Machina Portal = Dead Portal

In my local area there are a lot of portals, a lot of which have been around for a long time, Churches, Monuments, Castles etc etc genuine points of interest.
And then there are a lot of portals which for want of a better description I shall call 'coal' You know the ones I mean.
Now that we have the Machina entity one thing has become apparent, most of these portals are not used they are there just making up the numbers.
Now for the controversial bit. If a portal is 'red' for X amount of time then I think it should be 'destroyed' by the Machina entity and no longer available to Enlightened or Resistance players until some task or other is completed. If its 'red' for say six months or more then it should be removed completely subject to resubmission as clearly its not being of any benefit or used in game.

So if you play somewhere seasonally, say only on summer vacation and are the only agent who happens to go there. And the portals go red at some point, all the portals should be deleted? What if you go into the hospital for an extended stay, do you risk losing all your portals? I'm not in favor of any mechanism for automated portal removal.
OK so lets say make it 12 months until its removed.
If no one visits it in 12 months then it really is just clutter. As for ' losing all your portals' are they really 'your' portals or just a part of a game. Coloured dots on a screen.
Let's just come up with a better way for you to deal with your Machina issues. If you are just concerned with bad portals, delete them.
So what about places open seasonly? Limited times a year? The only reason a POI should be removed if it actually has been removed in real life.
How would you resubmit them? They would still exist in lightship and used by other games so would be flagged as a duplicate.
There are already areas where there hasn't been any activity in a year or more. To remove the portals just because nobody plays there doesn't really help. New players that sign up would have no portals. I do agree inaccessible portals are an issue in the game but Niantic has already settled this. Public access isn't a requirement. So therefore machina will take those over in time. Just work around them or just stop fielding. Most have just stopped fielding. Eventually they will get the hint.
OK lets just modify this a bit and say that "If a portal is 'red' for X amount of time then I think it should be 'destroyed' by the Machina entity and no longer available to Enlightened or Resistance players until some task or other is completed". Let's say a mission of some kind. That way new players possibly get to learn something and rescue a portal. Possibility for a new badge there.
As for public access not being a requirement, from NIAs own rejection criteria - Note that it is not sufficient to be able to access the nomination from a nearby sidewalk. There must be a pedestrian walkway or a trail leading all the way to the object.
Id call that access
Same answer, not in favor of it. No matter how you spin it, no.
Ingress has so many problems at the moment and THIS is your suggestion? LOL.
This isn’t a very well thought out idea at all. Plenty of Portals exist that don’t see much use but can still be a valuable Portal during short windows or for a few people.
How about build beautiful mission banners using these seldom-used portals? That would encourage people to drive out there and use them.
How do you know the portals aren't being used by drones? Lots of people love bumping their Unique Drove Visits stat, and Furthest Drone Distance.
And, and others said, seldom-used portals are an investment in the future. Maybe new agents will joint there, or existing agents will move there, and find a wonderland of portals to clear, capture, and play.
Just because they don't fit your current playing style, doesn't mean they're useless.
"It's not easy for me to access that portal so it should be deleted"
- BlackOmegon, probably
It's not about access its about the red faction taking over. And it would seem the players are simply letting it happen. Its either a case of dont understand or cant be bothered.
Looking at the stats it would seem that roughly 7.4 million portals are now red. That's not a good sign.
Wow which niantic stats page is that?
Or is that from the API??
Machina owns 7,733,954 portals and has 6,414,817 links active at the time of writing this.
Anyone can view this data by accessing the Machina agent profile in the scanner, then switching to the "Now" tab.
It also means that Machina has claimed 41,4% of all existing portals.
It's a good reason to stop with the machina entity. It's so powerful, you cannot really avoiding it. Yes, if you constantly can control an area, yes. But when i look at the map, red is nearly everywhere.
I don't think that portals should get removed because a spoofing entity is taking them, or players not going to the portals. Most places are really amazing, and should be in the game. Shocking that RED has taken 2/5 of all the portals.
Seriously though, if they would just stop throwing random links, then no one would be bothered by it. (And the game could be played as it was intended.)
My favorite thing to do lately is to clear for machina so it can spread. Nobody plays in my area anyway so it doesn't affect anyone. I just let it grow. Eventually someone will pick up the game but for now the red team is winning. The state of the game is certainly in question. Not sure why it's still going.
Because it's not used in ingress doesn't mean it's not in others games.
POI removal shouldn't be tied to a specific game
Just as a follow up.
Since the last count on the 26th of August Machina has been capturing an average of an additional 50000 portals per 24 hours and currently owns over 8 Million portals.
ok?
That doesn't change your idea being a poorly thought out one especially with different games.
