If red could not cross links we would wall them off and treat them like a renewable resource of gear and AP. They would cease to be a real threat and become a hobby for us to raise and harvest.
I have to imagine the ability for machina to cross links is purely a server thing. If Quantum caps were causing grief, imagine 4 million machina portals checking every five hours if they can cross other links, etc.
the probalem is not the sigle cross....but the numero of the cross
here Ingress is die
A couple of cross per filed can help playability, because give time at one faction to play when destroy a enemy fields, but in this cases Machina killing the game
I have access to several of them in the nine boxes surrounding my house but I don't have the time or the boom to lower, microfield, and bump the AP level into 1-5 % of all Ingress players active or all time.
Imagine being a brand new agent, you hack a red portal, ZAP all of your XM is gone. You try to hack another portal, but every portal near you (or in your town) is all red. They all ZAP you. You run out of energy. You don't understand this game. You uninstall the game and go back to playing whatever you were playing before.
So what do you suggest new agents after tutorial are supposed to do if their city/area is dominated by those red portals ? If you are alone where you live and no nearby local agents that can help the task system will feel more like a chore and not very fun or challenging.
Agents have perceived even when dominated by the opposite faction. It's baffling for people to say these portals would be hard for new players, has anyone gone after these after recursing?
I just opened intel up looking at my main area of play that I have been away from for little less then a month and wow. The red in vegas is crazy. There are some areas I completely wiped of the red and its back in over double the area. I think what should be done is the machina portals should drop weapons with all the other items.
A new agent that pops up in a red area fresh will be faced with a very very hard task take out those red portals, it sounds easy but for new agents its the opposite if they are so many
So to play devils advocate... what is the point of having Machina there? To create more server lag? If a red portal isn't attacked in 30 days is anyone every going to attack it? Seems kinda silly to create more lag in a game that is already borderline unplayable because of lag.
Because people have for many years now been complaining of no players. This gives players something to do in the absence of activity. A new player or current player will actually have something take down. It seems most just don't want activity. It's been a ghost town in many cities. At least there's something happening now instead of nothing.

I wonder if the red ability to cross links is specifically intended to prevent us from throwing links around an infection and containing it.
Well. Considering the fact that the function to check for crossing links is used by Enlightened and Resistance factions.
This function either isn't implemented, or is deliberately disabled for Machina.
Or Maybe the check for blocking links will be enabled later in the year.
If it would, it would increase game lag by an absurd amount. You thought lag is bad now, wait until that function is enabled for Machina

so true
Farmville at last!

💯
I see screenshots of massive red infections and it kills me. I would love access to that kind of spread.

Keeping home area clean, just.
For idea of scale, top to bottoms about 40km.
When machina infects an area, it eventually captures all portals until no neutral portals are left.
How can a new player, who starts at level 1, even start playing in such a situation? It's even worse than being under a field.
it's far easier to level up with reds, most red portals would be l1 deayed to maximum. few l1 burster will destroy all those.
on then they can easily take the rest down when l4+. portals max decay no shield are really easily taken down
You really need to update your IITC.
I assume with the new agent onboarding tutorial and agent ops feature, this might help new agents while starting the game.
For now only time will tell.

Probably is unaware that it no longer updates through the Play Store
Took me a while to realize that
I guess will go look :)
The Ingress devs have said that they want to use the new task system to on-board new players.
Once they get to L3, they can use their L3 xmps to take out some red.
But like most of us that started.
Meeting up with fellow faction members or find what little neutral portals there are and capture those.
There is also glyphing which also gains AP.
I don't believe it is a big hindrance for new players

But you are basing it off a seasoned agent vs someone new to the game.
How about you go ahead and recurse and let us know how you are able to level up in a red only area. For science...

at least he will have something to do. full neutral area is worst, you field and then nothing to do for 7 days.
u are again wrong when cities like istanbul looks all red
Turkey has more important things to worry about right now.
It would be interesting to see what places like Istanbul looked like before machina. Because right now it looks like nobody plays there.
