Suggestion to raised activity
If asking an agent thats been playing the game for long, has has a lowered activity and doesnt even takes a daily hack anymore:
- - how much space do you have left in your inventory?
The answear I think would be less than 100.
My suggestion is to set a ”must be used before” date.
That all items would turn to xm, after certain amount of time. Resos could have a week, burster, keys, common modds and rare modds to. US, vr modds, quantums, hypercubes and refractors could have maybe a month. Premium items would stay as long as you dont recykle them.
Keys inside of keylockers would not turn to xm.
That would make people to use their gear, and in need of hunting for new gear. It would probably make the use of a backpack less attractive, and it would make those who have had their inventory clammed with only vrmodds and refractors in a hurry to use them.
Gear is meant to be used, not stores for maybe good to have in the future. The inventory boost of 500 were accurate imo since there are more portals today than 10 years ago.
But many agents have to much in their inventory, never beeing used. Like some people I know, who has 160 quantums laying for what purpose? Recykle 140 and your inventory opens up a little. Why do you save 100 keys to that island, that you could never use, and IF it was to happend somone there would for sure be 1000’s of keys among the agents that recently been hacked.
Its not about having a larger inventory, but to use the things inside.

I agree something should be done about backpacks. Accounts that don't take any action in comm shouldn't be able to drop gear or gain anything in quantums. It's created a huge imbalance in the game. Players with dozens of accounts accruing gear daily. When one player can keep thousands of portals charged without ever farming something is a bit off.
So, I agree that gear is meant to be used.
My problem is that there's no reason to use it: There's no meaningful opposition near me, and building the same portals and fields for the 1000th time in 8 years doesn't quite have the same charm as the 1st time.
Putting an expiration date on my inventory doesn't address that and makes it so that I can't just jump back into the game if ever I should feel like it.
The lack of players is a real problem in many areas. The new Niantic games coming out soon will take the remaining players. It's almost like year 10 is the final curtain call for the game. If anyone picks up Ingress and plays it their experience is nothing like the pre-prime era. All the requests to change the way the game plays is moot.
My suggestion is to set a ”must be used before” date.
This would be an awful change. For one, VRLA are a precious commodity. For a second, we have no control over choosing the "oldest" item when it comes to things like ADA and Jarvis, and thus would have no way to ensure we use the items that are necessary.

It would make backpackers cycle their gear more often, but that's about the only thing.

External pressures to 'use it or lose it' however, are more likely to generate anger than interest from players. Especially when players returning from a break find that their entire inventory has been wiped clean. "Oh, I was going to do some Ingress, but I have no resonators, bursters or cubes, so meh can't be bothered".

A better option is to provide paid options for larger space, such as paying for multiple CORE 'tiers' for extra slots. Backpackers wouldn't do it, but real players would appreciate the extra space. Additionally providing more Key Capsules, up to say 10, would provide more key storage while freeing up inventory space.

Because the cost of replacing keys to somewhere like Vanuatu can rise to the tens of thousands and sometimes keys for large operations can take 6 months to move through all the relevant players to make it to their destination. And if the "use by" date was set when you acquired items, even I'd create a backpack to move items back and forth to reset them (because Niantic would end up encouraging that).
The problem is not 'inventory no-one uses'. Every piece of gear in your inventory is useful and has a purpose that will be necessary. The problem, as mentioned by others, is activity. When there's more people just recharging, or no other players, your inventory will bloat in some areas and not others. I have no need to use flipcards, so I have more than 100 of both. But given their low drop rate, I prefer to give them to others than simply recycle them. I have over 100 VRMH and VRHS and use them liberally now, but they're also replaced quickly through KCs so they're always a high level. When I give them to others, they're precious for those not using KCs in the same way.
Arbitrarily saying "Your decision to hold onto that VR gear is bad and you are bad" is a great way to make players quit when their souvenir keys disappear, or their stack of items handed to them by another agent that they're excited to use, disappear within a week.
If someone has "inventory issues" then let them sort that out. Tell them to Marie Kondo their inventory, don't hit them with a bat and recycle their stuff against their protests.
Its not you choosing of using the oldest one, the game could choose to use the oldest.
I **** think the person using backpacks, would be able to use the backpacks gear in time, but that calculation might be wrong.
By storing the keys inside you keylocker they would not turn to xm, so store them for 6 months in a keylocker? Maybe 4 days would vanish if the keys are to be transfered by several agents. But once getting them, put them insida the keylocker and use them when time is right?
when some people just recharges, this will make their keys turn to xm after some time. So this would mean either they have to revisit the portal or let it decay when the key ha turnes to xm.
Its not bad holding on to vr gear, but vr gear its not unattainable. Make use lf it, and you will soon galn more again.

Why am I being forced to? It's my gear, why can't I use it how I want. Your idea here is basically a punishment for people not wasting gear. It's counter productive to making the game more accessible for casual players.
"Those items that you only rarely get? If you don't use them, I'm going to destroy them. Sucks to be you!"
People have enough reasons to not play completely, without being punished for not playing fast enough.
So an agent who was hospitalized, on deployment, on a cruise, or otherwise unable to play for a while would lose most of their inventory?
I hardly think pissing players off is going to motivate them to play more.
that would only lead to negative and more stress, if u dont use gear no big deal really if people wanna hoard and dont use much its their loss i guess.
Yes, let's punish semi retired agents who don't play often and completely deplete their inventory so they have even less incentive to open up the scanner.
Genius.
Thousands of Russian and Belarusian agents disapprove of this 🙄
If that is targeted to push backpackers out - thats wrong way. Items should not duplicate in backpacks without activity. And even more, adding timer "use till" on each item can drastically increase game lag we all can face.
