I’d say there are actual uses for overclocking. Being able to roll up to an L8 portal and burn it out in less than a minute (no hack mods, just shields) and get all that gear or keys is quite an advantage. Useless isn’t accurate, but also, scanning is a waste and it sucks that Niantic has tried to lure agents into doing their work with the “promise” of quick gear/keys.
I didn't notice anything different from the hack output nor it being faster. Trying to get past the scanning part and doing something with some box took way too much time. It didn't make any sense. What does it have anything to do with making fields and capturing mind units? Why is this what the game is all about now? I was left confused.
Lots of bad VPS portals out there too. There is one in a local park. The POI is a park sign. The scan data? The ground. No wonder I couldn't get it to calibrate when I tried it. Thus leading to a bad outcome and someone who doesn't bother to OC portals. Another park. Same thing. Since there is no Scout Controller points on the portal, its obvious as to where the scans came from (pogo).
I'm by no means a fan of all this, was just offering a counterpoint to the argument that it's useless or that there is no benefit. That being said, I've come across plenty of those as well. Even worse that you can't see the scan data anywhere but a web browser, so even if you're at a VPS enabled portal, but can't seem to calibrate, you won't figure it out until some hours later when you're back home.
@ZeroHecksGiven I have a counter-argument to this: Overclock may be useful to the game but AR isn't, except that Niantic has artificially made it so. They could have just as easily implemented overclocking by requiring a ten-glyph sequence or something like that, but they implemented it to push the AR agenda into a game where AR really isn't relevant.
Could of just added a glyph to it. 6 Glyphs would be much harder than 5. But much easier than trying to figure out what to scan, then what the squiggly lines mean if you can even calibrate it.
Then we'd all have to learn new glyph sequences. And I might even actually have to learn all of the names. I'm guessing zig-zag and right and left tear aren't actually glyph names.
I don't disagree at all, something I eluded to in my comment at the top of the page... I did most of the chronos medal with overclocking, but won't likely do much of it moving forward. Heck, I barely play the game anymore at all

Keep. In mind that Ingress is the only game that is using VPS in a way that has been envisioned.
Overclock might not be the best option, but for now it proves the technology works, mostly.
I can think of a few other ways VPS would be way more beneficial to Ingress.
I like doing Overclock from time to time, but most of the time I don't, because there isn't any other VPS wayspots around, or I am so full on gear that it is pointless.
As for MFLA, that I can get behind and support it, and hopefully after this event there is a plethora of data for them to go through and analyse.
The VPS Activate button still works, you just have to repeatedly attempt it over and over, over time. Once the event is over, hopefully it’ll go back to always working...until the app actually is retired like Niantic said it would be.
I hate to say it but you're blind or not using a calibrated portal.
You are able to burnout a portal within 10 minutes with 4 overclock hacks. More productive than fracker hacking. I can do x16 hacks, acquire a lot of mods, and resos within the 10 minutes.
The issue really comes down to the technology if there's anything to add with it. They really seem to do this "proof of concept" to release after 2 years of messing around with it. It's at least got me playing Ingress more overall but it's definitely limited.
The big issue is it seems any device can overclock portals...which makes me even wonder the ability to scan defecit.
It kept failing calibration and I'm not sure how to get it to pass or even what that means. I scanned the portal like it says but nothing. It just felt like regular hacking with a weird box for the glyph. I guess I never got to experience the overclock hacking.
Best way to figure out what to scan is to look at the Lightship website, at the poi in question, and check what the scan shows. A local one in the park, the POI is a Park sign. What was scanned? The ground. Bright green grass. Can't calibrate it. I don't care to stand there scanning it in 32F/0C temps, so **** it. The problem is, there are a lot of portals like that. There is another one in that park, a pavilion. Guess what the scan shows? The ground/concrete of the pad for the pavilion. There are 8 VPS portals in this park. Only 3 of them will calibrate. It's a useless feature if most of the VPS portals are all junk scans of the ground.
It was just easier to drive around, capture portals, over and over and over again for Chronos. As usual, the DB of stuff, is low quality crapola.

VRHS + VRMH on anchor. 27 - 30 keys in 4 minutes.

If you live in a drive preferred box. In a big city with great public transportation, it's still insane.

Or maybe just the ability to manually rotate the cube on the screen instead of making us walk in circles like idiots and save time?
You still have to put it on the real world, tought. I think it takes the best part of both dimensions.
it takes time because you are not used to overclock, like normal glyph for people when they were added.
For the speed, with VRMH + VRSH instead of hacks 16x each 54sec you just do 4x OC (=4hacks for each OC) each 54sec.
so instead of spending ~13min you have the 16 hacks in 3min

Best thing is to not work for free. Stop scanning entirely.
Close your account and you will no longer be providing Niantic any data.
Like it or not I'll be here til the bitter end.
One scan = five more minutes of ingress
Get going!
Okay, so Chronos is over and it was mentioned in the document that
PxB: Testing is one thing, Akira. You’re talking about... moving an entire living reality into... some new, completely unknown time and place.
as well as doing things that were reality breaking but we don’t seem to have had any consequences/outcome from it as yet. What are we expecting?
same with last years anomalies wasnt something supposed to happen like red will start field?
I know they mentioned that Machina could evolve
but not sure if it’s linked to the Anomaly ending.
Maybe whatever happens with the story will start with the Anomaly on 17th February
It is important to note here about Machina making fields.
It isn't as simple as many people think, there is a lot of moving parts that need to be added or upgraded, such as the scoreboard.
The scoreboard hasn't really been updated to reward factions for winning septiycles since 2013, only a couple minor updates.
The scoreboard would need a complete refresh to show both Machina fields, and Battle Beacon Victories.
I know Chiaki was championing Battle Beacons to be more than what they do currently, even hinted at adding the victories to the Septiycle.
I have raised both of these. Adding Machina scores and Battle Beacon victories to in a (rather extensive) recent letter I wrote to @NianticThia
Although I would love to see Machina fielding, there is a heap of other work that needs doing first which is more important.
It is up to @NianticBrian how to prioritise the development teams production schedule.
Sounds like alot dev work will be needed doing all that, question is will niantic devote resources for that 🤔
where is this letter u speak of?
Best of luck to you on that, @Grogyan
It was a private letter
but i want see it
and im done
We still have 3 weeks left.
Plenty of time to get silver
How'd that work out for you?
