The Ingress Second Sunday #Ingress2S events were introduced to encourage exploration and adventure, and we are ready to expand the idea by adding more variations to the ways you may earn this medal. While doing 6 unique Missions will still suffice through June, Agents could be asked to meet a different set of challenges starting from July onwards.
FINALLY! It sounds like Agent Ops will be used for Second Sundays starting in July.
edit: Figure I'll add some feelings. The internet is all about feelings.
For real though Niantic. What exactly are you doing? I understand you had to make some changes for covid to make First Saturday work. I've never done one in person and I'm set to get my onyx medal for FS I think after the next one. But it's become to routine that I log in, maybe say hi, log my starting score. Recharge some dead portals around town, take a selfie with some random swag laying around, submit finished score and move on with my day. Get a medal tick for five minutes of effort. How exciting. I know there is some puzzle to solve. I remember doing one the first month or two of covid. Now, no interest. You lost me. FS events are stale. Please do something with these, anything. LOW EFFORT! CONTINUED LOW EFFORT!
Second sunday. At least I'm forced to leave the house I suppose. Go find some missions, complete. Done. I'm good with it. Neat that you may introduce some Ops stuff into it.
And like, nothing else? Oh right, some anomalies on the other half of the world? Might be cool if you announced the play area and maybe, just maybe I could figure out how to get some keys for some remote charging. But I'm sure you'll announce them a week in advance and make it near impossible to coordinate.
Nothing else though. Are you even trying at this point? Are you being pulled into other projects? Are you still working on scans maybe? You announced those THREE years ago. You've had three years of folks submitting data and we still have nothing inside Ingress. Neat. Maybe a drone medal to keep us busy? Naaaa, it got a small update a year or so ago and now forgotten. Soon to join the ranks of missions I assume.
Can't give us anything new, can barely keep us excited about the game and certainly can't communicate with us at this point. It's a wonder agents still play this game. I guess when you've somehow held their attention for ten years, they feel obligated to keep playing. FOMO is a....mitch. 6 months into 2023 and we got nearly destroyed with red portals because someone couldn't plan for any sort of a balance and a beta version of a quest system. Bravo!!! Y'all are knocking it out of the park. Kinda sad looking back at all these events and medals older agents were able to obtain and now, can't even get a re-re-release of some Japanese clipart you paid $50 for on upwork.
So if you're not travelling hundreds of miles to an anomoly there's no basically no events until potentially second half of this year. Second Sunday and first Saturday can hardly be considered an event. People still don't even have to attend first Saturday in person. Very dissapointed with this lack of effort but it's to be expected.
It's just strange and a disappointment that Niantic's not even going to test run the Agent Ops system anymore in Q2, when agents are almost begging for it. Was the first test run an such an unmitigated success, or should the system maybe be tested again with other configurations, like a week long HexQuest with challenging objectives, and/or other objectives like links and fields etc. What's the point of these automated features if they're not being used regularly?
Since we recently announced that we will be changing the structure of the Second Sunday after Q3, it is expected that some changes will be made.
But at the same time, one thing is for sure: a significant percentage of Ingress agents currently in the community do not want every weekend to be filled with Ingress events.
And unlike Pokémon GO, which in reality requires daily tasks to be completed, Ingress requires a certain amount of space.
When running Operations, Ingress needs a certain amount of space because you want to avoid months with official events as much as possible.
A large number of AG are needed to run a huge control field or a Nova with a large number of links concentrated in it.
We also want to avoid conflicts with official events.
I think your points are valid, in a roundabout way. But the amount of people doing large ops versus those just want to play the game and have some new events or medals to work on is hugely lopsided. I’m interpreting you would rather have no events so you can throw a large field? I’m actually kind of confused about what you’re trying to say.
However, in the case of Ingress, this means that there needs to be some space for players to imagine doing something new.
Because, unlike Niantic's other games, the majority of Ingress events are organized by the player community.
First Saturdays, Mission Days, and other unofficial events are all organized by players.
However, if Niantic filled all of those gaps, many of them would be disconnected.
In that respect, Ingress is very different from other games where the only events are those presented by Niantic.
Of course, Operation is one of them.
You say that the players who participate in the operation are biased, but that's one of the things that makes Ingress so appealing.
And it is also true that many operation that have been created by the imagination of the players have attracted many people and have given birth to new players.
And from next month until the end of the year, Anomaly will be held once a month at three different locations.
And apart from the Anomaly, there is a First Saturday every month and a Second Sunday as well.
It's not that we don't have events, but three out of at least four weekends each month are already filled.
And starting next month, NL-1331 will be held in the US and Oceania, including weekdays, and depending on the season, there will be special medal events like NEMESIS and Tessellation that will run for several weeks or the entire year.
With that in mind, there are already enough events to go around starting this year.
events 95% of the ingress community aren’t attending don’t count as an event for me. FS, not an event. SS, not an event. NL1331 that is 3000 miles from me, not an event. Mission day 3000 miles from me, also not an event.
Niantic had no problems doing events in years prior, not sure why anomalies are all we get now. And frankly, with how little effort is required for a FS or SS, an event could overlap with either of those “events” quite easily.
listen, I’m not asking for some crazy challenge that requires much thought. It’s clear Niantic can do low effort events. The solstice recharge challenge is a perfect example. $50 upwork artwork for the medal, set the parameters and boom, agent activity is up.
I don't understand why you, who say that 95% of the Ingress community doesn't participate and that FS and MD are not events, are getting platinum for First Saturday medals, but there are many different Ingress events. (Didn't you like First Saturday?).
The Anomaly, First Saturday, Mission Day, and NL-1331 that I mentioned are events that attract a lot of players, and the Global Challenge events you mentioned attract a lot of players as well.
They are all part of the Ingress Events.
There will be a mix of these events in the future.
And I understand that you would like to see more Global Challenge events.
Well, I am not a Niantic staff member, so I can't say with certainty, but the second Sunday after 2023Q3 will be the event that best meets your wishes.
I am not sure if the current 6 missions completed will remain as a requirement, but I believe that conditions like the Hexa Quest in this MZFPK will be offered.
It would also be nice to have a special medal for sale each month at this monthly event.
It is my hope that there will also be an annual leaderboard to motivate some players and encourage them to earn higher points.
It is not clear if there will be another Global Challenge event in the future, but we are sure there will be some.
However, as of now, Niantic seems to think that once every six months is good enough.
The fact is that the interval between Global Challenge events has not changed for a long time.
Well, personally, I hope that instead of ending when the value is cleared within that time frame, they will hold events like the VIA LUX Adventures, where the threshold for the top medal is not determined, where you have to play from the first day to the last day, and where the balance is easier for the beginners and harder for the experts. I think that would be great.
I'd like to see an event that is balanced so that it is easier for beginners and harder for experts, because in other events the threshold for the top medal is fixed and many players will reach that number and then stop playing.
Just remove the Agent Ops section. It adds more clutter and is just a distraction when I play the game. I also observed more lag when the Agent Ops info was added.
Comments
Well, I thought there might be more but it’s just the usual;
each month, plus the usual Pride XM.
Again, we don’t have much outside of those three. Compare to last years events;
We had Comic Sans, Vesak Day, Earth Day, EOS Imprint and Summer Solstice as extra events. This year, no April Fools or Earth Day?

Continued low effort. Bravo Niantic.

sad no events really entire q2 except if u go anomaly but thats only a small % of players and fs doesnt count really ☹️
why no mini events at all i dont get it? Brian promised more events but doesnt look that so far and they wonder why userbase isnt growing

Did Brian mention more events?
Feels like niantic intentionally wants to lose their player base
I can hardly remember the last interesting event
We do again, come back to this comment too.
You’re locked out of events if you work weekends when it comes to Ingress.
Year 10 event, or maybe Peace Day (which was August)?
I recall he said that at the last anomaly in japan ?
found it.
Thanks. Did you forget about this @NianticBrian ? 😆

They probably need some time to assess how it worked and what was going on with it etc.
I don’t think that would take the whole quarter though. I expected something in maybe May, or June at the latest.
He didn't say when.
Looking back at the last 5 months, in my opinion, it was heading towards Agent Ops being used more frequently.
But it's apparent now, Agent Ops needed more work.
Since we recently announced that we will be changing the structure of the Second Sunday after Q3, it is expected that some changes will be made.

One global challenge with badge worldwide every 6 months or so is a bit long gap between

Wait, i cant even place my own beacons and get the medal?
For these events? No.
There is no play in your own area with Battle Beacons style event this quarter.
No, I don't think you can. Only beacons deployed by NIA on anomaly sites. Bummer, yeah, considering we don't really have other events going forward.
It does render regular Battle Beacons that Agents can use kind of useless again.
What the...
Many Agents advocated for a return to live events and for the Battle Beacon anomalies from anywhere to cease so seems that’s what Niantic went with.
I would say, that is nonsense.
Agent Ops has been temporarily disabled now for over a week.
And when it was live, it did not add clutter, nor add extra lag.
That would be saying that doing Missions adds clutter and lots of lag. Which it doesn't.
