I will 100% disagree with any scanning requirement to play the game. Ever.
It alienates those with devices incapable of scanning, it alienates those with certain disabilities (limited to cargress, perhaps), and it would force agents to help niantic build out its lightship database for other games.
I am in fact ok with how long it takes to nominate a portal. I'm just not ok with being 'required' to scan. I have scanned but did not enjoy it so do it only on a limited basis. Same with glyph hacking, tried it, nah, not for me most of the time. Being required to glyph every time or to do scans over and over daily would be a game breaker for me personally.
Overclock will hardly make any casual ingress player care about this feature.... and lag is still a daily issue. Its summer and 24c here in days and the few fields i try make its just too frustrating and makes u just play less.
VPS localization as extra auth has too many problems:
phone does not support VPS localization, can't authenticate?
low signal area, will game ever support pre-download of VPS data at home?
play at night? rain? snow?
indoors portal reachable from outside, but no physical access to scan (for example, closed at night)
want to scan portal, but there are people around, blocking the object
people are not exactly blocking object, but still bad idea to scan
previous scans were bad - scans of the ground - too easy to repeat in other areas
previous scans were bad/sabotaged - scans of car or something which is no longer there - cannot repeat to authenticate
object is too big etc. - no idea what was scanned and how
Main difference between extra auth and nominating (or scanning) wayspot - if something is wrong, can nominate later, no big deal. If auth does not work - can't play.
It would be more interesting to use VPS-friendly portals to drop storyline items, puzzle pieces and such, but do not expect strategic portals to be VPS-friendly.
Sometimes my scanner is also buggy - it does not put the hypercube on the ground. No, I will scanning portals if in return they give us an interesting plot with videos, clear goals for factions and new content.
I tried overclocking for the first time yesterday and got something similar: a non-cube-like blue blob together with lines extending right into the sky. I didn't record it, so naturally when I recorded my second attempt I did get the promised hypercube.

@PkmnTrainerJ thank you for posting this, I completely forgot AWE2023 happened
A thanks for posting instead of Disagrees?
A lot of players disagree about stuff, that they don't know the full extent of.
That video further clarifies the importance of good scans particularly at tactical portals, and frequent use of overclock at those Portals.
Because that data/analytics will show that to finally thwart those cheats, AR scans and Overclock could be more mandatory in the future.
I do realise that this post will get Disagrees. I see those disagrees as people who want people to cheat.
If people disagree but aren't inciting cheating, then please instead, leave a comment not a disagree.

The day scans become required to play will be my last. I'm simply not willing to spend my time that way.
You're not willing to spend 15 seconds to scan a portal, but ok to spend 2+ minutes to nominate a wayspot?

Also, what I'm doing wrong? This does not look like hypercube

report a bug on this forum.
Well, since scanning isn't required to play Ingress...
If you scroll up, that was the proposal.
