XP for hacking/collecting items from portals.
Hello all.
Something doesnt make sense in my logic when it comes to delivering experience.
I dont know anything about attacking portals & I dont want to know that yet.
I have been doing a lot of walking & capturing many neutral portals, so the area is very green.
This is about hacking/collecting from portals.
1 - We have this neutral portal. If I hack it, I receive items, but no experience.
(Make sense from my point of view & fair or maybe it shouldnt give anything untill it has been captured.)
2 - Next portal I visit is a Green portal, I hack it and receive items & no experience.
(Didnt make sense here. It was captured by the green team & I am part of the green team)
3 - Next portal I visit is a Blue portal, my enemies portal, I hack it and receive items +100 exp.
(Didnt make sense here. My enemy portal gives items + 100 exp, why would I visit neutral & green portals?)
So all of these neutral portals that I have captured where I live, they give me nothing but items. IF blue were the owner of these portals, I would get items +100 experience for every visit.
What have i missed here?

Hacking portals gets you gear, which is why you would do it. Also, friendly portals give you slightly more gear than enemy portals.
Enemy portals zap you when you hack them, but the tradeoff for that is that you also get AP. You can get AP for every hack if you glyph hack.
I didnt ask how it works, I didnt ask anything about glyph hack either.
My question is ---> why is the enemy portals so nice to me, giving me items +100 XP for every visit, but I dont get that from my own team when I visit my own teams portal, I only get items.
Because when you visit your own team's portals, you can create links and fields, which give you +313 AP per link and +1250 AP per field (if I recall correctly).
Hacking an enemy portal also gives you slightly less gear, on average, than hacking a friendly portal.
@IPHacker And I answered your question... it's a tradeoff for getting zapped and losing XM.
It still doesnt make sense. If enemy captures 3 portals & create links and a field and get those experience.
I can visit those 3 portals which gives me 3 x 100 XP = 300 XP
I can do that 3 times within 4 hours which is 3 x 300 = 900 XP
After 4 hours I can do it again so that would be 900 xp + 900 xp = 1800 XP
I can make 5400 xp on 24 hours.
Enemy is locked now & cant capture the same portals again to gain more XP, but I am not locked, I can visit their portals and still get 900 xp every 4 hour + items.
Let say you are right, which you are, nothing wrong with that.
It still doesnt make sense.
I would rather lose XM & gain XP + items, instead of keeping my XM & getting items & gaining no XP.
The enemy is very kind to me. They deliver XM infront of them + items + 100 XP.
My own team gives me XM + Items, but no XP.
To be honest, 900 AP every 4 hours is approximately nothing in this game. I can get 100000+ AP by taking a walk around my neighborhood for an hour or two, capturing portals, and creating links and fields. Then if I want more AP, I find another place to walk around where I can capture portals, and create links and fields.
Focusing solely on hacking and ignoring the rest of the game is what doesn't make sense. You have to consider the whole game.
@IPHacker I think we basically have different mindsets. For me XP is not a goal... it's a side-effect of the changes that I make to the playfield. I get XP for smashing things, building them, modding them. Hacking rewards me with items that I can use to do those things and I don't need XP just for tapping that button. I understand that you're still leveling up and XP is really important to that, but 100 is really pocket change in the grand scheme of things.
One of the interesting things about hacking enemy portals is that sometimes you get no items from them. I guess XP is the consolation prize for that.
I understand what you are saying, but that is not my point.
Lets say we only have 3 portals in the entire world & the enemy captures those portals & creates links and a field.
I still have no reason to go to war, because my enemy delivers me XM, items + AP ( Not XP, my mistake ).
It just doesnt make sense to me.
Different mindset is the exact word to use. This isnt about I getting stronger or gaining more AP, it is about balancing the game. For me it is unbalanced (I might be wrong, I am new to this game).
Lets say that their are 3 portals in the entire world & the enemy lets you capture them, you create links and a field.
The enemy can abuse that system, by not capturing, but hacking your portals, they get XM + Items + AP from your portals.
You deliver XM + items + AP from your portals & they have no reason to attack your portals.
Is that balanced?
You get much more AP from destroying, capturing, and making a field with those three portals than you would just hacking the portals assuming they return the favour. Which they probably will.
You also need all these stats (capture, destroy, link, field, hack) to increase your medals to be able to level up past level 8.
So, now we get into the question of, "What is your goal in Ingress?"
Different people will have different answers to this question. But for what it's worth, if you look at the "Scores" section in the app, that's based on the fields created by each of the two factions. XM, items, and AP, by themselves, don't matter. In your hypothetical world with only three portals that the other faction has captured and turned into a field, if all you do is hack those portals, the other faction "wins."
Exactly & if I dont destroy those 3 portals you captured. How are you going to continue to get medals?
The portals will decay in a week, just don't charge them. Or only charge 1 or 2 of them until you have the recharger medal.
With portal decay and red faction now in the game, Ingress can be done single player if needed.
You said something interesting here. To pass level 8, you need the capture, destroy, link, field, hack & so on...medals.
Nothing personally ok?
Lets go back to the 3 portals only in this world.
You capture these neutral portals & you leave´em for a week & they become neutral portals & you capture these neutral portals again & you get the medal.
The enemy can still abuse the game by not capturing, you wont beable to get the destroy medal, because the destroy medal says "Purifier - Destroy enemy Resonators".
If you're after AP, the game has Glyphing. As well as linking and fielding.
The reason for why simple Hacks do not grant AP, is because this reduces the incentive for bad actors and bots to level up from spoofing around. Which is already a problem.
Also AP is not the main driver for Ingress, as Hosette and others have mentioned, the game centers around controlling territory AP gain is simply a side thing that provides a little reward towards levelling up. Once you've reached L8 you are essentially at the max power of the game. And any additional AP just helps towards other optional goals such as reaching L16 in order to level up, again, from level 1
My goal in Ingress Prime is to capture and dominate as much as possible & I began that way, but I understand why my enemy doesnt attack back.
They have no reason to attack my portals, they just hack my portals and captures the neutral ones right next to me, & many of my resonators has no energy left, they dont get attacked & it is expensive to recharge them & you gain very little AP by recharging them. Much easier to let the network die and start to recap again & on my way to those neutral portals, I can get extra AP by hacking my enemies on my way to the neutral ones.
This is more or less like teamwork play instead of going against each other. Why we have Green and Blue teams, I dont understand. I will abuse the situation by not attacking my enemy & go after neutral portals. The only time I will attack my enemy is if I must attack.
What I would probably do in this three portal world where the other faction will not attack is:
Recharge, glyph hack and drone hack.
Given infinite time I would get onyx in recharger, hacker, maverick and translator and reach level 16
(Edit) AP for 16 coming from glyphing 😂
a friendly portal will give you 20% more items. The droprate of pc is 8%.
so lets say you hack 200 friendly lvl8 portals, glyphing them all. You will have 1400 items, and 112 of them will be pc8.
if you hack 200 enemy lvl8 portals, you will gain 1120 items, abd yes you will gain 20000 more ap, (but thats really a low amount of ap) since glyphing the portals wether they are friendly or not will give you 86000 ap.
You will have 90 pc8, but could have lost up to 2000000 xm, if the portals are modded with forceamp and turret. 90 pc8 means 720000 xm, and the possibility of having lost 1280000 xm instead of gaining 896000 xm. Thats a difference in 2176000 xm. Thats is quite a lot of xm for wanting 20000 ap..
I would say using these 2,1 million of xm, would give you way lot more ap if used other ways, like linking and fielding, capture and deploy..
where I live, the other faction doesnt field or **** much. So the purifiermedal is quite hard to get. But building, fielding and linking gives ap and lots of other medals. So many other medals that reaching lvl16 was not a problem. Trying to abuse the game by not playing, its maybe not so effective.
Its also gives you more ap to build than to destroy. The easiest way to see wich faction has the upperhand, is by watching the stats. If you have build more than you have destroyed, your faction has the upperhand. If its the opposite, than you have to build more.
I love you man or woman...what ever.... This is exactly what I want the Ingress team to read, so they can see the abusive & the unbalanced of this game, you explained it so perfectly. It couldnt be more perfect.
The other team is not attacking & you are taking other options into action to reach level 16.
I love it.
I have no further to say in this thread.
Thank you all for a nice and clean dialog.
Good day all.
This is the game. Play it or leave it. Learn to adapt and survive.
I've grown up in towns dominated by one team, you do what you need to.

I presume the 100 AP on hack is to prevent a new player from being blocked from AP if the only ports in the area are high level shielded ones; granted we have been given glyph hacking for AP but it wasn't always the case.
@IPHacker I think that the world where your opponent just hacks your portals to get AP and never destroys them doesn't exist in the real world, and especially not for low-level portals. There are certainly places where P8 farms remain standing because one faction has enough players to build P8s and the other doesn't, but in that case it's the dominated team leaving them up so that they can farm high-level gear from them.
As you play more and level up you'll develop your own personal style based on the area you live in and the types of things you enjoy. One of my local players obsesses over maximizing his personal stats, and in fact he has more AP (and most other stats) than just about anyone in the world. Some people love building, doing missions, or throwing big fields. Other people like me like nothing more than smashing zillions of high-level portals, and it's pretty easy for me to rack up 200K AP or more by plowing through a sea of portals. (I recently rolled over 300M AP and was planning to try to hit it exactly but I got so caught up in what I was doing that I didn't notice until I was 100K past my target.)
Simple:
In the early game when new players were too low level to hurt P7/8s, and there were no uncaptured portals, hacking enemy portals was basically the only way to level up. You couldn't destroy anything, and everything was deployed, when there were only 20 portals in your entire multi million population city.
It's a holdover from a bygone era. Don't think too hard into it.
Have seen a common thread among your new posts so far @IPHacker
You can't passively walk around while playing pogo and also level up ingress. You can do the opposite though, make Ingress your primary game! :P
I didnt say that I still play Pokemon Go.
you didn't! (if you did i would ask for a citation) :)
I agree with this, or i think i do! you can't passively play ingress whilst playing pogo. (the reverse is possible, albeit you have to keep an eye on items/storage)
