non crosslink to calculate, i doubt it drain a lot of ressource, saying there's 4M red portals that's only 4M light actions every 5h (link random no crosslink to check).
But the whole purpose of Ingress is to capture Mind Units right? Machina don't do this and forcing agents to go take down these Machina portals/links is not going to make people play more. Some maybe will for a bit but it just isn't realistic for agents to drive around for hours to take down these long red links in order to walk around at a park or wherever they enjoy playing.
No, not like any player not playing alone, the reds far far more aggressive.
Listen, and understand. The Machina is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are blocked.
There are already players that drive around 8+ hours per day every day playing Ingress. Now they have more things to do. Some people don't care about mind units and fields, there are a lot of people that don't even know there's a scoreboard. The red portals are giving everyone more targets. Not every area cares about big fields. I can't remember the last big op I've even seen. It's a different game now. It's changed, not everyone will like the changes. And that's ok.
Don't forget. You can clear links, and if you aren't paying close attention, red can still derp across your lane when you are driving to the anchor or spine to throw. Been there, done that, closed the app and quit for the day.
THIS! The worst part about it is that it doesn't even show up in COMMS. With another agent you can see that so-and-so links from X to Y but with Machina it's silent so you have no clue unless you sit there refreshing Intel every 10 seconds while driving. Yet again something Niantic didn't think about because I am convinced no one there actually have ever played Ingress.
That's a good point, understand I like the Machina activity, and think it's ability to cross links is the one thing it can't give up if it is to have any real relevance in the game, but it should show in comm.
And thinking on the comm issue, if you are not suppressing Machina in your area, you're gonna get a reminder every five hours. That could be annoying I guess.
It is far more annoying to plan a field, take down what you need to take down, and then arrive at your anchor and not be able to throw a link cause a Machina portal derped 9 links out across where you needed to throw your link.
I know people will say "BuT pLaY wHeN tHeY ArEnT aCtIvE" and I understand there is a set time that Machina make actions, not everyone has the luxury to be able to schedule their Ingress availability around Machina. We play when we can.
I was one of these agents. On days I was able I would go to a park and walk it for an hour and microfield the entire thing, not possible now without killing 25 portals surrounding the park that linked down the middle of the park. Some days I would drive an hour to a park and make that an anchor to a decent sized field, again not possible unless I drive a few hours to **** RNG Machina portals blocking most areas around me. My Ingress time has drastically reduced because of Machina, it's just not worth my time or money to spend an entire day doing what used to take an hour or two. I get that some people will still do that but I am not one of them and I have seen a huge reduction in activity in my area. Down from 10+ agents out almost daily to 2 of us. If Niantic's goal was to **** this game off slowly they are doing a fantastic job of that.
I hear you, things have changed. I too have been impacted. And we are used to throwing long links over unoccupied territory. Now we have a new complication, we will adapt and I'm sure there will be tweaks to Machina. But overall I applaud the addition.
I wonder if it would make matters better or worse (or no change) if machina was disallowed to link to/from portals under Control fields (with emphasis on control).
Sans faire une énième répétition des arguments pour ou contre machina, le constat que je fait dans mon pays est le suivant pour des zones de campagne et de petites villes :
- Has no spatial limits (takes any type of portal, reachable or not that exists in the world, and we all know how many unreachable portals there are in the ingress/niantic map. Temporary, paid, limited access like private areas but legitimate for some reason );
- It has no time limits (play at any time from any type of portal);
- Does not follow real routes by jumping from opposite sides of rivers, inaccessible areas, mountain crests, etc. (resulting in an exponential increase in the kilometers travelled, with consequent consumption of energy/money and time);
- Does not follow the rules (cross links or under field)
It is a waste of time, money, energy and enthusiasm. And in some ways it's about playing against a perpetually spoofed bot.
If they really thought it could be a shock to a sleeping game, I understand the naivety and positivism, but every now and then they could also say that they have miscalculated with reality and take a step back.
It's not that they have to continue to be the most deaf.
In many areas (especially those where few users have ever played) the game is paralyzed, because those few users spend more time going to break 1/2 red portals with links than doing any other action in the game.
Open your eyes, the growth of Machina portals grows exponentially every day. What else do you need?
The Machina faction could use some tweaks, maybe shorten max link length and actions taken should show up in comm. But crossing links needs to stay, yes it can be annoying and interfere with fielding, but it is the only thing that makes Machina a threat. If Niantic takes that ability away, we will be left with a red based mini game. I can see it now, a competition for who can create the biggest link bordered red farm.
Using an unreachable portal, should be reason enough for the wayspot to be removed.
As for crossing links, this should not have been allowed. And the countless feedback bits I've read all basically agree that if Machina was to follow the same linking rules as players, it would be much better.
And means that if a large control field is planned, lane holders to block Machina would be a valid strategy
Cross linking and no decay to zero together is a a disaster for many areas. I’d be satisfied, for now, if they removed one of those.
I’d prefer they removed both and made the individual portals stronger to compensate. Why not 100% with 15% decay, and/or a random mod when the portal reaches level 2,4,6 and 8? Why not let it field?
My biggest fear is that this is just the beginning. I am wondering if Niantic has decided the game has run its course and will dial up Machina aggression and strength until it becomes unbeatable.
Many portals within private areas, but in which some people can enter is, unfortunately, legitimate for Niantic .. so for example companies have portals within their perimeter that cannot be conquered from the outside (collapsable yes but with difficulty).
In my specific cases I have asked for it to be removed several times, but it has always been refused.
Another example are amusement parks open only in the summer.. for months they will continue to proliferate and launch links everywhere.. and to bring them down you will still have to pay an admission price, perhaps for something you absolutely don't give a damn about. It's not sustainable.
@NianticBrian remove machina or just cancel ingress and close the servers because we won't play for long with this ****. Honestly you've ruined the game we loved.
Hello, I signed into this forum after years just to voice my disdain for the current implementation of the red faction, as well as to propose some suggestions for making it a constructive element to the game.
As a player on foot in a reasonably large city with high portal density but very few players (two or three, on occasion), I have to walk for kilometres just to clear links going straight throw my home zone. This is viciously demotivating and takes an enormous time (the only currency in Ingress if you don't just throw money at the game) otherwise spent on playing "normally". Having to do this every single day that I want to just play a bit has become unbearable and goes against the spirit of play.
In principle, I don't dislike the idea of the red faction, it adds an intriguing element to the game (and, especially in activity-deprived areas, it is a welcome addition), but in its current implementation, it is far more detrimental than constructive.
I would very strongly suggest revising at the very least the capability of cross-linking. There is absolutely no way of preventing utter destruction of an area by the red faction (cross-linking, preventing fielding). Allowing for prevention by mainting a link barrier of sorts would be in the spirit of the game, while still a challenge.
Further re-considering the very, very long link distances would be a welcome discussion, but this would already be vastly taken care of by revising the cross-linking capability.
I implore you to take these thoughts into consideration and revise some principles of this otherwise interesting dynamic.
Problem is that red portals dont decays so even if nobody takes them out they will stay there and if u leave neutrals they can grow from that too so its a huge issue in many areas and real pain if they start grow in areas u cant reach for many reasons and throw long links
Niantic should tune down the way they grow its way too agressive.

not really a hard calculation burden.
but no decay at all is weird yes.
1% decay / link / day would be sufficient
The problem is the bump level resets that..by your count it would take up to 23 days to get a Machina portal gone.
But the whole purpose of Ingress is to capture Mind Units right? Machina don't do this and forcing agents to go take down these Machina portals/links is not going to make people play more. No - it's just aggravating the remaining few players who now can't link and field without massive clearing ops.
like any players that's not playing alone then ?
but nia should add a chance to drop a rKC from reds. they would be cleaned faster 🤣

the removal of complete decay is the reason of wide spread in empty area.
niantic probably wanst that you field over area you really control now. not just empty easy fields
Apple IITC has yet to update to properly show Macina. Mine still looks like that orange mess too.
Edit: We’ll this inspired me to look into why IITC for Apple hasn’t been updated in over a year. Seems I need to run it as a beta under TestFlight.

Yes. They're pushing MOVE and without crosslinks and playing by our rules of engagement, that wouldn't happen.
I'd be willing to "MOVE" against opponents who play by the usual rules but not those who break them.
It's the same reason I expect Niantic to clean-up after spoofers (see also: portal resets, link restoration, etc.).

Agree with you there's a medium sized problem spot right outside Annapolis that can't be resolved until August and it's already a problem now. .
