Soft ban issues

Summary of issue: Soft bans

Device: Huawei P smart (but pretty much any)

OS: Android 8.0.0 (dito, pretty much any)

App Version (Settings > Scroll to the bottom): 2.27.2 (and earlier)

In pokemon go we have so-called soft bans. I.e. if my GPS bails out and I get teleported to the other end of the city, try to spin a stop there, and get teleported back to real position I need to wait a certain time until spinning a stop works again. Annoying, but the workaround is to not click on anything as long as the GPS is trying to fix the position.

The same happens in ingress prime, but with added issues: It automatically collects XM and this is counted as an interaction. So if my GPS bails out I'm lost with a non-working scanner for the next 10 or so minutes. This even happens if I lock my phone on one location, drive to another one, open up prime: It first shows me on the old position (even captures some XM from this), as the GPS kicks in it updates me to the new position - and lets me wait another few minutes until I can interact.

Niantic, please ignore these automatic interactions for the so-called softbans. This is not pokemon where I need to interact to trigger this. And yes, this is something in prime from the early versions.

And yes, this happens during normal gameplay. Think as an extreme of an ICE train driving 300 km/h, Hack on the first train station. Do the same an hour later but some 100 km away and you're screwed the next few hours since prime thinks you teleported from one station to the other. In a lower level this also happens if I drive by car (even having the app closed!).

This is usually called speedlock. Soft bans have traditionally been somethings else, and very rare in recent years.

  • This sounds similar to the discussion in the "Remove Artificial Speedlock" thread. I am having similar issues and irritations with this..

... not really. But there are phones that disable the GPS receiver if the display is locked. And this seems to be triggering the issues in prime.

And yes, in pokemon this is usually called 'softban'. Since this behaviour is not around in redacted I thought that should be called the same since it has the same code base. The speedlock in redacted works different as far as I know. And I never had any issues with that on the same phone.
