Large amount of data usage observed after pressing "Upload later" button

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a new submission
  2. Navigate to the last page and press the "Upload later" button
  3. Observe the network traffic in the background

Actual result:

After pressing the "Upload later" button, a large amount of data usage is observed in the background. It appears that both images from the submission are being loaded, even though they are not being uploaded. This can lead to significant additional expenses, especially for users in mobile roaming areas.

Expected result:

After pressing the "Upload later" button, no network traffic should occur as the submission is not being uploaded. The user should see a confirmation message that their submission has been saved for later upload.

Additional information:

It is worth noting that if the user turns on Flight mode immediately after pressing the "Upload later" button, no network traffic is observed after the mode turned off. The submission can still be successfully uploaded later through the contribution management menu. This issue should be addressed to prevent unnecessary data usage and potential costs for users.

This bug appears to be intermittent and does not occur consistently.

    From the video

What appears to be happening, is that the game is reloading all nearby portals, refreshing the game map.

  • If you have a network monitor with separate download and upload indication running you can actually see that it is doing a burst upload whenever you click the send later button.

But I actually never checked how much data it really uploads.

I have been struggling with this on areas with poor network coverage for quite a while now. Hoping it gets fixed. Happens on iPhone too, so not an Android-specific issue.
