions and upload them in the background like Redacted does. Ninatic is aware of the issue, but their priories are currently elsewhere. And there is also the fact that you are sending two high-quality images instead of one low-quality rescaled image. If you want to improve throughput a bit, my advice is set your image resolution down to 2 or 3 megapixels (MP). If you default photo app can't do that, use a third-party app like Open Camera on Android, that will. Remember that a 1920x1080 picture is just 2.07MP, so setting the photo resolution down that low shouldn't be a problem.

On a side note, Open Camera has a nice little feature called auto-level that will correct for camera tilt. This is real nice since I have a bad habit of tilting the camera slightly counter-clockwise, which become very noticeable when I'm taking photos of buildings.
