New Wayspots coming to India

PkmnTrainerJPkmnTrainerJ ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello Explorers,

The Wayfarer Team, along with the rest of Niantic are incredibly invested in ensuring a good Niantic experience for all through the growth of our map. To do so, we will be adding additional Wayspots in India in the upcoming weeks.

These Wayspots will begin to show up on our map as soon as November 1, 2023 and added in waves in the weeks to come. While these Wayspots won’t contain images, they will contain a Pokéstop image in Pokémon GO and a blank image in all other games in which they sync to while photos are contributed to these Wayspots. We are excited to see our Explorers in India add their photos and show us their local community through Wayspot photo contributions. As with our previous Wayspot additions, we took your feedback about quality into consideration and audited these Wayspots to ensure that they meet our criteria. If you come across a Wayspot that you feel infringes our Wayfarer criteria, please report it through the appropriate reporting processes.

While all Wayspots will be added to our Niantic map, it is still left to each game's inclusion rules to determine which Wayspots will make it into their games.

I don’t know how often Agents from India check the Wayfarer forums, but wanted to share to give a heads up to any photoless Portals that appear.

  • .... I think the bigger question would be, where are these new POI sourced from? Is it another FourSquare import?

  • PkmnTrainerJPkmnTrainerJ ✭✭✭✭✭

I would think so. Outside of Google (which I think would charge a lot) it’s one of the largest databases of user submitted locations.

Linking back to previous comments by @NianticThia last time we got a sync like this.

Likely more junk unless someone decided to do some sponsorship portals.

India also heavily uses Mapillary which may be more verification of wayspots. I know we used the maps for Waze routing a few years back.

Ingress team should longer disconnect Ingress and Wayfarer from synchronization.

The original post has now been updated to state.

While all Wayspots will be added to our Niantic map, it is still left to each game's inclusion rules to determine which Wayspots will make it into their games. Please be advised that these new Wayspots will not be present on the Ingress map.

Are these portals really needed to import ?

There seems to a push from Niantic (at least via Pokémon GO) to get more players from India.

    https://x.com/pokemongoappin?s=21 - They opened a Twitter/X account

They are also providing extra bonuses to players in India too.

Another article to back it up

But nothing for Ingress Agents of course.

    @NianticBrian / @NianticThia

Can I ask the reason for these not being added to Ingress? Do you not want new Agents from India?

  • PkmnTrainerJPkmnTrainerJ ✭✭✭✭✭

Once I get a response to my other message to Brian (though that was about Halloween so I guess it can be ticked off without a response?) I will.

  • PkmnTrainerJPkmnTrainerJ ✭✭✭✭✭

Message sent. Now to wait for a response.

Wayfarer features that Ingress already doesn’t have

    • No dupes map
    • No option to turn off name display on Wayspots
    • Choosing to ignore imports that would help players in areas that need it
    • Lack of category selection

I know they may not have the resources, as it’s a much smaller team than PGO but looks bad seeing it not having all the Wayfarer bells and whistles.

    Adding photos

There’s less incentive for Pokémon GO players to add photos to these Wayspots. Many use auto spinners like GO Plus+, so wouldn’t even look at the PokéStop.

Ingress players don’t have anything that auto-hacks so there’s a greater chance they’ll add a photo, along with getting +500 AP when done (which I know NianticThia’s comment about this last time caused some upset in the Ingress forums but I think it was badly phrased)

    An Indian Ingress players experience

So I find a great Wayspot, submit it and then get told it’s a duplicate (again, no duplicates show on Ingress nomination map) but I can’t see it in the Ingress map, even though it meets inclusion rules is a terrible experience.

    GO gets priority yet again

So far, Pikmin Bloom doesn’t sync new Flowers/Mushrooms. Monster Hunter Now hasn’t had a sync either as far as I know and I’m sure Peridot’s map is still way out of date. As Ingress isn’t syncing these, the thread may well have been

    “Have some new PokéStops India!”

Apologies for ranting a little, but Ingress players often feel sidelined when they’re not getting as many events/features etc. as PGO and this feels like an extra kick again.

(just sharing my comment from the Wayfarer forums)

Just because Ingress has a small team, these changes aren't outside the scope to do by the team in a couple of weeks to fully implement.

  • It’s disappointing and shameful that the game that kicked off POI submission is lagging behind in development and support so much that it doesn’t get new POI imports because of compatibility issues. Considering Lightship is supposed to be cross-platform, all platforms should be at the same standard at any given time, if only for continuity and player expectations.

Not reassured to see Ingress getting excluded more and more with fewer features being trialled in Ingress first.

It's Festival of Lights or Diwali. An Indian holiday that has been included in Go for a few years now

  • PkmnTrainerJPkmnTrainerJ ✭✭✭✭✭

Yeah, I enjoy the Diwali decorations and celebrations that happen locally.

It would be nice to add something for it to Ingress.

  • MoogModularMoogModular ✭✭✭✭✭

I would be more for unique things for Ingress not "these other Niantic things have x, Ingress should have x!"

  • PkmnTrainerJPkmnTrainerJ ✭✭✭✭✭

Oh yeah, I probably phrased that poorly. I don’t mean we should have the exact same things but it would be nice to have something for Diwali, and other celebrations too.

In the UK, it is Bonfire Night/Fireworks Night on Sunday. We have a Fireworks items in the game and yet there’s nothing happening for that?

  • Even with not syncing to ingress these mass imports, we should have a back door way to be able to add them to the Ingress game map. When they did the Courts of the World import for NBA some these appeared on the PoGo map with no pictures. As I have run across them I have added pictures. At this point I hoped that they would sync across to Ingress with the addition of the picture. This used to happen the other direction when old seed portals were given a picture they would then sync to PoGo. Now I have a few Basketball Courts that can't get added to Ingress because even though they meet the 20m+ criteria from other portals if I submit it, it will be returned as a duplicate.

If it's of good enough quality to be added to Ingress, yes.

But 99% of all quality is no good, as proven by the last import.

It's a truism in the world that additions are usually of lower quality than the first ones.

And since the Wayfarer review process has been revised, the last push to leave nothing but garbage has been executed.

    @NianticBrian @NianticThia

Now is the time to get out of sync with Wayfarer.

    We want the diamonds.

But we do not want any coal.

If they want the data from the AR scan, just push it once a month.

    Do not do a pull.

If you pull, the AR data from the ground scan will just be sent to Ingress.
